Around the Horn show really gets on my nerves. Even when they talk NHL playoffs, it's always so damn quick. It's like they hate hockey and are forced to talk about it. Even when the panel talks about hockey, it's so obvious they don't know what they're talking about and so obvious they are reading off the teleprompter, and still can't read it properly.

Today, show starts with NBA gm 6 preview. (9 min). Then NHL gm 1 OT.. they show 8 secs of highlights (just the OT goal).. a total of 2 min on NHL. Then they go to Sue Bird retiring (4 min of her).

Every topic today, even the last ones got more air time than NHL gm1 SCF.. Even women's softball got 4 min. of air time... It's so obvious they hate hockey and couldn't give a crap about it.

I'm starting to really hate that show.

It was a pretty bad show to begin with. Not sure how people actually like that kind of stuff.

I used the data from SPM (Stanley Cup Final Ratings History (1999-Present)) to show the numbers from last couple of finals just for fun

The decision to put every game of this year’s Stanley Cup Final on broadcast television has already paid off in the ratings.

Monday’s Avalanche-Lightning Stanley Cup Final Game 3 averaged a 2.2 rating and 4.10 million viewers on ABC, the largest audience for the third game of the Cup Final in 20 years (Red Wings-Hurricanes: 5.48M). Keep in mind it was just the second time Game 3 on broadcast television in the past 14.

Game 2 on Saturday averaged a 1.7 and 3.75 million, the largest audience for the second game of the Cup Final since the previous one on broadcast television — Blackhawks-Lightning on NBC immediately following American Pharoah’s Triple Crown-clinching Belmont Stakes run in 2015 (6.55M).

The first three games of the Cup Final rank as the most-watched NHL games since the league returned from hiatus nearly two years ago, each surpassing the previous high of 3.56 million for last year’s Game 5 clincher. Take out the past two years, and the first three games rank as the least-watched Cup Final games on broadcast television since Sharks-Penguins Game 1 in 2016 (4.08M).

These are still very promising numbers overall and when you include the really solid cable numbers from the playoffs so far I think this is a great sign for the rest of this TV deal. The reality is is that Colorado and Tampa aren’t major market draws like some of the other teams in the league. They are they the 13th and 16th largest TV markets in the country so neither are top 10. This is a much better matchup than a potential Edmonton-Tampa final, but a Rangers-Avalanche final would probably be averaging 5 million this series so far. Colorado as a state has a smallish population (and also Altitude sports which is the Avalanche’s RSN is in the middle of a contract dispute so a significant number of households in Colorado didn’t actually get Avalanche games which probably put a hit in the number of casual fan interst since for the entire regualr season a large portion if the population couldn’t watch) and outside of Tampa proper there isn’t a major interest in hockey, which equates to decent but not incredible ratings. ESPN has managed to bring up digital fan engagement of the NHL on their socials and if they continue to at least talk about the NHL on their dayside cable programming and make a fee alterations to their broadcast schedules (Sunday instead of Saturday ABC games, better matchups on their cable broadcasts) I think we see solid numbers for the duration of this contract

This is the kicker though.

Yeah, being mentioned more on Around the Horn, PTI and marginally more on SportsCenter is great … but where ESPN makes their bread and butter is on the hot take shows.

If the NHL became regularly mentioned on First Take, I guarantee you the league would become more visible nationwide.

The same as if it were mentioned more on Get Up. Yeah, it’s not a hot take show, but people watch the clips when they’re posted to social media.

Game 3 was on Juneteenth in the U.S., a federal holiday since last year. However, not every state recognizes it yet, from what I've read.

Anyway, just saylng that the ABC hockey audience may have been dampened a bit because of that creating a 3-day weekend for some or many, plus Father's Day and summer weather.

It was a big travel extended weekend. Seems air traffic was a near record or record from the past two years. No, it wasn't a regular Monday viewing audience.

Then we have guys like JJ Reddick who kills it all for all of us. Today on This Just In, they were talking about Sir Charles on NHL on ABC yesterday, and then JJ says, First of all, no one really cares about hockey.. And then Max Kellerman starts laughing and then says, I've always said, there are only 3 major sports, not 4.. Hockey is not a sport. Everytime i tune in, Max is always bashing hockey. This guy really hates hockey..

But Jj's comment really made my blood boil. It drove me crazy when he said that. So i did the right thing.. I went on to his twitter account and sent him a DM calling him an idiot for saying that and ppl do care about hockey..
He has no right to say this. That really pissed me off. I gave it to him. I just hope i don't get banned by twitter for that cuz i was nasty to him.

Don't ever talk about my sport like that again JJ! Everyone loves hockey.

The company he works for pays the NHL 420 million dollars a year for the A package. Turner Sports the B package. I am sure ESPN would not pay billions for something no one cares about. They probably should be a little more careful not to insult their bosses.

Yeah I saw that - I think JJ Reddick got a bit butthurt that Barkley was insulting NBA players in favour for hockey. I mean it's just JJ Reddick and Max Kellerman. PK Subban was Get Up as a panellist. NHL will always have its detractors but the league has come along way despite their detractors which is overall good.

Max Kellerman's favorite sport is boxing. That guy making fun of a sport's popularity is the height of coincidental irony.

The NHL is gonna make 5.3 billion dollars this year, "not a major sport" my ass

It's funny because he said he got a lot of flack for saying that until this day. If it wasn't a major sport he wouldn't be facing the backlash he does.

Subban makes a damn good analyst. Hopefully ESPN hires him on full time after retirement.

One thing I've always noticed with SCF/PO tv ratings is that Buffalo is near the top. Despite the team never making it.

Are those ratings Canadian influenced in someway?

From the first time i saw PK here in MTL back in 2009, i knew he'd be massive in the media one day. The guy loves the camera so much and loves attention. He's funny and well spoken and very charismatic. Just like Tom Brady, PK will end up making way more after he's retired in broadcasting then his whole playing career combined.

The big question is, who will grab him first? I've always said HNIC will pay him whatever he wants to join the cast. He's canadian, from toronto, funny and ppl love him and he's knowledgeable. But now i am wondering if ESPN will grab him before CBC/Sportsnet. He'd be great in the US. A player of colour which would bring in lots of african americans to the game.

I always thought he'd be the future Don Cherry and have a Pk's corner (like coach's corner on CBC) he will bring in the viewers cuz he's so entertaining. What a future this guy has!! No way CBC will let him go..

Who's the white bloke in that first video? What a strong accent he has and not in a good way lol.
Mag dog russo formerly of wfan in New York. I don't know why he is there these days to be honest. Doesn't seem like he fits into the young urban crowd shows like this aim at.

No - While adjacent to Canada TV numbers for Buffalo are US households.

For the Final ABC can be seen by most cable viewers in Canada and CBC can be seen in some border cities

And actually the fact that Buffalo gets both CBC and ABC makes the TV ratings in Buffalo look worse than they actual are because Americans watching CBC are not counted. The same affect happens in Detroit. I know in Detroit that there are many people that watch HNIC broadcast on CBC over the American TV broadcast and I'm sure the same applies for Buffalo.

Nearly 4.6 million viewers for Game 4
This series ratings wise seems comparable to 2016 Sharks-Pens series (at least the broadcast ratings are, the NBCSN ratings were obviously lower) so I expect around 5 million for game 5, with a boost of like 5.5-5.8 million if the Avs clinch with people tuning in to watch the end of the game
