If he does walk... he leaves after a pretty damn impressive and valuable stint with us.

Was a hugely positive addition to the team, played well above his cap cost, and competed hard every night. Tip my cap to him and hope he enjoys success wherever he lands.

Agreed with most of the above.

Still not a reason to ice, on purpose, the worse possible team. That would be a terrible message to our youth after this playoff run.

Get a proper, veteran defensive center. Overpay if you must, his contract won't hurt if it's for a year or two.

Same with D. Get legitimate guys if it can be done without excessive money/term. Heck, maybe even add a core piece if opportunity presents itself.

Sorround our young guys with an atmosphere of respectability, even if it means picking at #12 instead of #3.

-Getting a proper veteran defensive center isn't easy. Hence the cost for Danault. I can't say I really watched Brassard last season, but he has the reputation as a two-way center and his usage was definitely more defensively orient (hold leads, tied late, D-zone push), even if he didn't face top competition. There really aren't free agent options out there that can do what Danault does.

-I'm fine with improving if the right opportunity presents itself, I just don't think it will and Montreal shouldn't force the issue.

-I don't think surrounding the Habs with an atmosphere of respectability is an issue. They've got a good locker room and vets who can lead and still play. I'm not advocating a sell-off, just being realistic with the shitty hand the team has been dealt this offseason.

...a lot of pizza eating and being glued to Pornstache...could be a Domino's commercial...
Man, he turned down 5 million a year in a flat cap environment, that is hard to believe. I want to know who it is that is advising him that he is worth more than that? He is a good defensive player but he has zero offensive IQ, he might be in for a reality check.

...oh, some moronic GM will offer him over $5 mill and regret it immediately...I really think all the talking heads praising him relentlessly the last few years have blown his head up too much...yes, he's a phenomenal defensive specialist, but that's it; all his talk last year about being more than just a defense guy and showing his worth offensively was just that, him marketing himself with over the top bullshyte...if HE thinks he's worth his Pot of Gold, let him go find it...and if someone does give it to him, all the better it's not us...

Isn't there a rumour out there that he's getting $5.8m/6 years from a team. Montreal offered $30m. He's looking at $34.8m. Almost $5m more. Could see Minnesota, Columbus or NYR offering that.

GM's are looking at how he is instrumental in shutting down talented players and I guess, on a deep team, they would be able to overlook his lack of offensive production but ultimately, he ends up centering a 3rd line. MB is at fault for this, they elevated Phil on a bad team and his head probably swelled a little, I do wish him all the best, seems like a well-liked player amongst his teammates.

In a flat cap world, that is a very generous contract and if it is south of the border, the tax issue is probably another incentive for him to sign there.

Which centermen were better than him 2 and 3 years ago ? Not KK, and Suzuki was not around.

Exactly, he was elevated with the habs and now back in his right slot, he wants to be paid for that elevated level and for once it seems MB is smart enough not to overpay.

MB is in no position to play smart ass with Danault. He overpaid Gally and Anderson. He has no option in the org for a player like Danault who is playing against the best opponents centermen. KK is very raw, and Suzuki is just starting to show his stuff. He's got tons of $$$ with Tatar going, as well as Weber injured, ad most possibly, Price gone. + the Drouin's enigma. Are we gonna lose one of the best defensive centerman for a 500K difference ?

Solid two way player. Would love to keep him. But 5 mil is too much. And he wants more than that...

I would not mind losing Danault IF Suzuki and KK were a bit more experienced and really were - both of them - regular top-two centermen (especially KK).

Given both Price and Weber might not play this season, it’s pretty alright to lose a guy like Danault. Honestly Evans may be able to do a lot of what he did. It’s too early to know, but it’s not like Danault was scoring and playing outstanding D. While he is certainly a good player, he is replaceable. Easily replaceable? Some would argue. But replaceable none the less.
