I mean, his 13year contract ended up being an underpayment, so I think 2-3yrs at 12M is a fair ask

I think the Caps can remain competitive with Ovie at 11 for 4-5 years. I see Connor McMichael being an impact player for them and he's gonna be cheap for a few seasons. Alexeyev and Fehervary will bring help at defense. Samsonov. Their core will remain good. Kusnetsov is still in his prime, Backstrom will always have a 200 IQ, Carlson is a stud.

If they want to save money they can trade Oshie and retain a bit on him, plenty of teams would be interested.

12 mill sounds like a starting asking price. I'm sure he's fine if he gets that but he probably expects the Capitals to bargain a little.

Pass. Said it before. Caps need to rebuild and trade Carlsson, Ovechkin and Backstrom. No sentimental crap. If they don't they will be looking at a decade of garbage. Pitt is already showing them the blueprint how not to do it by kidding themselves that they can still win with Crosby and Malkin.

Ovechkin has 243 points in his last 231 games (1.05 PPG), which works out to 86 points per 82 games

McDavid has 321 points in his last games 224 games (1.43 PPG), which works out to 117 points per 82 games

So, over the last 3 seasons, McDavid has out-scored Ovechkin by 31 points per 82 games

Ovechkin also has a...CUP. And 2 or 3 Maurice Richards.

Ovie at $11m x 4 years

This seems like a tricky one. The only thing I’d question is his want to actually play much longer and commitment to do it at a high level.

Could Ovi sign for 12m over 4ish years and still be an elite scorer? Sure.

Could Ovi sign for that amount and balloon to 325 pounds sipping vodka and cokes from his Gatorade bottle halfway through that deal? Also sure.

Could he still be an effective scorer at that point? They do say the hands are the last thing to go. So, maybe.

Lots of talk about Ovechkin's last contract being an underpayment, but here's question...

Has anyone in history made more money playing hockey than Ovechkin?

He's already made more than 100 million in salary...
