Toronto can't get higher than 11th, so it's either lose and 12.5% chance of 1OA, or go for the Cup

Don't ask me why because I don't know, but I'm hearing from multiple sources that beating Carolina and getting a lottery pick is out now.

It required two placeholder teams to win the lottery, not just one.

The way I see it, the only way we can win #1 is for NYR to lose and win with their own pick. I don't believe its possible to win #1 with Carolina's - regardless of what Toronto does. Toronto CANNOT finish inside the top 10 unless they win #1 - right? Which means no matter what, Carolina would retain a winning #1 pick.

We could have if there was a second placeholder team that got a lotto pick.

And then we'd need Carolina/Toronto to lose, and then Carolina would have to win the 1OA placeholder, and TOR would have to have won the 2OA/3OA placeholder.

So right now, only one of Carolina or Toronto can win 1OA. If Carolina wins it, we get the Toronto pick which is outside the lotto. If Toronto wins 1OA, they will pick there, and we get the CAR pick outside the lotto.

No, it's no longer possible for the Rangers to win the Cup and 1OA. Needed a second placeholder team to get a lotto pick.

Carolina owes us the later pick of either their own 1st rounder or Toronto's. Toronto's is top 10 protected. So if Toronto falls somehow into the top 10 we get Carolina's pick and Toronto owes Carolina their 1st rounder in 2021.

We will have one of either Toronto's or Carolina's 1st's in this draft though + our own. At least one of the Rangers, Leafs, Hurricanes are going on to the playoffs but it could be two depending on whether Toronto defeats Columbus.

It's confusing but it's possible the Rangers could end up with Lafreniere but our best chance IMO is if Carolina knocks us off in the play in. It isn't a sure bet though--it will depend on who else makes the playoffs. If the Rangers don't make the playoffs they start off in the 14 position just because the loser of the Toronto/Columbus playin series is going to be the 15 team.
