Mactavish doesn't do talent evaluations unfortunately. Once he's decided he doesn't like a player - they are gone. We saw it with Smid, and we are seeing it now with Petry.
It's not something that requires logic or common sense to him(or anyone else), because it's based on his gut instincts(ie - he emotionally decides things). Hence where he shows his support tends to be full of inconsistencies and double standards(kind of like how Eakins is a great coach, and Nelson can do no right).
The really funny thing is, he's actually stated that he believes he's a strong and decisive talent evaluator when referencing his past as a coach
Conversely, when he decides he likes a player, no amount of logic or sub-par play will affect his thoughts going forward or his utilization of that player. Which is why I believe Petry is being shown the door to make more room for someone with "Norris potential".
