A game of inches. That double OT winner in Columbus was as fluke as they come. So close to being 3-0 Jackets and likely lights out

Just consider if the Jackets win there, we're looking at - in all likelihood - either a bleh Lightning SC win or a yucky Penguins three-peat.

Oh yeah, if CBJ wins in round one, I think TBL wins the cup.

I don't think Vegas was gonna beat them in the SCF. I don't think Pittsburgh was gonna beat them in the ECF either, but I do think Pittsburgh would have made the ECF and fairly easily (6 games maybe) would have discarded their second favorite playoff blow up doll. Especially since Bob stinks in the playoffs, so he may have out-sucked Murray that series quite handily.

I could totally see Washington barely making the playoffs next year and then getting dispatched easily in the first round. Lol

Naturally.

Of course, by that point, Caps fans will be on the "So what? We finally won a Cup last season" mode.

If Trotz is back next season, he's going to have a "free season" in that he won't be on the hot seat.....at least the first season following a Cup win.

Didn't Hartley get fired the year after the Avs won the cup? Or actually, that might have been the season after the season after they won the cup? I realize he was a very bad coach, unlike Barry Trotz, so his leash was probably shorter. I think Harley was still there when they blew up against the Red Wings in 2002 in the WCF. Game 7 was starting to have flashbacks to Roy's end in Montreal. Even Bill Clement started asking how long before Hartley hooks him for Padbesicher because the same thing happened in Montreal about 7 years earlier.

Larry Robinson did get fired during the season in the year after we made the finals and lost to Colorado, which was after back to back cup finals appearance in his first two tries.

Everyone should get a mulligan for this year's failed playoff predictions. It was a weird year. Almost everything that wasn't supposed to happen did happen. Especially in round 2-4. Only us beating Tampa, Philly beating Pittsburgh or Toronto beating Boston in the first round could have made it weirder.

Everything from the Caps beating Pittsburgh and Tampa, to the Golden Knights getting to the SCF, even down to the Caps winning 4 straight in the SCF after losing game 1. I thought it would be going 7 after that, especially if the Caps were to win it all.

The only series I got right with either of the two finalists was the Caps in the first round and the Cup Final (although I thought Vegas would put up more of a fight).

It'll be interesting to see if next year's playoffs are as unpredictable or if it's more normal than this year was.

That team was done in by the loss of Mogilny. They lost their second strong scoring line, AKA line 1B.

We tried out the likes of Salomonsson. I can’t even remember how to spell his name. He was a 28 year old rookie that we took in the fifth (I think?) round the year before. I used to call him the old rookie. God he sucked. He scored a goal on Hasek once! I remember that much! Then there was Pierre Dagenais and Christian Berglund.

Could it happen? Sure. But they have been a division contending team for the last 10 years, save for the Hunter/Oates years when they had an incompetent coach.

So I wouldn’t expect them to fall off a cliff, especially if Trotz comes back. Now they could not win the division because the Metro is strong, but it won’t be because a drop off in their play
