this team is not going anywhere if he remains at the #1 position.

he's the worst captain we had since rob ramage.

Yet we are in a playoff position and the coach, who everyone loves now, relies on him the most in most games. Not to mention currently holding playoff spot while playing defensively sound.

He's fine and I'm glad he's aboard. He's been a good presence for our young ones and we will get better when we find him the suitable partner. He's been playing with random players too many times on his side.

hi genious, carlyle still has not put his finger print on this team, next year.

Yea Carlyle is known to be a players coach, strict but friendly. If he had an issue with that captaincy he'd have notified it and changed it immediately. He stated at the end of the last season we need more leaders to surround dion, and come this season he's one of the most relied players under Carlyle. Funny how that works huh?

I think Phaneuf will take a pay cut and stay with the Leafs. I don't know why people hate him.

The best reason I can think of is, we miss the playoffs, he's the captain, it's better to blame him or Kessel than some 4th line guy.

We have to lock him up before July 1st hits though..Flyers are going to be one desperate team looking for a good D.

They will probably bid for him to help with the loss of Timmonen/Pronger.

People need to realize this:

The Phaneuf that put up 50+ points in Calgary was not a defense first guy. That stigma has followed him...even though he's a much better defenseman now.

Ever since he has become a Leaf, he has played a shutdown role...this team depends on him to play 25 mins and he does it well.

I don't know if Dion fits our long-term because he is not a legit top-pairing d-man as he is made out to be here.

But if we decide to keep, hope it's around ballpark of $5 million because I don't think Dion is worth anything more than $5 mil.

He's everything ya want in a Captain. 5-5.5 is my guess.

Disagree big time. They are miles better options on this team for captaincy than Dion.

He would actually be one of the last choice I would pick as a captain.

This city is a miserable place for defenseman, first we ran Larry Murphy out of town, and then Bryan McCabe, I sincerely hope we don't do the same thing with Dion Phaneuf. He is a phenomenal defenceman that doesn't get his fair credit, I would resign him at his current cap hit in a nano second.

@BillyD

So...Phaneuf is a terrible defenseman that is hated because one of his shots injured Lupul and he was drunk and singing in some Calgary bar before he was traded here?

Very sound logic indeed.

---

Thanks zeke for debunking the myth.

Phaneuf scores more goals than most of the players ahead of him on that list.

Here's how I see it... Dion is currently 27, with 1 more year left at 6.5 mil. His new contract will kick in for the 2014-15 season, when Dion will be 29. If we give him the deal I proposed, which was 8 years $40 million, but front loaded, it breaks down as follows:

Year 1: $7 mil, age 29
Year 2: $6 mil, age 30
Year 3: $6 mil, age 31
Year 4: $5 mil, age 32
Year 5: $4 mil, age 33
Year 6: $4 mil, age 34
Year 7: $4 mil, age 35
Year 8: $4 mil, age 36

For his last year in his 20s, he is actually getting a raise. And for ages 30 and 31, he still makes $6 mil, which is very fair. However, after that the salary begins to go down, as he will inevitably start to decline. This deal essentially takes him close to retirement, while providing him with long term security, big money for his prime years, and fair money for his inevitable decline, all while giving his team a very friendly $5 mil cap hit, allowing his team to get better and have a better chance at winning. This is the best case scenario for both sides IMO.

I really like this as well, good job.

It's not my money so I don't care what our most important player gets paid. It's gotta be one of the least of the teams concerns. He logs the most minutes, puts up the most points over a season for a D and is responsible for shutting down Sid, Malkin, OV, Stamkos, Tavares. If he was on the open market I have no doubt at all that he would get 7M a season.

I would be happy if he got fair market value. I would be happier if we jettisoned the real cap problems on our team, or made better use of them. Phaneuf and his 6.5M contract don't hurt this team. It's wasting big money on 3rd line free agents that ties our cap up unnecessarily.

Description of PDO (i.e. lower is better): PDO is the sum of "On-Ice Shooting Percentage" and "On-Ice Save Percentage" while a player was on the ice. It regresses very heavily to the mean in the long-run: a team or player well above 1000 has generally played in good luck and should expect to drop going forward and vice-versa.

He is a legit #1, lock him up long term. 6mil cap hit.

Get a defense first #2 guy and we are set since Reilly+Gardiner will make tons of offense.

He may not be as good defensively as those guys, but since coming to Toronto, he is in the same range. Offensively, I think Phaneuf is at least as good as those 2.

Definitely fit to be a #1 guy.

maybe, maybe not.....but the one thing we know for sure is that those two have played in front of super-elite goaltending over that time, where Dion has played in front of near league-worst goaltending most of his time here.

Another valid point. But there is no questioning that he is a #1D
