I hope he trades Lucic. Bad FA signing lousy in OT and worst player for the money on the team.

And we already have 6 losses. We had 26 afairc last season.

Kings are already 10pts ahead. Only one team behind us, the NHL relegation team.
To be fair if you’re including ot losses this year in your tally you should include them on your tally for last year as well which would be 35, not 26.

heh, I was being dramatic, I was hoping nobody would notice. ;) But still I think its silly the way the NHL combines all wins into one column and then seperates out losses. It gives the look of teams having a better win/loss record than they have. I'm not a big fan of 3 point games. Unless the setup was that regulation wins are worth 3pts, OTW 2pts and OTL 1pt. Its stupid to have some games worth 3 pts and others worth 2 pts. Every game should be worth 3 pts in a 3 pt system.

An OT win shouldn't imo be worth the same as a club that managed to win in regulation time. Its worse still that a pony show shootout *victory* is the same pts as a Reg W.

Silly or not, it's the way it works.

I do think there is some overreacting going on, while also fully recognizing the risk of the Oilers dropping too many games here to start the season. At a certain point catch up becomes too hard and the season ends up spoiled. But we aren't at that point yet. Every loss is one step closer to that point though.

Yeah but Chia didn't deserve one thread and he damn well doesn't deserve two.

Neither does ****ing on him in a thread where it's about the positive things he has done. At this point I don't know why the mods don't just lock this up because all I see in here is everyone having a B**** slapping fest of epic proportions and it's turning this whole area into a toxic wasteland. HFBoards is a complete and utter joke right now and from someone who's been here since 2006 and has PRAISED this site over and over for good quality posts. Now it's just a toxic wasteland of utter trolling and garbage. Even in the dark days it wasn't this bad. It's just plain awful. It's got to the point where I have ignored over 140 people on here. I have never ignored more than 20. And the worst part? I see 1 good quality post out of 30 and it makes the forum dry and pointless to read.

So good job trolls and garbage spewers. You win the day again.

I'd rather the Oilers win personally.

And if they were winning don't you think it would be a bit more positive on here?

How can you say this with a straight face? Chia inherited a team in Boston that won the cup then ran that team into the ground and is now running the Oilers into the ground. He couldn't make a read of his team and make a good trade or signing if it slapped him in the face.

This is a ridiculous statement and I've seen a lot of these from you.

Chia was hired by Boston in 2006 and won the Cup in 2011. He did not inherit a Cup winning team, he added a lot of pieces that turned them into a Cup contender. His problem was running them into cap trouble post-Cup which btw happens with most Cup winning teams and the Seguin trade which, rightfully so, will haunt him forever but he did play a big part in building that Cup team.

How did he run the Oilers into the ground? It has been a very disappointing start no doubt but 2-5-1 after a 103 point season isn't running the team into the ground and those calling for him to be fired are being way overdramatic. He had a disappointing offseason but sorry, these kind of statements calling for him to be fired 8 games after a remarkable turnaround season are absurd.

He shouldn't be fired now but if the Oilers miss the playoffs (or are well out by the time the TDL rolls around) then he should be turfed. His off-season "strategy" is costing the team right now and these trends were predictable as far back as July.

I don't think Eberle would make any difference here. The trade stunk because of who was brought in for Eberle, not the fact that Eberle was traded.

The team has started slow out of the gate because the goaltending was subpar up until recently, the injuries and the top pairing has been subpar. The support players are playing just as poorly as they did last year. Eberle being here wouldn't have changed a thing. What Chia should have done was deal Eberle for a draft pick and use the extra cap space to bring in a depth forward and depth Dman although honestly, I'm not sure how much of a difference that would have made either.

With that said, it was a disappointing offseason and a disappointing start to this season so Chia deserves criticism for that. It's just that the criticism in this thread is so over the top that we can't even see the top anymore, it looks like a dot to us.

I don't think Eberle would make a huge difference either but it wasn't a trade that needed to be made, especially since nothing was done after it. Chiarelli clearly banked on progression throughout the roster and the only player who's shown any is Nurse. The rest of defense ranges from awful to mediocre right now. The offense is practically non-existent, especially when McDavid isn't on the ice.

Goaltending is the reason we even got 3 points on this road trip and now the offense has gone into a coma. Or perhaps this is just how it normally is when players aren't having career years. Kassian signed a nice extension and has yet to even be a factor in any game played so far this year. He has the only ES point in the entire bottom six.

To me it's not simply the Eberle trade. I would've forgiven the trade had that cap space been used to bring in some help but it ended up being a downgrade. Hopefully Chiarelli lets Strome walk in the off-season because like a lot of players he's a big fat nothing right now.

hopefully Chia gives more than 8 games to evaluate Strome and immediately panic and make a trade

I really wish the panic posters would bump all these "I told you the Oilers would struggle!" threads that were posted on here

Well 7 out of 8 games he's been completely ineffective. So there's that.

