Edmonton
The Jets have a serious Cap problem in the next two years. Who might be an acceptable target from our group of assets NHL/AHL to get us a 10th OA this year? We are without a 1st Round pick this year and the combination of the cap problem might be an ideal time to trade an asset for a pick.

If you need cap relief, Edmonton is not the place to come. We just spent 2.5 mil on a backup goalie and need to give Nurse a good sized raise.

I think we have maybe 5 million available.

Keeping in mind that cost control is the name of the game, what would you add to Perreault to get 10?

Except you literally disregard Edmonton’s needs and completely underrate Spurgeon.

Obviously that deal is crap, but Spurgeon is overrated as hell if you'd take him over Gardiner and a 1st.

Spurgeon won't get you their 10th or Puljujuarvi. He's 28 and has never broken 50 points while being an undersized negative plus minus player this past season.

Gardiner+1st would be a joke offer for Spurgeon. I can tell from your post you’ve never seen him play more than the games against the leafs. Using +/- as a means to define a player, really?

Why?

I don't hate Gardiner, but they're about the same age, about the same salary (Spurgeon makes ~$1m more, but he's got more years on his contract), and score at about the same rate. But Spurgeon's also very good defensively and I just don't think Gardiner compares there. I think that value gap is greater than pick #25, especially if handedness is an issue (which it probably is for Edmonton).

As to the Puljujarvi + #10 stuff, it's a lot to give up and by no means do I consider Puljujarvi a throw-in. He'd be the meat of the deal for me. But a top pairing RHD that can play in all situations, put up a healthy 35-40 points, is on a reasonable contract for 2 more years, and probably has another 6-7 prime years ahead of him is going to be expensive. Doesn't mean the Oilers should be falling over themselves to pay that price or even that Spurgeon is the guy that they should be after, but I see no reason to accept less than that.

Gardiner is 27, Spurgeon is 28 at the moment.

Gardiner is averaging .63 PPG, Spurgeon .60.

Gardiner was a +9, Spurgeon -6.

Gardiner 6'2 200, Spurgeon 5'9 168.

Based on the player alone Gardiner is the same if not better, Spurgeon is signed for 1 more year than Gardiner.

Neither Gardiner or Spurgeon are worth the 10th or Puljujuarvi.

Now generate a chart for Gardiner vs Suter.

Edmonton has drafted in the top 3 so many times, they should be banned from the top 10 for 10 years ! Time to start penalizing teams that perennially suck and not rewarding them. Give all teams one ball in the lottery, no more then 2 lottery balls per team , and force teams to be competent.

How does this penalize teams that “perennially suck”? Also, how does it not punish teams who have one-off bad seasons?

For

Rnh+ Pulujarvi+10th

Mother of God, no. RNH is absolutely not available and Ghetto/Kerfoot are throw ins.

We get immediately worse and are likely to stay that way.

Arguable as to whether RNH or Barrie is the best piece but JP and 10th >>>> the rest of that.

All that will do is keep bad teams bad, mediocre teams mediocre, and good teams good. The exact opposite of parity.

Or did you forget the Oilers were a 100 point team last year?

It’s a no win situation. People will bash the Oilers for having top picks for years regardless if they are winning or losing. With that being said, Edmonton is close to being a perennial playoff team. Just more fat to cut.

Whatever. If it leads to a Penguins style dynasty then people can say anything they want.

How soon people forget they drafted 5-1-2-1-2 over a five year period.
