Why does the NHL owe Vegas? I've seen you post this a few times and I assume it's in reference to the playoffs last year. It was a shit call, but for the love of God an NHL team should not give up that many goals on a PP.

Vegas should be happy that the expansion draft was set up to give them a competitive team out of the gate. Look at Ottawa, Anaheim, Florida, Columbus and Minnesota's inaugural rosters. Plus they didn't have extra 1st rounders from teams making side deals.

I get why the league would push for Vegas and Toronto. I don't like it, but I understand. There's obviously some big money involved.
I believe it’s something along the lines of the betting technology that Vegas casinos use (the maloof family who owns some casino property and partially the golden knights) is being configured for use in the NHL. I’m not sure what the details are but I’m guessing the nhl got a very “favorable deal” back then and is now giving Vegas a “favorable deal” back.

I wonder if the Oilers will hold camp in Bakersfield or something like that so players do not have to quarantine. Especially if the games are going to be in Vegas, get the players acclimatized to playing in a hair dryer.

What happened to the Western Teams will play in an Eastern hub and Eastern Teams in a Western hub concept?

I don't know, just commenting on JTS saying a Vancouver reporter says it'll be western teams in Vegas. I have heard from John Shannon that they would prefer eastern teams in the eastern time zone (Toronto) and western teams in the western time zone for television and the players being used to playing in their respective time zones. Home teams would have to quarantine in the same hotel structure so they cant go to their real homes and families. Either way the league does appear to be setting up a Toronto base for the east I think. Makes sense, its where the broadcasters are and the NHL loves to coddle their biggest fanbase of whining babies.

Apparently the owner of the Vegas team whose name escapes me right now lost his f***ing mind over the call and the lost revenue. Personally I think they should have been able to kill a 5 minute penalty and not allow 4 goals in 5 minutes but that is just me lol. Anyway, that is what the league "owes" Vegas, which again is just my opinion but Bettman seems to have a track record of this sort of thing, or maybe its just perception.

Either way, you are 100% correct and the league owes them nothing but I can see this being a silent "repayment of a debt".

The golf course would be secured for only the players and I assume quarantined staff to use. Edmonton's bid also involved a outdoor movie theater. I'm sure they will have other outdoor options but they will all be inside of their bubble.

.... are you okay?

Was that ever proposed?

Bettman, Daly field questions on Return To Play Plan; '97 State of the Franchise photos - LA Kings Insider

Q. Just wondering on the idea that when the hub cities are picked that the franchise that is in that city will be allowed to have all of its games in that city or if there is any inertia for a competitive balance argument to be made that they wouldn’t be allowed to?

BILL DALY: Obviously we’ve talked about that, and actually I’ve heard arguments on both sides of that equation. I can’t tell you that that has been finally decided, but particularly given the fact that there’s no fans in the stands, we certainly see some merit to moving the club to a different market so that any perceived advantages associated with being in a home market are eliminated.

Hmm, speaking of owing a team for a crappy call...

I agree with Daly that it would be smart not to have a hub city be a home arena of one of the teams playing. So, either have it in a city that doesn't have a playoff team, or do a conference switch.

I don't think there is a real 'home ice advantage' but I just know that if the 'home' team does remarkably well, it will give fuel to those who want to discredit the whole thing, regardless if the reasoning is sound or not. And who knows? There might be a psychological advantage.

As for the time zone thing, I don't get it. Like for instance, if Edmonton hosts the Eastern conference, just schedule the game times for the Eastern time zone...

It's not like we are worrying about fans in the stands, and scheduling games to coincide with local schedules of when people will be off work or go to bed. And if there are some fans going to games by that time, then maybe there really will be a home team advantage that is unfair.

That's an interesting read. While it makes sense given the lost revenue from the season that the cap/escrow numbers as they relate to players' salaries are a very high priority item for NHL/NHLPA negotiations right now, Brooks is the first journalist I've read who's put this much detail into explaining where things are at.

Guess the players will be happy. Would be my last choice if I was a player, but so be it. Hopefully the league doesn't regret it.
I'd really question why the players would like it. Will we see pics of players partying in Vegas, tossing aside covid protocols? In terms of weather, Edmonton is actually much better. I don't care where you grew up. Alberta summers are much nicer than in Nevada. Even people in those states run towards the AC

I think the league was motivated by market forces. I totally support that btw. Pick a smart venue for the good of the business.

I've heard that mentioned before, and find it interesting. As a fan, the location of the hub makes no difference to me. I just want to watch hockey. Will someone actually decide to watch or not because it is being held in Vegas vs Edmonton?
