Yep, I'm just asking why. I find that the new thread makes it difficult to track conversations from the old thread. I assumed there was some underlying data management issue or something.

I run my own forum on VB and I do the same. It's because threads are causing a lot of problems if they are too big. Loading time goes up and it just reduces the functionality of the forum.

Uh, lets not pretend that many of those conversations were worth tracking...

Can't believe we let stralman go

We should have dealt Yandle at deadline

We never should have traded for Eric Staal

Andddddddd go

It's concerning to me that this front office thought the team had enough of a chance this past season to not move Yandle at the deadline and then add Staal in a "go for it" move.

I distinctly remember the Rangers playing some of their worst hockey of the year from Feb - Apr, yet it felt to me like the front office just ignored how inconsistent and downright bad at times the team's play was down the stretch.

Also as the season went on the Rangers lost every big game they faced last season

Still think that trade could've worked well if we used EStaal as a LW to bump Kreider or Miller to be Hayes's winger. Trading Yandle when we were 3rd in the conference was never going to happen either.

Back to the real topic, we should have a new defenseman soon, and I'm really curious to see what deal Gorton can swing. There's a lot of promising young RHD that are NHL ready or on the cusp, but we'd have to give to get. Then you have the established RFAs like Trouba and Lindholm that would cost an arm and a leg.

Really don't want to give up what a Trouba/Lindholm would cost.

I'm hoping they are targeting someone like a Montour, a talented puck moving Dman caught up in a numbers game. Doubt there are many of those guys out there however, especially in a season such as this with the expansion draft looming.

I don't disagree with the Staal trade but please do tell me when the last time that a team who was firmly entrenched in a playoff spot sold at the deadline?

I'll wait.

It all comes down to whether you want to base your immediate future on an established young talent or a young talent with potential. The former have proven to have NHL ability and will immediately improve us short and long term. The latter is built off outstanding play in a lesser quality league. Same goes for a guy like Honka or Jordan Schmaltz. They've proven everything they can at the AHL level, but they're unknowns at the NHL level. It's tough to view everything in the scope of the Brass-Zibanejad trade, but I think that's the direction Gorton prefers. He wants young players that are cost controlled, but are proven NHL players. This is obviously so much easier said than done.

I wouldnt call what Trouba wants as "cost-controlled"

I also dont see the value in trading Klein, only keeping him. Same goes for Zucc. Rob Peter to pay Paul.

Still dont understand the Pirri signing. Too many forwards before we signed him.

Team needs to get to camp and see what we got

Pirri only makes sense if Nash or Zuccarello is dealt for a dman. It doesn't make sense if it was to keep Vesey or Buchnevich in AHL and piss them off. If JV or PB get sent down without giving them a shot with the big club it drastically hurts their positioning for future KHL or NCAA FA moves (if they were promised spots, which lets be honest they probably were).

The non-rookies making less than Pirri are Fast, Lindberg, Gerbe and Jooris. We know AV loves Fast, so you would think it's those other three at risk, specifically the last two with OL on LTIR. I still think trade(s) are coming.

Let´s get a bit radical and stay with the topic of this thread on this very last day of summer (I see it that way at least - September is explicitly an autumn month in the temperate zone; WC is played, NYR camp starts, prospect tourney in Traverse City, leaves change colors from green to a cavalcade of hues, change of the wardrobe takes place, aurora borealis returns and lights up the heavens, perhaps the first frost, trout & salmon begin to spawn, my glasses contents go from beer to whiskey...).

I can totally see the reasoning behind the trade of Brassard and the wanting of some of the senior, knowledgeable posters on HFNYR to move our leading scorer in Zucc (and Nash too of course, which goes without saying, esp. if the return is amicable) now for younger, cost controlled assets that peak in 3-5 years. If one were to follow this thesis about seriously retooling then what about looking into maybe our biggest prize asset?

Ryan McDonagh.

27 years old as per June 13. Three contract seasons left at very reasonable $4.7 M. Will be due for huge money in 2019 when he is 30 and signs for 7 or 8 years taking him to 37 or 38. That will be a toxic contract - if there ever was one. That decline might be the worst one yet (at least bang for the buck as the contract will likely be over $7M). We have been down this road before as well - and it never turns out the way management intends (talking Redden, the Twins, Boyle...).

Could we benefit from exploring this at least? I seriously do not know. But it is worth discussing IMO. Cashing in on him now could likely bring a MEGA return. I mean really huge. If it does not, then not interested at all. But some win now team might feel desperate enough to really help the NYR org. stockpile assets - for both now and later. Price of high quality D:s in the league are insane right now.

McDs injuries and drop off are also a bit concerning IMO. He does not have a no trade clause (Yes - I know that he is in his prime or at least should be + is team captain). Finding another amicable long-term solution on the left side via UFA/trades/whatever would also be easier than on the right one (too).

"Get younger. Get better."
"Last kick at the can with this group".

Flame away! Or come with some ideas of a realistic return for the "C" - for the sake of discussion - on this last day of summer.
Peace.

Obviously if this move were to be made it would be intended to pay dividends in 5 years or so, but moving McDonagh right now would be absolutely disastrous for our defense.

Our top pairing LHD would be Staal until Skjei is ready, which could take another year

The inconsistent and bad play wasn't just during the stretch....they'd been playing that way from the start of the season....they won a number of games they should have lost.

None of the newly signed depth players make any of the top 6 guys available. You don't replace Nash or MZA with Grabner or Pirri. If Gorton trades them, it will be for other considerations, not because he acquired scraps from other teams on the cheap.

Uh, lets not pretend that many of those conversations were worth tracking...

Why such an approach to it? :) I thought that was the whole point of debating something - you need to be positive and you can train actually to not get emotional involved even though you don`t necessary agree with someone.
It`s a good life lesson too - especially if you are dating someone, or is married with someone. ;)
