The Coyotes are now 2-13-2 for 6 points after 17 games and they are already out of the playoff picture. How is that youth strategy going? Chayka has brought that team to the league's basement instead of the promising land. I expect the interest in the team to be at an all-time low in the next few weeks.

Their odds stand at 0.2% now. So there is still a chance!

"I think we have a legitimate shot to make the playoffs this year," he said. "I think we're going to be a competitive team."

- Andrew Barroway, Andrew Barroway reaffirms commitment to keeping Coyotes in Arizona, Arizona Republic, July 13, 2017

They’ve been competitive if you try looking at something other than the win loss record. The number of catastrophic mistakes made each game is declining. If they eliminate those altogether then they’ll start winning more games. ;)

The Tuscon Roadrunners currently have the highest winning percentage in the AHL.

Perhaps they could consider switching places with the parent club for while. Maybe they'll make up some ground :D

On Bill Gates investing $80 million in the West Valley...

Bill Gates makes $80 million land deal in far West Valley | AZ Big Media

The report says a division of Gates’s Cascade Investment bought a controlling interest in a nearly 20,000-acre tract of land known as Belmont. The property is located off Interstate-10 at 339th Avenue. The land could end up being along the planned Interstate 11 highway, the proposed freeway that would link Phoenix to Las Vegas.

***
That's even further west than Glendale according to Google Maps. Bill Gates is moving in the wrong direction if Bettman and Barroway are to be believed. Eastward Ho is the only thing that will save this team.

If the Suns don't get one...I do not see how Barroway will...

Phoenix councilwoman would not support new, remodeled Suns arena

To quote:

"“While I intend to be a partner with the Suns on the many great things they do for the city, it is not in Phoenix’s best interest to invest in an arena.”

The future of Talking Stick Resort Arena has been a question for nearly two years.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said in February 2016 that a new downtown arena was high on his priority list while the city has also explored luring the Arizona Coyotes from their Glendale home."

This would be strictly a commercial development opportunity. Cascade Investment LLP and Lightning owner Jeff Vinik have teamed up to perform a massive makeover and redevelopment of Tampa's Channelside District known as Water Street. Granted that's forward-facing to Amalie Arena but in Bill Gates folder, Water Street (along with Belmont) is a straight up commercial development opportunity.

Well cbc..... here we have an example of the resident smartass of our local media with a cheap chirp and of course it gets the usual context twisting.

Yes.... the land is way out near Tonopah. Which is where the largest active nuclear power plant in the US resides.

Talking Stick Resort Arena renovation in the air

Source (Video - 12News): Talking Stick Resort Arena renovation in the air

Well thats interesting..... I wonder if Stanton might decide to just ram it through somehow before leaving office, getting the two Mayoralty Candidates off the hook who can look good in deriding public subsidies for big league sports but who wont have to actually deal with the fallout as it was "approved by the previous regime" type dealeo. Additionally if its left open & unsettled, and they actually stick to their campaign promises, Sarver & the Suns leaving as a result they can pretty much kiss their political careers goodbye when that happens in 5yrs and youve gotta figure they know it. So if this gets squashed & certainly no public funding for a new dual NHL/NBA building let alone reno's alone at TSRA for the Suns/NBA... theoretically Metro Phoenix & Arizona could lose both the Suns & the Coyotes, the D-Backs (who are still having ongoing problems) & some of the Cactus League Clubs.

It was Sherwood who got Chavira to swap his vote to give IceArizona their arena management fee in return for Sherwood to vote for the TO casino...

Phoenix Suns' arena overhaul faces opposition from key city leaders

To quote:

"You haven't heard much about this deal because it's being hammered out behind closed doors.

But a source familiar with the project says a proposed overhaul of the 25-year-old city-owned arena could cost close to a half-billion dollars, with taxpayers picking up more than half the bill.

A renovated arena would not accommodate the NHL's Arizona Coyotes.

12 News filed a public records request for the report several months ago. The city has denied the request, claiming the report was being used in confidential real estate negotiations."

No big surprise that the renovated arena won't accommodate the Coyotes. Weather they move forward or now, both will have implications on the team IMO.

If approved, a 450 million or so makeover is essentially a new arena. That will make a new building in the East Valley just for the Coyotes even a harder sell. Even with the tribe.

If Phoenix won't use public funds for the Suns, they definitely won't use them for the Coyotes. So a no could send Sarver shopping around in the East Valley. If won't share with the Yotes downtown, it won't in a new location either.

So...it appears that there will be one more, last hurrah with the State Legislature then...

What do you think will happen in front of the State Legislature? Why wait until now?

Well...the 2018 State Legislative has not yet officially started (but will on 01/08/2018)...we are only in the backroom dealings and pre-filing stages now... :D

However...the same outcome as last time is likely to occur...
that is, if a bill (should it get a sponsor) is formulated and presented...
then, lots of presentations...short on cash...bill not passed...

Oh yeah, serious implications either way.... and that number, $450M ~ $500M is pretty darn shocking is it not? I mean My God. TSRA isnt even 30yrs old for one thing, and for another, I mean, what could they possibly be doing that would require that amount of money? Thats the price & then some of a brand new building. How is it that OVG in Seattle can essentially totally gut Key Arena, drop the floor by 15', sink new foundations & a floor, new everything with only the roofline being retained & they can do all that for around $600M.... and in an earthquake zone... What kind of reno's to TSRA could possibly cost a half a billion dollars? Mindblowing!. No way. Not unless their dropping the floor, complete gut job making it NHL friendly & if they were we'd know about it. No way you could keep that secret.

Well, for starters, $100 million for the parking lots. I mean, that is the established going rate for an arena's parking in AZ, correct?

More seriously, it sounds like the politicos there are getting sticker shock at even a reno - maybe Sarver and the architects overplayed their hand, like IA did last year.

TSRA is 25 years old. Second or third oldest in the NBA.

The renos being discussed now wouldn’t take place for a couple more years. If they don’t they still face the prospect of the Suns filing for arbitration in 2022 to force a renovation or replacement arena or exiting the lease completely. So the city has to do something eventually and getting started on it now gives them plenty of time to work on a solution before they get a gun put to their head over it.

There’s nothing really mystic about this.

.... nothing "mystic" about it? C'mon TL.... that price tag is "fantastical".... "epic"..... are you kidding me?... what are we talking about here?.... doorknobs & lavatory handles forged from solid gold & platinum?.... How is it possible a building not yet 30yrs old would require that kind of expenditure on renovations & upgrades? Absolutely mind-blowing. Surely these numbers are deliberately hyper-inflated, posturing & positioning in order to get himself a new building altogether because those numbers, your talking a new arena. I just dont understand it otherwise. Does not compute. I mean, what am I am missing here? TSRA isnt MSG, not Key Arena so what gives?

The price is high because of the amount of demolition required and then building it back up in short order. Meaning huge labor costs.

This isn’t like hiring the Property Brothers to come in and move a couple of walls.

And yes there are some massive upgrades to go along with it.
