Wherever there are cheeseburgers.
I don’t think I’m a fan of either the term or the dollars here. Quite the gamble.

I don't know how it's a gamble. All the players in red put up similar numbers to Rust.

It seems just a bit pricey. But you signed Sheary to a $3m cap hit, so this is what happens. You cetaintly have to pay Rust more than that idiot Sheary only 12 months ago.

I just hope his stops getting injured all of the time.

I think just a little high although I did expect him to sign for around this amount. Glad to have him for 4 more years. Really needs to stay on the ice more, although unlikely given his style of play. Pretty much paying him $3.5 with the hope he plays 65-70 games.

Such an important part of this team.

Good deal if last season was his level and not his peak.

Bad deal if it was his peak.

Depends a bit on how the cap keeps going too.

Term worries me less than the dollars. And, it's not the dollars per se. It's that JR needs to make some moves to create sufficient cap space to augment the mix.
I’m just not totally there with Rust yet, like others are. I think he’s a nice player. Speed, versatility, all of that stuff. He’s a decent player. I just am not so sold on him living up to this contract. I can just as easily see us talking about him next year at this time the way some of us talk about Sheary as I can see us talking about him turning that contract into a bargain.

Term is fine, price is a little less than I expected honestly.

Overall it's a decent contract to me. At least compared to Sheary whom I hope we jettison.

I think the extra 2 months of training and rest are going to beneficial to a lot of players on this team, including Rust.

My only concern with him; and I have this concern with most younger guys who get their first big contract, is that they start to play "softer," than they did on their entry-level contracts. Sheary is a prime example of this in my eyes. I doubt that Rust is that kind of guy, but we'll never know until the season starts.

As a Rust fan boy, I love that he’s staying....it’s a fair contract for both sides, which means it’s not a great deal for the Pens...hopefully it doesn’t have a NMC if need be...

He’s at his peak now at 26...he’s not going to be get better but he’s worth $3.5 mil to the Pens...laying out these contracts to players that helped us win Cups is going to hurt the team substantially if we can’t keep getting younger players in on cheaper contracts...

This signing will be a failure if JR can’t move Sheary now...and let’s hope it’s Sheary and not Hags because someone has to go and Hags helps this team more...

Look up how much wingers hovering around 45pts a season get paid. Then how many of those can pk (successfully) and play either a defensive or offensive role on any line? Rust < 4M is a steal imo.

The cap continues to rise and as a result role players will continue to be more expensive, especially proven ones.

Rust could have gotten more from the Pens or any other team imo. How many wings in our history have been able to find chemistry with Sid AND Geno..yet could also happily play a fourth line role? Rust has proven himself in all aspects of our lineup in both the regular and post season- for multiple years. This signing is more of a steal than a gamble. Sheary was a gamble that failed.

It isn’t a stupid signing like many of the players last year. It’s not a gross overpayment or anything. But it’s not a bargain either. He just makes me nervous with how many games he misses.

People continue to peg him as an automatic 40 points scorer. His career high, in a contract year, was 38 points. Plus, he’s 26 - it’s not like he’s suddenly going to break out.

It’s a good deal for everyone because of his versatility in that he can play on any line.

Except Sid's.

(and again, on the RW, not the LW)

I mean, it's fair for him as a player, but this is too much for him to be playing on your 4th line RW, and too much for the LW version of Rust. I thought it would make sense to trade Rust and a 1st for Skinner or some other LW, effectively converting Rust into a LW. But this move alone I don't like. I have to assume there's more yet to come in terms of our RW/LW balance, as this has to mean Hags is gone next year, and Sheary is gone this year.

I do like that we're keeping our identity, but he's got to be on RW to live up to this deal in my opinion, and he shouldn't be with Sid.

It's a fair deal, but I think it shows a trend for JR. He's done a great job overall as a GM, but he rarely gets the better of the contract vs the player. Not a terrible thing as pissing off players in contract negotiations has risk involved, but it would be nice to get a few bargain contracts on proven players.

Pens are still in the win mode and can make necessary moves next year if the team looks to be declining. Rust is insurance for Sprong and eventual trade of Kessel. Yes to high a AAV for me but Sheary got to much relative to his real worth. But no question Pens have to move a couple contracts. Sheary and Hunwick are the obvious. If the new signing of the D man works out, one of the LH D contracts need to go. Preferably Olli since he would fetch a nice return.
