What a second! I thought you guys loved him!

A lot of us do, I love him like crazy, although not at that $ and term. Holden is one of the few Jets forum guys who has never liked Tanev, I remember crossing swords with him back when Tanev first started with the team.

Tanev always gives 100% all the time. I think Holden sells him short with his overly negative description; he's not the most skilled, but he's still decent. He earned his spot on the Jets third line and was always good. I'm sad to see him go. I still think the contract is bad because that's way too much term and money for what Tanev brings, but Tanev isn't garbage my any stretch.

Yep, likely have to trade Rust to free up space for an inferior/less proven Rust who is signed for 3 years too many.

If they really wanted to run some combination of Galchenuk, Kahun and Hornqvist down the right, I guess it makes sense to swap RHS Rust for LHS Tanev? I sure hope the return on Rusty is someone eating Jack Johnson's salary.

Have fun with fast skating with nothing else Tanev Pittsburgh. I'd be shocked if he EVERS cracks 10 goals or 25 points again. Zero hands, zero offensive awareness, zero puck skills, very little hockey IQ, poor passing. Struggles to move the puck out of the zone, struggles to carry the puck out of the zone, struggles to postion himself defensive, zero offensive skill or awareness. He scored what he did this with goals off his ass or poor passes that deflected onto net to score in lucky situations. A PK specialist that does little else.
Did you even watch him play? Horrible assessment on the player

What a second! I thought you guys loved him!

The casual fans love him. Since he runs around like an idiot on the forecheck. Those that understand systems and how forechecks work are much more reserved about him. He struggles with forechecking angles. He occasionally makes great plays turning over the puck on the forecheck which casual fans remember, but those that watch closesly realize that his poor angles work against a forechecking system which often allows easy exits for the opposing team. He skates around really fast. Cool. But the puck dies on his stick. Struggles to move the puck and less than 0 offensive IQ. He works his ass off defensively and has shown great improvement in that area (was a below replacement level defensive player when first brought up, now an above average defensive forward). His positioning is still suspect, but his skating and hard work makes up for it. But a completely one dimensional forward that kills any offense a line might create.

He is a decent 11-13 forward as a defensive/PK specialist. Beyond horrible at anything above 900K.

Pittsburgh's 2019-2020 cap situation suggests they still may need to make another move.

(Note - the free agent figures I am using, if they are not already reported in press, are from Evolving Hockey's contract predictions. Other cap figures from Cap Friendly)

Pittsburgh (2019-2020)
Right now..................$76.3 m
+ Tanev.........................+ 3.5 m
+ Aston-Reese…......+ 1.3 m (RFA)
+ Blueger….................+ 0.9m (RFA)
+ Pettersson…..........+ 1.6 m (RFA)
Off-season TOTAL.....$ 83.5 m

Rumor is Pettersson is getting more than that on a longer term deal too.

I'm guessing (hoping?) GMJR has a Rust +JJ for a bag of pucks type deal lined up. Thar clears something like 6.25m.

People are too quick to judge. This will look a lot better if the Pens win the next six Stanley Cups.

Agree. Also, think of how good of a deal this will be in year 6 when the cap ceiling is at 100+ million. People always forget about year 6

When I saw this signing, I assumed it was a 1-2 year deal at around $1.5-2m. One of the biggest “what the ****” deals I’ve ever seen

Look on the bright side Pens fans.

Four or five years from now, when the bottom falls out and its time to rebuild, Tanev will make a great Moreau-esque tank-commander captain.

Woah, that's pretty shocking. He's a valuable 4th line player but I don't know about giving him 6 years.
