Oilers Playoff Magic Number

Good news- Oilers are 7 points out in mid Jan and getting a MASSIVE boost with McDavid and Klefbom coming back. To add to this- Eberle is slowly turning it around, as is RNH. Yak is 2 games in and looking good. Our top 6 could be lethal if everyone turns it on

Bad news- San Jose, Anahiem, Arizona are all on fire and the Canucks just wont die (Sedin is out for a bit tho). The Ducks have awoken, so consider that 2nd spot gone

Thats the hope, but we need some luck on our side to make not only the points, but the games disadvantage. So long as TOPPEP wills it.

Well need a ton of luck, and I dont think we can catch up to SJ/Ana/Arizona or even Van

But hopefully, somewhere in the hockey universe, the hockey gods have credited our account for alot with the McDavid and Klefbom injuries and we can make a luck withdrawal in the next 20 games and go on a tear

Although our account is probaly frozen after the 2015 draft lotto

we have to go 18 - 14 - 4 to have a 0.1% chance of making the playoffs

2 | San Jose | 44 | 24 | 18 | 2 | 50 | 20 | 74 | 37 | 84 | 42.0

4 | Vancouver | 45 | 18 | 17 | 10 | 46 | 15 | 78 | 39 | 78 | 39.0

7 | Edmonton | 47 | 19 | 23 | 5 | 43 | 15 | 81 | 40.5 | --| --

This magic number is set up to be 1 point above the team in 3rd place. The Oil to beat columns indicate how many points and wins (ties=.5 wins) the Oilers need to get or the corresponding team needs to lose for the Oilers to pass them. As the season draws closer to the end I will begin to indicate who hold tie breaker over each other.

Yesterday games:
Edmonton vs Florida 4-2 EDM (PAC. DIV: OTB PTS -2, OTB W -1)
Buffalo vs Arizona 2-1 BUF (ARI: OTB PTS -2, OTB W -1)
Ottawa vs San Jose 4-3 OT OTT (SJ: OTB PTS -1, OTB W -0.5)

Todays Games to watch out for:
Calgary vs New Jersey
Vancouver vs New York Rangers
Edmonton vs Tampa Bay
Dallas vs Los Angeles

For today we need an Oil Win (obviously)
Plus we want Winnipeg to beat Colorado
Plus no OT for Van/Cgy with a slight (.1) edge to Calgary winning

Starts with an Oilers Win! I believe

I think the wildcard might be more attainable, as Anaheim is on a major roll 10 points up with still 2 games in hand, while Nashivlle is even up with oilers on games, and only 9pts out.

But you have to keep an eye out for Minnesota who is 1pt and a game back of Nashville for that wildcard spot. But yes technically speaking right now the wild card is more obtainable then the 3rd place int he Pacific.

That's the biggest issue here too many teams to chase , even when the oilers won 2 in a row they gained nothing. With Nashville winning handily tonight u are now 11 pts out of the wildcard as well. I wonder when chirallei decides to pull the chute and start selling off players like Purcell and Schultz

Probably closer to the deadline when comparable players like Hudler and Vrbata get moved. Establishes the going price.

Too many teams to catch is the least of the teams problems. The bigger problem is the fact that this roster simply isnt good enough.

Maybe yesterday was a reality check, because it seemed like after the 2 wins, there was a lot of media articles, claiming the oilers were suddenly playoff bound with the return of mcdavid and the early returns.

McDavid effect was definitely in force in the media and even on HFOil here... where even the crustiest of us who absolutely know this team is set up for failure in its current configuration, couldn't help but be swayed over to the fantasy of McDavid carrying this team on his back.

McDavid is extremely good... but even he has his limits and needs at least a majority of the team going in the same direction instead of the majority being anchors and deficits out there.

Agreed. Hope for next year maybe but any hope for playoffs was long gone, these two losses just put the nails in the coffin and danced on the grave.

Maybe one more stinker can be the dead parrot sketch.
