Yeah makes sense that there might be two cohorts of defected players in view of the non season. It's also encouraging that they are talking with Moldenhauer. You're probably right OMG that he wants to make sure our goverment won't impede the season before putting pen to paper. After reading that article I'm cautiously optimistic as Ottawa is a quality program.

Un repêchage hors norme attend les 67’s

The door is still open on Moldenhauer, who will come visit Ottawa in the next few weeks before making a decision. No deadlines mentioned in the article.

As always, JF Plante does a great job covering the team.
Thanks for the article BP. Would be nice if there was more coverage of the poles on this side of the river but outside of Kenny Walls its pretty bad. Sad that we get more insight from Le Droit than the Citizen/Sun.

On another note sounds like the focus of the draft will be up front as we speculated a few weeks back. Hopefully Boyd and his team strike gold. It's an interesting draft imo with a higher potential for hits/misses. On the one hand a player could slide to us at #12 or in the second round that would be picked higher in a normal year ( due to lack of exposure and/or a big development jump in his age 15 year that went unnoticed). Alternatively we could reach on a player that looked great in a small sample size but turns out to be a mirage. Will be interesting. If we come out with a top talent and three contributors out of our first 4 picks I'll be happy.

I agree. The existing rule does state some time after training camp for declaring a defected player. I was thinking the same thing. Since they haven't had a training camp, we'd have the potential of two cohorts of defected players. It may make next year's draft interesting!

If not traded pre-season, I would think all three would go NCAA route over being part of the OHL priority selection process as 18 yr olds. I also think the return in a trade won’t be nearly as great as the returns of recent defects.

You're right that if they don't sign they are likely to go NCAA route and the team will only get a comp pick as a trade will only happen if a player agrees to report somewhere. I also agree returns may be less as the acquiring team has lost a year of service. The exception may be Fantili as I suspect a team would pay a premium for that level of talent.

Just listened to James Boyd on tsn and he said there will be more announcements of commitments in the next week. Said it would involve ontario players as the US/ imports are waiting on making sure there is a season.

Interesting because we do have two drafted Imports with an Import Draft between now and when the Imports will decide.

I wonder if they will adjust the Import Draft rules to accommodate for this issue.

I dunno if they will tweak the rules although a temporary protected list of four would make sense until training camp to see who commits. That being said I still expect Gaidamack to show and likely our first import pick. I don't expect Simontaival to come and besides I don't think he fits our window. I'd rather get a 17/18 y.o. for a run in 22-23.

I agree with that. Gaidamak plus our 1st rounder this year.

Interesting day one as we did address what I perceived as our need the center position. Hard to know how we did in view of the weird year. A few thoughts

1- Barlas was rated as a top ten talent so hopefully he pans out
2- I was surprised Pinelli fell to us in the second, hopefully he reports as rumors had him wanting to join big bro in kitchener
3-Cooper by all accounts is a solid player
4- Gardiner is the intriging one for me. I know it's a weird year but was kind of under the radar. Big kid, good bloodlines. We shall see.

All in all we definitely upgraded our forward depth. Will be quite the competition in training camp which is a great thing.

There are three rankings sites that I've seen. The best of the bunch in nailing the top 50 seems to PuckPreps.
According to their rankings, the 67's are clearly winning the draft
Luca Pinelli #9 (we picked #28)
Chris Barlas #13 (we picked #12)
Jack Dever #21 (we picked #68)
Ethan Quick #25 (we picked #64)
Cooper Foster #35 (we picked #32)
Brad Gardiner #46 (picked #40)

Incredibly, five of them are Centers and the other is a RW. The 67's might have the best forward corps in the league in a few years.

