You weren't going to buy Cory out last offseason- and they still aren't. He's more likely to retire or go on LTIR, than buy him out. He'd cost too much
No it wouldn't cost too much to buy him out. Maybe last year it would have, but not after this year. It wouldn't cost that much more than buying out Mike Cammalleri 2 years ago.

It would be 4 years of a $2 million buyout. So if we don't buy him out, we have an unplayable goalie that costs $6 million for the next two years after this, plus whatever we're paying another goalie. You can probably find 2 goalies better than current Schneider and you'd spend less money on them combined than what he's making the next two years.

Although, maybe he will decide to retire, because how many more times over the last two years of his deal is he gonna give the same ''I need to be better. I let my teammates down, they deserved to win the game and I didn't'' line in the post game? I don't think the guy plays bad on purpose, he just doesn't have the ability to play at an acceptable level in this league anymore.

While I agree with most of your post, and I'll brush past any SV% mention since we'll agree to disagree - I'll take offense at the above statement...

One was a true hockey player and goalie who could read the play, understood the nuances of goaltending and would do what his team needed to win a game. The other was an athlete who relied upon quickness, reflexes and positioning with all sorts of flaws in his overall goaltending game. In the NHL, any chink in your armor gets exposed, and if it gets exposed enough (like rebound control) it wrecks your confidence.

Cory lost his fastball and he's now worthless. When Marty lost his fastball it wasn't a big deal because he knew how to *pitch*.

Marty could make a bad team play better in front of him, settle them down, and pick them up.

Cory is just a big question mark and that totally wrecks the psyche of an already fragile ****show in front of him.
Okay, that's fair. I would say a gun to my head, the 2014 Marty was probably better than the current Cory. Everybody was talking about Cory's 16 game run of .920% goaltending to finish out the season last year, but even a 41.5 year old Marty had like a .930%+ month in 2013-2014 and a couple shutouts in a row.

This is the first offseason the buyout Cory talk could be legitimate. There was no way they were ever going to do it with three or four years left on the deal. With two maybe although even then it could be problematic if you start getting a bunch of high salaried players by years 3 and 4 of the buyout.

Oh boy what a game :/

I think this team is cursed, or at least Cory Schneider is cursed. I think the universe is punishing us for having Marty all those years, and all that success in the 90s and early 00s.

Can't be punishing us too bad if the "punishment" was getting Nico and Hughes, though....

And forgo $12 million? Maybe he can go back to the doctor and say his hip still hurts and go on LTIR. That way he gets his money, and we can trade him to Ottawa or the Leafs along with a 4th rounder for a 7th rounder back.

You all realise that we can't buy Schneider out until June 15th or 48 hours after the conclusion of the SCF, right?
Unfortunately.

But if Blackwood can ever stop having all these clunkers, it would help ease the burden of having to even see Cory more than every so often.

With how badly he's played (especially since the calendar struck 2018 and even worse since his 18-19 season started), I don't think it will be much work in trying to convince the league that his injuries are bad enough that he can't perform.

It's been a long time since we've seen a goalie end up on the LTIR for the remaining years on their deal.

Who am I forgetting? I can't remember the last. Cristobal Heut was loaned to the Euro leagues by the Blackhawks, after being so bad, but that wasn't LTIR.

I'm glad they spent a good amount of time on this game on the NHL Network. They showed PK and Halls comments and pretty much called Hall out and said yeah of course they're booing with the way we've thrown away games. They gave PK props for taking ownership of his poor play.

They listed all the blown lead games at home and talked about coaching and not taking risks in certain game situations and stapling guys to the bench to send a message (Halls dumb turnover). Called him out for that one and mentioned he needs to be a leader out there lol.

Yes they gave PK props for basically saying he stunk but how many games is he going to say that until he DOESN'T stink?

This reminds me of Cory's excuses of "I have to play better" that never really result in him actually playing better.

Yeah PK didn't act like a jerk but he still is basically stealing money from the Devils right now with his poor play.

I was thinking maybe Bryzgolov since I remembered that he was horrible immediately after signing a huge deal with Philly, so I went and looked. They bought him out after two years of a nine year contract. Holy shit.

Sure he needs to play better. But when the entire team is playing poorly, I’d say the simplest way to get them to play better is to change the coach.

he wasn’t as bad as he tried to take credit for being

But until the entire team starts playing better (or rather we have an goaltender who can hold a f'n lead), his less-than-stellar play is going to continue to have a microscope over it as is everyone else's.

Now that said, he is being paid to be a TOP DEFENSEMAN and what we're seeing isn't what he is being advertised as.

DiPietro was also bought out with like a zillion years remaining, but both he and Bryzgalov were amnesty buyouts after the last CBA.

I can't think of a goalie that got LTIR'd with remaining term.

If we bought him out after last year, it would have been high priced and there haven't been many buyouts of players with 3 years left. Not including some of them amnesty buyouts when the last two CBA's were put in, which didn't count against the cap.

I think Yashin had like 5 or 6 years left on his deal when he got bought out. Former forum favorite Alex Semin (who a small but vocal sect always wanted signed here whenever he would become a UFA) was bought out with about 3 years left on his deal with Carolina. He then signed in Montreal for one year and didn't even last 20 games, if I'm remembering right, before he terminated his contract and left for the KHL.
