Just like many other teams, we have gone through cycles. Ironically, the closest we ever got to a Cup in the last 30 years was with a team that was the definition of mediocre all year long. We came out of the lockout with a team that was well above mediocre until the playoffs. We got to watch the career of one of the greatest players of that generation. Then we went through a few lean years again and since the rebuild, we've had several very exciting seasons. Say what you want about the 2014-15 team, but if you didn't enjoy that season, I would find it hard to relate to you. And last year there was only one team less mediocre than us all year long.
I just think it's silly to get too hung up. We've had a few seasons in a row now of teams winning the Cup after appearing to have wasted their window many, many times over before. It's never as simple to put together a champion as you seem to think, and the reality of the situation is that it is much more likely to not with the Cup than it is to win one even if the GM does everything perfectly. The salary cap era is such that every team is mediocre. Some are just more mediocre than others.
Anyway, I'm ready to put this game behind us. We played effective hockey those first two games out of the break, and then we weren't in any way ready to play tonight. Hanifin is in a massive slump and appears to have lost his confidence, but he's pretty much what Brodie was during the Hamilton years, and Brodie snapped out of it, so there's hope. We get San Jose next, and it's a chance to start something positive instead of dwelling on one bad night.
