I don't think you can really judge the transactions that happened in the old pre-lockout 2005 era to today. ..

But I don't think human nature has changed. And when people feel slighted they don't forget.

no kidding johnny mac is still pissed. as is nieds and driver.

edit: and shanny is hell bent on destroying lous legacy lol

I think these people are smart enough to separate business and negotiations from other aspects...people who hated to negotiate with Lou loved him...business is business.

No better examples than Gomez and Holik.

Again most of those guys weren't staying on any team-friendly discounts once they hit FA. If they were really that personally hurt by Lou they would have signed elsewhere for less money, not more. Otherwise it's just about where they were going to get paid the most, not whether Lou said mean things in an arb hearing. That's just a cover story to not come off as the bad guy when you leave.

I don't think you can really judge the transactions that happened in the old pre-lockout 2005 era to today. ..

That much I agree with...in a cap era playing hardball is a little more justified than just having an arbitrary budget.

I don't particularly care about contract issues with Wood at age 27. Maybe he really does become a high end player that can have a long successful career, plus he has already shown he can grow his game. But he's not Shanahan, Hossa or Datsyuk. I'd love for him to prove me wrong and at that point, it doesn't matter - you happily pay him 7-8 or whatever the right number will be at that time to patch over a half-decade old "slight."

The probability is that it doesn't matter because you've likely gotten the best of him at a price that works for you. That's a GM's job and Shero did it. Silly and emotional nitpicking to think otherwise.

Agents will let more kids know the negotiating costs that happen when you burn a year to sign the ELC but human nature changes very slowly. It's too tempting to burn a year in which you might've accrued great negotiating power because most players don't have the guts to bet on themselves (sheer pragmatism + greed).

are we really complaining that woods contract is so beneficial to us that in FOUR YEARS FROM NOW he’s going to feel slighted and not re-sign with us even though he will still be an RFA? amazing

Not that I expect an answer, but I'm wondering what exactly anybody who thinks Wood was "ripped off" thinks he should have gotten and why.

I don't feel like anyone can say what Wood or Bratt's ceilings are. They've both shown absolute elite ability on the ice at a very young age. Two years ago we all thought Wood was a supersonic grinder who would never have the hands or hockey sense to put it all together. All he did was dramatically improve his hands and hockey sense in each year.

Now he holds out for most of training camp, signs a contract, plays two preseason games, jumps on a plane to Europe, and ends up one of the best players in the opener. I mean, it's kind of terrifying.

One more thing I found interesting:
They announced the game as a sellout even though there were clearly some empty seats. I know it happens for normal NHL games when season ticket holders don't show up. But in a game like that? Who buys tickets and doesn't go?

Was wondering it myself. It defs was sold out, no tickets were available for purchase. My best explanation is that europeans dont use the 2nd market sites that much and thus a lot of seats were left vacant even though the event was sold out.

I'm fine with it since there were a lot of Oilers fans in the building. Let them have this experience especially they heard their goal song not even half the time we heard ours :naughty:

Kevin Clark being actually there and announcing made the experience so much better btw.

He did the announcing with enthusiasm(kind of) for the Oilers goal, too.

Oilers fans must've been thinking : "damn. Our PA announcer sucks!"

*wins season opener in convincing fashion*

*complains about Shero not spending enough on Wood's contract*

I haven’t posted in a couple years but have still been reading these boards daily. I just wanted to tell anyone considering doing a trip like this in the future to absolutely do it. It has been the trip of a lifetime. Got to meet a bunch of the coaching staff, Matt/Chico/Dano, people from back home in Jersey, fans from Europe, and great people from Edmonton even. Every single one of them was willing to take the time to stop and have a conversation with us. I was wearing a Mojo jersey and got stopped by his family around town in Gothenburg. I owe his father a beer on his next trip to NJ now! What a fun trip over, truly great event for hockey fans all over. Of course a Devils win makes it that much better :)

Really glad I got to see Devils play live so close to home. Didn't really hang out at the arena well ahead of the game since we ended up going to a local soccer match at 4PM but the game itself was great. Apart from some stupid penalties and couple dodgy Kinkaid passes we absolutely dominated Oilers. Really want to thank the league and Devils for making global series possible.

Have a day to spare in Gothenburg, so I went to a soccer game. And they have REAL beer for just 50 Crowns instead of the 3,5%, sold out in 2nd intermission disaster from yesterday. Feels like heaven!

They probably see Europe as a somewhat untapped market where they can get a lot of new fans. I don't blame them at all for going for it.

Devils moving to Europe in 2024. You heard it here first.
