Good move by JR. Flipping a waiver claim for a pick when you no longer need the player. Mike is on a dirt cheap contract (550k) so it makes moving him rather easy. He's a warm body on the bench that can come in and play some games. He's a better goaltender then he's given credit for IMO.

Much more likely placed on waivers though it depends a lot of how/if he gets playing time and also how he does.

He could post a .945 Sv% over 6 games and yeah, they might get to trade him for a pick.

More likely he posts a .901 Sv% over 3 games and gets to hit the waiver wire again.

I doubt it. He'll be a senator for the year with the personal troubles of Craig Anderson, it only makes sense to carry 3 NHL goalies, in case the extreme happens

Our goalie is not the problem, unless you can find one that will score 20-30 goals. We only have 4 top 6 forwards and can't score. It's like 2012 all over again offense wise.

Yep. I mean it's a free pick and all, so I'm not going to complain. But the odds of that pick turning into an NHL player who plays 200+ games is something like 5-10%. This is why GMs are willing to "hand them out like candy". Even 2nds that people on this board throw around only have something like a 20-30% chance (depending where in the draft) of playing 200+ games.

Pittsburgh got an asset for a player they lucked into and no longer need, and Ottawa gets insurance at a position that has become incredibly unstable over the last 10 days due to reasons completely out of their control, for the low low price of a 5th round pick.

Win-win, as far as I'm concerned.

You have to weigh the value of Ottawa sorting out their goalie situation and being able to assign Dreidger and/or O'Connor to the AHL, and maybe winning a game with Condon in that they might not have won with Driedger or O'Connor in if it comes to that versus the likelihood of a 5th rounder becoming Mike Hoffman.
