As a fan, the way the rights are carved out is frustrating, still don't understand what games are on ESPN plus v. not and if I'll be able to see my team play on any given night, however for the league I think this is a great start. Basically looks like being 4th fiddle on these networks is better than being the flagship content for NBC sports network.

Also ESPN will be covering the NHL more to the casual sports fans who watch Football, Baseball, Basketball. On NBC that coverage was non-existent so any amount of coverage is better.

Just the exposure and engagement from ESPN is for the better. Like seeing the ESPN and Sportscenter twitter accounts posting hockey highlights is a huge lift cause even the dummies posting “not a sport” on the post are still seeing and engaging with it.

Plus as you said ESPN talking about it more just makes the sport feel more important and that’s what was lacking with the NBC coverage is that nothing felt like an event. ESPN and especially TNT make me wanna watch every game

Stiff competition last night, numbers not bad. Starting next week the 10 pm games with AEW Dynamite as a lead in.

213,000 for the pregame is something you never saw on NBCSN

Ratings: TNF, NBA, NHL, NASCAR

Tuesday’s Islanders-Blackhawks NHL regular season game averaged 558,000 viewers on ESPN, up 157% from Sharks-Predators on NBCSN in 2019 (217K). On Wednesday night, TNT drew 542,000 for Bruins-Flyers and 395,000 for Blues-Golden Knights — up 27% and 128% respectively from the comparable 2019 doubleheader on NBCSN (Devils-Flyers: 428K; Kings-Canucks: 173K).
Of the six nationally televised NHL windows that can be compared to 2019, each has increased double-digits and four have increased triple-digits.

Yeah those comparable doubleheaders are some of the least comparable I have seen...Blues vs Golden Knights (two solid viewership) versus the Kings (which doesn't get very strong nums) that are against a Canadian team. I fully believe the numbers are up, but not in the triple digits.

The thing about facts is you dont have to believe them.

You can believe that 2 plus 2 equals 5, that, however doesnt change the fact it actually equals 4.

Is this just a US rating thread? Because this guy posts the TSN/SN numbers basically every day and last saturday were not good

And here we are with another night of no national hockey game. And since the Flyers don't play tonight, there's zero games for me to watch.

ya yesterday was your prototypical filler game for ESPN since there was nothing else on. Similar to what they used to do with the NHL back in the early 2000s on ESPN 2. Thinking that the TNT game which has the oilers and is at 10PM will be similar if not lower.

Very tough sports TV competition with World Series and NBA on TNT. It was still in the Top 50 which is good considering the number, shows that ESPN factor matters
At this point it's up to the NHL to aggressively market the product like the NBA did in the late 90s/2000s. There is no way broadcast partners should be your main marketing channel. I like that they are early adopters of mass streaming but now it's time to do more than the "grass roots" crap they have been doing the last two decades.

I'll be completely honest, I was expecting better numbers for the ESPN games. Maybe the switch from NBCSN to ESPN isn't as significant as I thought.
Why too early to understand the ESPN effect. Being on ESPN this year at least people know it's on rather than in past years during this time. Probably have to gauge in a couple of years what the effect looks like.

It's actually their first show below 1m in a some weeks and they're staying on wednesdays but on TBS starting january

Right but moving them from TNT to TBS might seems like a downgrade to AEW fans. I think TBS is available in more households.
