Per @HockeyRumorsAndTrades:

"The Edmonton ‪#‎Oilers‬ have invited undrafted Russian sniper Vladimir Tkachev to training camp. Tkachev, who was likely passed over due to the " Russian factor" & his small frame, posted 30 points in just 20 games for the ‪#‎QMJHL‬ Moncton ‪#‎Wildcats‬ this year after coming over from Russia midseason. He then added 7 goals and 9 points in just 6 playoff games, too. Prior to that, he’d had a cameo in the ‪#‎KHL‬ and posted 19 points in 16 games. Stylistically, Tkachev has been compared him to ‪#‎TBLightbing‬ rookie sensation Tyler Johnson and is projected as a potential second-line scorer and power play specialist (14 of Tkachev’s 30 regular season points came on the man advantage)."

"Tkachyov is a shifty and highly skilled Russian forward that loves to generate offensive chances. He skates very well and generates good speed, has explosive acceleration and impressive lateral quickness makes him elusive with the puck. The tiny forward is a magician with his hands. (August 2013)"

----------

When I saw him at the Summer Development camp last week with Russia playing alongside Barbashev and Buchnevich that line really stood out to me.

----------

Regardless this doesn't hurt to bring in more competition and if we turns out to be something then that's a bonus.

Could be this year's Sergei Tolchinsky.

He went undrafted last year and was signed by Carolina after their camp.

He blossomed offensively on the Greyhounds and looks to be worth the contract.

Woudn't mind seeing Tkachev get a contract.

According to capgeek, we have 47 players under contract after Schultz is signed. So we do have room to offer him a contract if he shines in camp.

Apparently there is a window to sign an undrafted player... this type of signing has been done before by Carolina...

edit..
dnicks17 beat me to it... should have refreshed the page :)

Could be a decent signing though... if the guy can grow... at all... could be a good darkhorse longshot signing. Skillwise... obviously better than many other Oilers in the pipeline that will never see NHL ice either so he's worth a shot.

at least he's not overrated hyped like "johnny hockey" who's going to win the calder, because of his kane like stick handling and the great one's vision.

I think it's safe to say that if he played in the Gretzky era he would shatter all of Gretzky's records.

Oh wait, I'm not a flamer and this isn't about Gaudrea. My bad.

I think it's been mentioned before... but drafting Russians (or in this case just letting them try out after going undrafted) is a bit of a moneypuck move.

We all know there is the Russian factor that pushes NHL teams away from drafting some Russian prospects... even skilled ones... so if the Oilers can take advantage of that... they may possibly get some talented players that they couldn't get otherwise.

Oilers obviously have to look at every angle possible as they aren't a premier destination so this is one way of trying to turn that disadvantage around... by finding prospects who themselves aren't particularly sought after because of factors beyond their actual playing ability.

Great move.

Also hilarious thinking of some of the more... Bizarre... Draft choices of the Oilers, this guy is just a camp invite.

His stat lines are interesting.

And although camp invites are risk-free, what are they expecting to see from this kid? After Omark, Rajala, Rieder and the other half dozen undersized wingers who've gone through the system, what would he have that they didn't?
