A window that will have shrunk by at least one season because no upgrades today = no chance at winning the Cup this season.
I agree that even a top four defenseman and a faceoff specialist/pk competent center are not added then this team will not get out of the 2nd round of the playoffs. It does not need to be Karlsson or McDonough but it has to be someone that can play with Hedman so our top 4 can be solidified!

We need to take a step back and ponder this: EK seems to be available and Tampa is in a good position to get him. That is wild. We've been looking for a puck moving RHD forever. The best I'm the world became available and is sitting on a silver platter at the deadline.

Do you pass up this once in a career opportunity?

Let's say the lynch pin is Serge. This is a guy we've had for less than a year and traded a wild card Drouin for. Serge's ultimate potential is EK, but won't reach that level for a few year. Same with Foote. These two guys won't be at their best when the current team is at their best.

It's crazy to think we would pass up on EK for Mikhal Sergachev and Cal Foote.

Idk...after I slept on it, this opportunity only comes maybe once a career for a GM - maybe never.

If we don't make a move today, and a top competitor does... I hope Yzerman ran a strong counter-intel operation and ran up the prices to make those other teams bankrupt their futures for their trades today, thus ensuring our increased chances at something like a 3 cups in 7 year type of run, starting next year.
If we can't win the battle, we can still win the war.

What would Hedman return? That is what the Sens want. A couple late firsts, some CHL prospects, etc ... it won’t be enough. I get the Sens fans ... for Hedman I’d want your best roster winger, your best roster young NHL player, +, +, +. It’s going to be too expensive to get Karlsson.

We also get back our best defensive forward here in next 10 days. So addition of Palat. A faceoff winning 4th line center that can play with Kunitz. And a RHD equivalent to Coburn is probably what we are looking at.

Drama much? The goal of the organization is not to win the Stanley Cup. The whole organization has said ... “ the goal is to make the playoffs...once you are in the playoffs anything can happen”. Once you are in the playoffs your absolute goal is to win the cup. But Yzerman won’t sell the future goal which is to make the playoffs every year by going all in one year.

A couple of modest trades that give us some improvement in key areas - fine. Going all in for Karlsson or McDonaugh ... by trading the farm - Yzerman won’t do it.

Does trading Sergachev cripple the franchise's future?

I wonder what he'd cost. Johnson and Green together would be far less expensive than one of the big guns.

Exactly. You just don't pass this chance up. If it costs Serge, so be it. I have faith in our scouting team anyways. It's Erik f***ing Karlsson guys.

You do realize Hedman is signed to a very friendly deal for 7 years after this, isn't playing like crap and until this year hasn't had any leg injuries. It's not that comparable.

Disrespect train in full effect. Guy on Tradecentre said he has PIT, BOS and TOR all ahead of TB in odds of getting to a cup. Other guy said TOR would be lucky to play TB in playoffs over BOS.

They're really proud of that win against us.

Here's the thing though, we have Sergachev the next two years at around 1mil with bonuses, then 2 or 3 more years at probably 3-4mil before he gets paid. We can keep depth players like Gourde, Johnson and Killorn. We bring in Karlsson we start trading everything not nailed down, we lose quality depth and have guys like Erne and Conacher trying to be top 9 forwards.

TSN have Tyson Barrie listed under trade bait, could he be someone that Yzerman could lowkey look into if non of the big names happens? I don't know what Colorado would want for him though and I haven't seen him play but he can't be worse than Sustr if nothing else.

The second part, as of right now, is legit; Boston is better built than we are.

Still think that ranking Toronto over Tampa, however, is total audience pandering.

It's not disrespect at all. We haven't played well. 13-10 since Jan 1st. Those three teams made moves to get better. We're struggling and haven't done anything to shore up a not so great defense.

he would be a very good addition as a puck-moving defense-man... not so much in the defensive help that we need though. Still think the best cost/quality option is McDonagh.

Except Serge is a liability a lot of games. That's the thing. EK is a huge upgrade this year and for the foreeable future.

Also, someone like Johnson and Killorn might be gone regardless.

We need a big upgrade on D. Whether that's EK or someone else, that' gonna cost a good chunk of cash along with the Kuch and Vasi increase. TyJo and Killorn were probably in the block anyway.

Hm. I guess I just don't buy that TB is so bad considering they've slid and still manage to be #1.

Maybe I'm too optimistic for this group.

Not really. You even discuss trading for non-EK D's and that's fine. I was discussing in the context of maintaining the status quo. No trades = no realistic Cup chance. Think almost all of us feel that way.

Have you watched Karlsson try to play defense this year? Not much difference than him and Sergachev. Sergachev will also be improving those years, the best Karlsson may be in the past. We may still trade Johnson and Killorn but in a hockey trade, not a cap dump one like Chicago had to do with some of their players.