I didn't think the Oilers would struggle this badly admittedly but it just gives more credence to the idea that Chia really should've done more in the off-season. I said all summer that not enough was done.

So what do you think of the stat that at this point in the season last year, 7 out of the 8 teams in the east who made playoffs were in playoff postion and 6 out of 8 teams in the West who made playoffs were in playoff position t this point of the season?

Nashville last year is the exception, not the rule. Statistically this bad start seriously hurts our chances of making playoffs. Im not saying there is no chance we make the playoffs, but we are in for some tough sledding and we better get our shit together FAST (and i mean next 5 games fast) or we might be toast.

The fact of the matter is that most teams rely a lot on internal growth.
Did you know who Guentzel, Rust and Sheary were a couple of years ago? Did you think that Schultz would turn into a 50 point Dman? Anaheim has a plethora of young players who took a big step in development, same with Nashville and I can go on and on. Until the Oilers draft and develop better, their depth is going to be lacking.

I would have liked to see Chia bring in a depth winger and depth defender but does Jagr, Iginla, Parenteau or some other vet 9 winger move the needle much? Does Eberle being here move the needle much? Franson? Beauchemin?
It would help a bit but the bottom line is that the Oilers need some players who overachieve a bit or surprise a bit if you will. It happens with every team, why doesn't it ever happen with the Oilers?
Mclellan needs to get something more out of these players like most coaches do with young players. I haven't seen much of that outside of Benning and Cagguila in spurts last year.

no doubt we need to get our shit together fast, but the past 3 games have given me hope

we were tied in all 3 games with less than 2 minutes to go...we could've easily went 3-0

yes offense is a concern but Talbot is back to playing like he can, Draisaitl is back and looked dangerous out there...especially on the PP and they still have #97
and if not for the Save of the Year by Murray, and Yamamoto missing a wide open net...Oilers take a 1-0 lead

no, they're aren't close to Cup Contender like the media fawned about all offseason, but they're still playoff team due to Talbot, Drai and McDavid IMO

Internal growth is easier to do if the core of your team is set. Pitts has Crosby, Malkin and Kessel. All three can run their own lines. Then there's Letang a #1D and a PP specialist in Schultz. And a #1 goalie in Murray.

We only got McDavid and Drai at front, arguably a #2D in Larsson. No PP specialist and Talbot. Doesn't help that Mclellan is incapable of getting the best out of his players

I agree. But we cannot afford another stretch like we just had which in concerning since its the beginning of the season. The last 3 games we have been trending upwards which is encouraging but one more 3-5 game lapse and we are essentially screwed. I think that calls for a little bit of concern imo.

Well you're certainly right about drafting and development... Oilers have to be the worst in the league at both. Sure you need internal growth but you need an insurance policy just in case.

It's tough to say how much those players would've moved the needle but when Eberle would currently be our second leading scorer, it says a lot about the depth (or lack thereof) on this team. Chia took the Tambellini approach to the off-season and we've all seen how well that goes for the Oilers in the past.

I dread to think of where this team would be without McDavid. Likely behind Arizona in the standings.

And the Oilers had one of the best scoring duos in the league last year, 2 players who SHOULD be capable of driving 2 separate lines but can't because no young player stepped up enough to be trusted alongside McDavid. They had a top pairing that played like a top pairing last year and a goalie who played like a top 5 goalie. If the Oilers had any support last year, they would have been in the WCF's and who knows from there.

My point is that the core is fine. They need to develop good complimentary players. They already blew their spending wad on complimentary players in Lucic, Sekera, RNH and Russell so not much room for additions through trade and free agency. At least some of the young guys need to step up like what happens with every other team in the league but the Oilers. The vet support players need to be a whole hell of a lot better too.
This isn't like the Oilers of yesteryear that had an overrated core that was made up of what should have been support players. This core is one of the better cores in the league, they need to develop depth internally. It's imperative in a cap world.

The Oilers doesn't need a scoring duo. Our issue is being a one line team. They need a #1, #2 and #3 line drivers in todays's hockey. When each line has a good line driver, they make players on their line better. Just look at Crosby. He turned 2 rookies into 1st liners.

I've been saying this for years. This team rest on RNH taking the next step. Teams are only worrying about shutting down McDavid and Drai. If RNH can't carry his own line, then he should be package for a player that can.

Trust me, I've been pushing hard for McDavid and Drai to split up so no argument from me about separating the line drivers. The problem is that the Oilers have failed to develop proper support players so they are stuck with stacking the top line to generate any kind of offense and that has to change if they are to ever take that next step to Cup contender. A big problem has been players like RNH and Eberle not being developed properly.

There is no easy fix through trade and free agency and it has be done through drafting and developing and the Oilers are still failing at that even with the new regime. Chia not bringing in some depth players in the offseason isn't why they are struggling this season, it has played a small part perhaps but it isn't the main culprit. I'm starting to think that Mclellan deserves some blame for not getting the most out of his players, way too many underachievers on this roster.
