Because Hanifin is already what you hope Sergachev will become.
Doing this means you can trade Sergachev+ for Duchene.
Fills both your top pairing D slot beside Weber, and your top line C slot.

What?

Are we living in some parallel universe where Hanifin is some kind of established top pairing defenseman?

Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, as they say. Absolutely ridiculous.

Do you think Kapanen is ready to play in the NHL right now?

Absolutely. I think he has tremendous potential to work his way up a lineup. I really look forward to seeing where Babcock plays him next year, to be honest. Dmen take a little longer to show their NHL potential, so it's tough. We need a potential top4 minute muncher to compliment our more free wheeling guys.

well he's been bad enough that treating him like he's still elite 4th overall pick type value is a mistake.

He's never been "bad." He's been frighteningly average at times, which you should rightfully expect from a 19-20 year old d-man. But he's never been bad - he's always remained more asset than liablity in terms of what he gives to the team when he's on the ice.

The thing about Hanifin is, his skating is sooooo ridiculously good for a defenseman that his floor is very high even if he somehow manages to not improve in other areas. He could literally not improve at all and still be Bret Hedican for the next 20 years.

Toronto offers Kapanen and 2017 1st round pick for Hanifin

Still a "No."

Toronto isn't a viable candidate to trade for Hanifin because he's only getting moved for an ideal return if he gets moved at-all...and TML are not moving Nylander or Marner for him.

Everybody knows Toronto isn't moving them for Hanifin, so there's nothing to talk about.
