Around the Horn show really gets on my nerves. Even when they talk NHL playoffs, it's always so damn quick. It's like they hate hockey and are forced to talk about it. Even when the panel talks about hockey, it's so obvious they don't know what they're talking about and so obvious they are reading off the teleprompter, and still can't read it properly.
Today, show starts with NBA gm 6 preview. (9 min). Then NHL gm 1 OT.. they show 8 secs of highlights (just the OT goal).. a total of 2 min on NHL. Then they go to Sue Bird retiring (4 min of her).
Every topic today, even the last ones got more air time than NHL gm1 SCF.. Even women's softball got 4 min. of air time... It's so obvious they hate hockey and couldn't give a crap about it.
I'm starting to really hate that show.

These are still very promising numbers overall and when you include the really solid cable numbers from the playoffs so far I think this is a great sign for the rest of this TV deal. The reality is is that Colorado and Tampa aren’t major market draws like some of the other teams in the league. They are they the 13th and 16th largest TV markets in the country so neither are top 10. This is a much better matchup than a potential Edmonton-Tampa final, but a Rangers-Avalanche final would probably be averaging 5 million this series so far. Colorado as a state has a smallish population (and also Altitude sports which is the Avalanche’s RSN is in the middle of a contract dispute so a significant number of households in Colorado didn’t actually get Avalanche games which probably put a hit in the number of casual fan interst since for the entire regualr season a large portion if the population couldn’t watch) and outside of Tampa proper there isn’t a major interest in hockey, which equates to decent but not incredible ratings. ESPN has managed to bring up digital fan engagement of the NHL on their socials and if they continue to at least talk about the NHL on their dayside cable programming and make a fee alterations to their broadcast schedules (Sunday instead of Saturday ABC games, better matchups on their cable broadcasts) I think we see solid numbers for the duration of this contract2022:

I used the data from SPM (Stanley Cup Final Ratings History (1999-Present)) to show the numbers from last couple of finals just for fun
Multi-year highs for Games 2 and 3 of Cup Final (with cable caveat)
The decision to put every game of this year's Stanley Cup Final on broadcast television has already paid off in the ratings.www.sportsmediawatch.com
The decision to put every game of this year’s Stanley Cup Final on broadcast television has already paid off in the ratings.
Monday’s Avalanche-Lightning Stanley Cup Final Game 3 averaged a 2.2 rating and 4.10 million viewers on ABC, the largest audience for the third game of the Cup Final in 20 years (Red Wings-Hurricanes: 5.48M). Keep in mind it was just the second time Game 3 on broadcast television in the past 14.
Game 2 on Saturday averaged a 1.7 and 3.75 million, the largest audience for the second game of the Cup Final since the previous one on broadcast television — Blackhawks-Lightning on NBC immediately following American Pharoah’s Triple Crown-clinching Belmont Stakes run in 2015 (6.55M).
The first three games of the Cup Final rank as the most-watched NHL games since the league returned from hiatus nearly two years ago, each surpassing the previous high of 3.56 million for last year’s Game 5 clincher. Take out the past two years, and the first three games rank as the least-watched Cup Final games on broadcast television since Sharks-Penguins Game 1 in 2016 (4.08M).
This is the kicker though.continue to at least talk about the NHL on their dayside cable programming
The company he works for pays the NHL 420 million dollars a year for the A package. Turner Sports the B package. I am sure ESPN would not pay billions for something no one cares about. They probably should be a little more careful not to insult their bosses.
Max Kellerman's favorite sport is boxing. That guy making fun of a sport's popularity is the height of coincidental irony. The company he works for pays the NHL 420 million dollars a year for the A package. Turner Sports the B package. The NHL is gonna make 5.3 billion dollars this year, "not a major sport" my ass
PK is doing a great job! But kudos to ESPN and Stephen A and ESPN for actually bringing up the respect factor.
He should just retire now cause he is dreadful on the iceSubban makes a damn good analyst. Hopefully ESPN hires him on full time after retirement.
One thing I've always noticed with SCF/PO tv ratings is that Buffalo is near the top. Despite the team never making it.
Are those ratings Canadian influenced in someway?
Mag dog russo formerly of wfan in New York. I don't know why he is there these days to be honest. Doesn't seem like he fits into the young urban crowd shows like this aim at.Who's the white bloke in that first video? What a strong accent he has and not in a good way lol.

And actually the fact that Buffalo gets both CBC and ABC makes the TV ratings in Buffalo look worse than they actual are because Americans watching CBC are not counted. The same affect happens in Detroit. I know in Detroit that there are many people that watch HNIC broadcast on CBC over the American TV broadcast and I'm sure the same applies for Buffalo. No - While adjacent to Canada TV numbers for Buffalo are US households.
For the Final ABC can be seen by most cable viewers in Canada and CBC can be seen in some border cities

This series ratings wise seems comparable to 2016 Sharks-Pens series (at least the broadcast ratings are, the NBCSN ratings were obviously lower) so I expect around 5 million for game 5, with a boost of like 5.5-5.8 million if the Avs clinch with people tuning in to watch the end of the game
