I don't hate these cuts for 2 reasons:

1) These 2 will be the first call ups if any of our forwards go down. We will see both of them in a Canucks uni at some point this season.

2) They can develop in the AHL and McCann/Virtanen can't. Obviously the ideal situation would be ditching 2 of Prust/Dorset/Higgins but it looks like we will have to wait until the offseason for that.

Interested to see what happens with Vey now. Will Benning swallow his pride and waive him?

Sbisa easily outplayed Weber and Corrado in the preseason imo. His contract is still an eye sore but he didn't play his way off the team.

What?

Sbisa had a decent game last night but was one of the worst players on the ice in every other game. He's been worse than everyone except Corrado and in a fair world both would be in the AHL.

I think it's pretty much a given that Gaunce is going to get cut isn't it? send him down and let him playtop 6 plus be a fixture on spspecial teams. Maybe even give him a go at center again. Get a few NHL games this season, on the team next year.

I don't know how you can lump Higgins into that group. -_-

Lol. This is pretty crappy for Gaunce. Only bubble guy who really outplayed him was McCann.

Even if McCann outplayed Gaunce, Gaunce is still more NHL ready and more suited to the bottom-6 role now that it looks like Daniel and Baerstchi are the top two LWs.

The only way this makes sense is if they want to give McCann the 9 games to see if he can take another step. If he doesn't, send him back to junior and call Gaunce up to replace him. However, if McCann sticks, Gaunce is stuck down there even though he's a better option than anyone on our 4th line.

He might not even be the first call-up if we suffer injuries. Shinkaruk, Grenier or even Cracknell might get the first opportunity depending on what player gets hurt.

2 more cuts to make (minimum). Cracknell, McCann, Virtanen, Vey, Corrado, Hutton, Biega on the bubble.

Cracknell, Biega cut and we got a team.

Weber has been soft and before last night hadn't shown any of the offence that he needs to bring to be an asset. I think Sbisa has been better overall.

Weber was just quiet offensively and seemed to be fighting the puck a bit. His defensive play was fine.

Sbisa has, as usual, completely stank at both ends of the rink.

Cracknell and Biega go down and that leaves us with 24. If Higgins is an LTIR option then either Horvat or Hutton can be placed in the minors to declare a roster and then brought back up after LTIR is declared.

Weber will start to produce once the #1 PP line is established in the regular season.

They keep putting forcing Alex "The Shin Buster" Edler on there and it never works. Weber showed last year that he can produce once he's given consistent opportunities in that spot.

second unit? That would require the team to run a powerplay of the left side though and we all know how reluctant the team is to do that...

Not because of player quality but because of his role being taken by Gaunce.

Understood.

But replacing Higgins with Gaunce would be a downgrade, or a lateral move at best if Gaunce develops during the year.

Gaunce in for Prust is the clear choice, if everything was fair.

Looks good, although I'd replace Edler with Tanev :naughty:

If McCann did just pull off a very dick move, then he's more like Kesler than we imagined.

That's what I mean.

McCann only arguably outplayed him. Sure, he didn't get as many points but overall, Gaunce was much more solid and more than held his own against NHLers.

He also has PK ability and was a perfect fit for Higgins' spot. He was totally ready to step in and you're exactly right, there's no guarantees that he's the first call-up. We like to say that but the situation is fluid and things change.

It really sucks for a guy who totally should have at least gotten the last preseason game.
