I don't understand the vitriol in this thread. If the Leafs are shopping Nylander and the Isles can come to contract terms with him, this is a very very fair return for a 22 year old, versatile, 60+ point player. Prospects getting overvalued on HF, as usual. I'd make this deal.

I probably would too. Dobson would be someone I'd consider a fair return as a D prospect.

Leafs need to mange the salary cap to be able to sign core pieces-

TO NYI
Nylander- Can help offset JT point production. Nylander has a proven track record of producing at the NHL level. He is versatile can play centre or the wing. He can think the game at a high level-likely play well with Barzal... Lou knows Nylander well and would feel comfortable making a trade for him as he knows what he is getting.

TO LEAFS-
Bellows
Dobson

Leafs solve their cap problems by getting two controllable assets. Bellows has a great shot a bit of a power forward who can score.

Dobson- the coveted right shot D with lots of potential. However, potential is a dangerous word as it is not yet known if Dobson skill set will translate in to the NHL.
Dobson has been the isles most impressive kid at prospects camp and training camp.

I would not give up Dobsob alone for Willie ' overpay me ' Nylander to play wing.

I'd rather that thank you.
I said that he may be offer sheeted thinking that for 8 million on the dot would be too much for the leafs. I'm sure you guys would take him for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. If we would match it then I just wouldn't have guessed.

Not guaranteed.

Of course they’re not guaranteed, that’s not the point.

NYI’s top shutdown defenseman is Johnny Boychuk, a 34 year old with bad knees who continues to miss more games every year due to injury.

Noah Dobson is the arguably the organization’s top prospect and is unanimously the top shutdown defenseman prospect. With the fact in mind that the Islanders gave up the most goals in the NHL last year, Dobson’s value to the organization is insanely high.

Nylander’s great, but the Islanders have substantial needs on the blueline. They can’t ignore those needs by cashing in prospects for an NHL player who doesn’t even play the position they have their high priority need in.

I agree with (what seems to be your thought process) that in certain circumstances, it makes sense to trade prospects (who are “not guaranteed”) for an NHL player(s), but there are other factors that are involved in that decision, and for this particular proposal, those factors outweigh the benefit of acquiring an NHL player now for the Islanders.

7 years at 7.5 million offer sheet. 1, 2, 3. Keep Bellows and Dobson.

How difficult is it to understand the isles are deep in scoring wingers, but weak on D?
Not giving up top prospects for a 60 pt winger, who is a luxury item and not a necessity.

Its a fair deal.
Nylander was drafted 8th overall. The other two were well out of the top 10. Willie has proven it at the NHL level. The other two haven't.
It’s not the isles fault that the habs yotes and rags were idiots, Wahlstrom and Dobson are both players that should’ve been off the board well before picks 11 and 12

Islanders don't have their own 2nd and 3rd rounders next year so that may be a problem if they thought of offer sheeting Nylander(all that being said I wouldn't bother offer sheeting Nylander even if we had those picks). As an Islanders fan I hope we offer sheet Matthews, 7 years 84M sounds fair

Isles could then ship out Anders Lee at what is plausibly the peak of his value (to a team with whom he'd re-sign), and get a young, NHL-ready/proven D in return. Nylander is also a center who's been forced to W by the Leafs C depth.
