Was there this much animosity between Winnipeg and Quebec City two years ago? Yowzers!

nah, everyone was all like, cool - gary's admitting he made a mistake, we're next.

but if it's an american market getting the team, suddenly the NHL hates canada again.

Nice opening statement... what, you couldn't have quoted Boston or Foreigner instead?

I'm thinking a severe bluff on the part of the NHL, or maybe a team in the Eastern Conference (NJD? Florida?) is moving to QC unbeknownst to us (like Atlanta coming to Winnipeg after years of the Phoenix expectation) and the NHL is desperate for a landing site for the Coyotes because their safe landing place is already taken.

It really makes you wonder. The whole Seattle thing makes so little sense – on almost every level – that you really have to wonder whether there is any truth to the rumor about PKP working on two different files.

Winnipeg was a deserving market that was screwed like Qc in the 90s. That's the difference. They were ready at the time while Qc wasn't thanks to Denis de Belleval if I remember well.

One reason Winnipeg wasn't worried about Quebec and it applies to the current situation was that Quebec didn't have a new building confirmed. We knew having a new building over one planned was a huge insurmountable advantage,

Honestly I cant remember because I wasnt paying attention as I couldnt take it seriously enough to give it much more than a cursory glance. Six months seems to trigger a bell, possibly 10mnths to a year. Now that was going full-on with extensive reno's and certainly theoretically & practically speaking Key Arena could in fact be made game ready for October. We have the technology. No problemo. So. Provided the owners dont mind losing tens of millions for the next few years, or perhaps Gary softens the blow with promises of Maximum Revenue Sharing & money from his Development Fund to offset their losses, it is possible that they try & pull it off. I think its "silly", that they should do it properly, lead-time, get it setup properly, but this is the NHL, and they just might try it on. This is whats so annoying about these guys. Could be an empty bluff to gain leverage, then again, maybe not.
That the interesting part of this whole wacky scenario It going to be the 17th of freaking June in one hour that leave let be generous and say three and a half months to do what? Upgrade key to be a halfway workable arena, marketing and season tickets drive, sponsorship, team logo, jersey and name change. On top of that Glendale could drag this mess all the way to the 25th! Money is the least of your issues but the logistic is going to be a nightmare. You know what am starting to hope it really in the NHL cards. The entertainment alone would be amazing. And that got to some sort of Guiness world record to relocate the same franchise three times in a row at the wrong place and time!

June 25th...if you think thats bad, the NHL said July 2nd.

I don't remember that being the case. The Atlanta and Winnipeg fans weren't very nice to each other, but that was preceded by years of acrimony between the Winnipeg base and the Phoenix fans.

but the QC crowd was quite supportive of winnipeg once everything went down, iirc.

of course, back then QC wasnt ready as it is now. If they get passed over again, it will feel like hamilton back in the expansion years: "we thought we did everything you wanted but you're still leaving us for that girl?"

Yeah. The Atlanta/Winnipeg thing was practically a lovefest compared to the Phoenix/Winnipeg thing back in the day.

I dont know Man. Maybe Gary wants to re-design the game, put hockey into basketball specific venues, be it the AWA in 96 or the Islanders off to Brooklyn & Barclays, and now this with Key Arena. Next up, 4 Quarters instead of 3 Periods. Extra point if you score from behind the Blue Line...

Either way, relocating will be good. If QC gets a team, which they should, we'll get to see some NHL games at the Colisee before the new arena, and the Nords-Habs rivalry is renewed

If the Coyotes go to Seattle, we get to watch a stripped down NHL team play in an AHL arena with more obstructed view seats than the old Boston Garden. Can you say amateur hour, Gary? :D

Win-Win for us fans who don't have a horse in this race.

yes, it was a big lovefest for Winnipeg. Except for the hardcore Hamiltonites, anyway. The acrimony with the Atlanta fans was bad, though, worse than what we've seen so far today.

So if the NHL goes there before the NBA, are they still going to be considered a tenant paying rent, which does not work for most NHL teams?

You know, you may truly be on to something.

There is something to be said for smaller venues. Both the Yankees and Mets downsized their capacity when they built their new stadia. At the time, there was no shortage of demand for tickets for either team in the larger venues, although that's changed with the Mets and their financial difficulties.

Since last wednesday, no matter on which side of the fence we are or where we are shooting from, those last five days have been pretty entertaining.

But the next 2 to 3 weeks will be entertainment for the ages.

Starting tomorrow. Enjoy. :)
