Well, maybe they see him producing at a third-line clip, but I doubt it.

Rutherford has never been most adept at managing contracts, so this isn’t too surprising.

Let us hope that Tanev finds success.

You don't freaking sign a 4th liner to a 6 year deal, even if you don't overpay. A long deal and overpayment is beyond ridiculous.

We didn't even get a ****ing discount for the term! He didn't deserve 3.5 million for 3 years and apparently we're banking on him improving as a 30 year old?

Tanev is only 27.

I will point out that Tanev has been steadily improving since turning pro, so I could see the Penguins thinking he's a new Hagelin. They're not signing a guy on the decline like they did with JJ, Tanev did have a good year last year. I hope people are able to separate the contract with the player when he plays here.

Emp. Don’t make me quote your JJ takes.

This contract is terrible.

I like Tanev but if it's anywhere near three mil per this is a significant over payment. I can't imagine any other team even coming close to that term or AAV.

My brain refuses to comprehend the notion that Brandon Tanev has just gotten 3.5 million a year for 6 years.

I will go puke, then go to bed. Holy shit.

At the end of a 3 year deal he's be 30. So if we're going extra term and keeping the AAV high that means we think he's gonna be improving.

There is just no way that 3.5AAV figure is accurate. It can't be. Nobody is that stupid. I choose to believe that other guy I never believe... Kingjerkski or whatever... who said it was closer to 2.4AAV.

Brett Connolly is signing with the Panthers for 4 years @ 3.5 million
Richard Panik signed with the Caps for 4 years @ 2.5 million
Ryan Hartman signed with the Wild for 2 years @ 1.9 million

Tanev should be making somewhere between what Hartman and Panik are making

The assistant gms and everyone must be dumb as shit to think this is remotely a good idea. The penguins signing scrubs to half a decade deals is a really great trend.
