Laaksonen told Marty Biron during training camp that he was up to 185.

He's likely going to need another 20 lbs of muscle and even then, he'll be Tallinder slim.

Now about his unforced errors... that is going to be his limiting factor in making the NHL as anything but a PP specialist type. And right now, they have two PP1 guys in front of him and have a mishmash of possible PP2 guys who get displaced by who of Power or Dahlin isn't on PP1. And Laaksonen is not differentiating himself from those folks. Bryson is the better ES defender. Miller has NHL performance. Heck, Jokiharju can man a PP point and has shown he has some NHL defending chops and puck security.

Just being RHD isn't going to get him to the NHL promised land at this point. He needs to get considerably better at things other than the PP.

True.
Every team in the NHL would have at least two PP point guys ahead of him. So he isn't making the NHL as a PP specialist.

Not saying he can't get there, but from what I've seen so far I'd be extremely reluctant to bring him to the NHL with any level of 5v5 responsibility.

The Islanders are in need of an actual puck mover I believe. They have Dobson, but not much else on the blue line with that type of skillset. Pulock used to be but he seems to have fallen into a more defensive role the past 2 seasons, although he's been injured most of this one. They lost Leddy this past offseason, and Toews the season prior who had been their primary puck movers I believe.

Wheeler has Laaksonen as the Sabres #14 prospect in his annual ranking of NHL prospect pools (Sabres are #1)

Wheeler’s 2022 NHL prospect pool rankings: No. 1 Buffalo Sabres – The Athletic

14. Oskari Laaksonen, RHD, 22 (Rochester Americans)
On one hand, Laaksonen, who was drafted in the third round by the Sabres in 2017, has been around forever and still hasn’t made his NHL debut. And on the other, he still has another year after this one on his entry-level deal, he’s waiver exempt, and I still believe in him as a potential NHL guy even knowing that he’ll turn 23 this summer and this is the last time he’ll feature as a prospect here regardless of whether he makes it or not. Honestly, I still think he has progressed in line with what you’d expect out of a third-round pick, remaining relevant and interesting without being a surefire player. He has a good track record across multiple pro levels, with consistently strong age-adjusted production from the back end. He has shown he can run a power play at lower levels. He’s a 6-foot-2 righty. There’s appeal there. Laaksonen’s game doesn’t come with a ton of flair or ingenuity despite his production, but he keeps his head up and his feet moving when he has the puck, he keeps his shots low and on target, and he generates a lot of rebound assists. He’s got a hard one-timer. He makes the right play offensively more often than not, choosing, for example, when to lay off the shot so that he can hit a teammate’s stick on a redirect. There are some question marks more about the way he defends (he can struggle to maintain gaps and can get carried away watching the play within his own zone) but he’s good organizational depth at minimum, he should be a call-up option in the short term, and he might make it as a No. 5-7 guy in the medium term.

Does Laaksonen have a legit chance at being a Sabre? Haven't heard much noise or excitement about him lately.

His forte is running the PP in the way that Risto was a high hub who can move things around. He's still rail thin which fixing would help him in puck battles, but I'm not a fan of some of his d-zone decision making both with and without the puck. Anecdotally, I see a lot of turnovers and some positioning issues that need to be ironed out.

I'd say no for now. And I'd say that he's a similar sort of PP-guy with flaws that almost every team in the league has kicking around on their farm team so I don't see much value at the moment in trade. So... get him in the gym and see what they can do next year.

More like feed him pea protein and have him flip tires all summer. That might fix the bulk issues... but the problems he has with engagement physically and his lack of puck security are things he's going to have to work out just as much as his capellini sized arms.

He might be a guy that needs to go to a new organization and maybe carve out a few games after some development

He isn’t likely to find a more shallow rhd pool in the other 31 teams. Our depth ahead of him is Joker, Fitzgerald and a wacky inflatable arm flailing tube man with a stick taped to one arm

It’s why I think he is destined to go overseas in two years unfortunately

Kind of cold to add in that "hasn't played a game for the team" line.

I mean, come on, it's the guy's birthday!

The account is MK's, not affiliated with the team.

He could be a guy who takes a serious leap forward this year. Or just turns into another suspect. His non-linear development should also be a cautionary tale for those who think drafting guys who are 150-160 lbs is somehow regularly a good thing. He exhibits habits that one would expect from someone who can't easily absorb impact due to being so scrawny.

So he seems like he is close to being done with Buffalo. His collapse at the end of last season (and general terrible d-zone awareness and play) has limited him to just 9 games so far this season. It's been almost a month since his last game and Appert has said he is not hurt. If anyone needs to be yeeted into every trade proposal as the obligatory filler that actually has no value, it's this guy. Amazing to think he went to the AHL all-star game when he first arrived.