Les 67’s pigent dans leur cour

Another good article. James Boyd said that they have plans for their top five forwards to play for the team. Going to guess that they may hold onto as many as four of them this year. As such, I'm going to try to guess next year's roster pre-trades and import pick.
GOALIES:
Cranley (19)
Donoso (18)
DEFENCEMEN:
Matier (18)-Belanger (19)
Costantini (19) -OVERAGER
Sawyer (18)- Gill-Shane (18)
Mayich (17)- Sirman (17)
FORWARD:
Robinson (19)-Gaidamak (18)- IMPORT
Beck (18)-Tolnai (19)-Sirrizzotti (18)
Johnston (18)-OVERAGER-Moldenhauer (17)
Stonehouse (17)-Barlas (16)-Crete (19)
Foster (16)-Quick (16)-Pinelli (16)

As tempting as it would be to go with a full youth movement, this team will badly need some veteran presence, especially with the year long layoff. Looking around the league, the Soo is absolutely full of 2001's- maybe local kids Joe Carroll or Alex Johnston would be available in a deal.

The second import could be a F or D, just get the best player available and then add the needed OA's to the other unit.

The East division is going to be very tough this season. I can see Kingston, Oshawa and Hamilton trying to make runs this year for various reasons. Ottawa and Peterborough look at this point like teams that are a year or two away. Kingston should be going ALL IN during Wright's last OHL season- they need a big year. The Gens maybe doing the same in what could possibly be Ty Tullio's final season and Hamilton in GM Steve Staios' son Nathan's final season.

Max Donoso has commited to the 67's. Good news as he's apparently a good young goalie. We appear set in goal.

Our two issues are Centre and experienced star type players that are high producers.

The challenge in front of Ottawa this year is their poor 2018 draft. We really didn’t field very much out of that draft and it shows in the poor quality of our 19 year olds:

Tolnai
Cranley
Belanger
Crete
Costantini

IIRC, we traded two 2nds for Robinson as well who was a 2nd rounder in that same draft for Oshawa.

None of those players are poor by any means but none of them are top 3 forwards or top 2 D-Men. Cranley is a starter but with last year being a wash, he does only have 32 games played so it will be tough to go into the season looking at Cranley as a bonafide starter. I have faith that he is but he still has a lot to prove.

We also go into the season with only one somewhat viable Overage player in Varga. With all due respect to Varga, I am not sure he is a difference maker as an OA.

Personally, IMO, we should look heavily at the younger players this year and push that envelop. Take it wherever it takes us. Most likely it will take us near the bottom of the standings but so be it. There is no sense trying to push a square peg into a round hole for this roster. Play out the season status quo and see how things shape up.

The good part about playing status quo is each of the six 19 year olds are poised for Overage seasons so as we approach the deadline, decide which 3 or 4 you prioritize for those spots and trade the others if they aren’t playing a significant role. Tolnai, Robinson, Belanger and Cranley seem to be the most likely impact OA’s next season. Robinson is a bit of a wild card with injuries but after 18 months off the ice, maybe he’ll have had enough time to properly address his issues.

You aren’t far off on this I don’t think. There are a couple areas I think maybe are not going to happen:

1> Varga is omitted. I think because we don’t have an OA, he may very well at least start the year in Ottawa unless he decides to just go to school.
2> You are missing LaForme. He’ll slot in as one of the top 3 centres.
3> I agree that Gaidamak is probably going to suit up in Ottawa. I also agree they will try to bring in another Import. If it is a younger player like a 17 year old, I think it will be a forward. If it is a 19 year old as a placeholder, it will likely be a D-Man. That said, I think they may very well just leave the defence alone entirely and let them do what they can.

Who knows what the combinations will be. I won’t even hazard much of a guess to be honest. Mostly that is because I really don’t see a significant difference between lines #1 through #3. I see a lot of interchangeable parts.

The biggest thing is I doubt they add OA’s unless:
1> It is a cheap acquisition like a 4th round pick
OR
2> They NEED one to fill a gaping hole that is stunting the development of the team.

With no season last year, this team is screaming, “Leave me the Hell alone until the deadline, DAMMIT!” I really wouldn’t do anything other than participate in the Import draft to fill your needs and then aggressively attack the NCAA recruits. There is a lot of room for them to blossom on this roster should they decide to forego NCAA.
