At least Jones won’t be live-streaming himself taking a dump in the spacious press room in Rogers. (For those that don’t know he tweeted about how big the new shitter stalls are and how happy he was that he could take a crap up there whereas he couldn’t do a bowel dump in Rexall. I slept better that night knowing that.....)

Read this in the middle of pinching a loaf

Baffling how they are being considered. People that went/go weren't following distancing and stuff. Watching the video shows this. Plus its not like these are Vegas residents. Do they really think that the players are gonna stay in their rooms too?

The players won't have to stay in their rooms. they will likely have a whole bunch of activities set up in their "bubble". Just like how Edmonton pitched including a golf course in their "bubble".

To be honest what the hell is there even to do in Vegas in August if you can't be in a casino or club? Which they can't seriously allow because it would put the players in contact with way too many people. Or *ahem* a strip club, lol.

A golf course in Vegas in August is going to be so hot that it's not comfortable to be outside at all. Being outdoors in Vegas in the summer is like opening an oven and stepping inside.

There's no beach. They could have a pool I guess, but Edmonton is warm enough in August to have an outdoor pool area as well. I'm sure they probably could set up an outdoor pool somewhere in the Ice District for players to enjoy.

The questions I have is when it comes to the 20/21 season, do we play a full 82 games and when would it start?

They want to, but I don't think it's realistic. Right now, the current schedule is pointing to a January start. Playing a full alotment of games pushes playoff startup until probably at least late June with the cup awarded in August, which would again likely push startup of 2022-23 until at least November. The players would be so burnt out by the time 2023 cup gets awarded in July of that year, that it'll be too much.

At minimum if they want to spread this delay over a few seasons, they probably need to at least trim 6-10 games off each teams schedule if not more.

I say use this opportunity to recreate the NHL based on a 76 game schedule going forward and skip all-star games for a couple years. Assuming 32 teams, this would mean 4 games against teams in your in division per year and 2 games against teams out of division. For year 1 with 31 teams, make up the extra 2-4 games within your own division based on geographical proximity to to minimize travel burden.

This would buy them about 2-3 weeks per year, and then shorten the off-season by about 4-6 weeks per year until you get back to an October start then you stretch the season back for timelines with the lower amount of games to allow more rest in season or use that extra time to build in a preliminary round for teams 17-20 or 17-24.

Using this methodology the 2022 cup would be awarded early July 2022, assuming a January 1st start to next season and then they could be back to normal for October 2023.

The game would be better for it in the long run.

Id be surprised if they didn't have some sort of casino setup for the players. Especially in Vegas. Probably have an outdoor pool reserved for them too.

Obviously they can't wonder the strip and hit up the clubs.

I love hockey. But an 82 game regular season seems a bit rough. 76 would probably be a nice number for viewership and help reduce injuries.

The chance of that happening... zero.

41 home games versus 38 in terms of revenue is a no go for most if not all owners. There is a bigger chance of the owners pushing for make up games for missing out on revenue for this year's missed games and fan less post season.

When things get finally sorted out the only change I could see permanently made is adding the preliminary round to the playoffs. I could see owners pushing hard for that because even 1 Extra post season game means increased revenue.

Which begs the question, if they can't hit the strip and the clubs, why does it make more sense to be there than anywhere else. Weather is certainly not an advantage. Accomodations of course would be bountiful, but quite a few other cities have the required accommodation capacity.

100% agreed under normal circumstances, this never would have happened, that's why I'm hoping they test drive it in these extreme circumstances that need some time contraction and find that it's worth it.

Increasing your odds significantly at having a couple home playoff games at the expense of three regular season home games may be enough incentive to make it happen. Nevermind the fact that it would keep teams in the fight much deeper into the year increasing the value of those February and March games that often are worthless to teams in the bottom ten.

If they try to proceed with 82 game schedules without all-star games while shortening the off season by 5 weeks would buy them about 40 days per season.

Following that model through, using the January 1st start date for next season, playoffs would start around Canada Day, with the cup awarded around Labour Day. 11 week off season instead of the usual sixteen week, 2021-22 starts late November and playoffs can't start until late May with the cup being awarded end of July.

This could possibly allow a mid-October start that could have them back on track by playoffs without an all-star break. But don't forget the players are still fighting to get into the Olympics for 2022.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out for sure.

Another thought with these scenarios is the requirement to host playoff games under normal circumstances through July and August for the next couple years. Do we really think the southern states can keep the ice surface safe to play on when there are actual crowds and exposure to the outdoor elements.

In the hub city format, the buildings will be basically locked down without many people in them and the league can send as many resources to these hubs to keep the ice safe. Imagine doing this in Arizona in July when the average high is 41 degrees Celsius without those resources.

My guess is the owners will do everything possible so that the 2021-22 season starts on time with a full 82-game schedule. No reason to run a series of shortened seasons.

They may want that but the players need to agree and anything that puts off-season down towards 2 months or less will be non-starter.

If they insist on a full 82 game season and playoffs for 2020-21 and don't start until January 1st, starting 2021-22 on time would only be possible if the players had about four weeks for an off-season without crazy schedule compression. In those four weeks, they'd need to complete an expansion draft, amateur draft, free agency, and training camp. That's just not possible.

So they either have to look at two weird seasons or a single season with less than 70 (likely less than 60) games.

Well imo if they can do 40 or 50, they can do 82. No difference.

I would think the issue is how big a crowd you can have. If delaying a few months means that they get to have full crowds from the start, that's huge. And if they delay things and there's no difference, well, there's no difference.

Delaying the 2020-21 season a few months?

They will have to if they are going to start this tournament in July.

Logistically it seems like a solid bid. The entertainment provided to the players is going to be pretty similar wherever they go. Having a hub in Vegas!!! Is a better marketing campaign than broadcasting from Edmonton. Just like the NBA playing at Disney will get my attention more than if they played in Utah.

I don't get why this would be that hard to do. 3 out of those 4 things wouldn't effect a players time off. Might suck for management, but I really don't care.

At the end of the day if all these people want to be making the money they are making, they are going to have to make some sacrifices. A lot of people seem to think lets just cancel things and move on, we will be okay. Not exactly how it works. The leagues across North America need to play as much as they can. They can't afford to mess with advertisement and tv deals. Players don't like escrow right now, wait til they see what it would be if they just start shortening everything,

If the break was as short as four weeks, any team that went deep into the playoffs would turn into an injury nightmare the following season, which would be the major hurdle.

Understood most teams would have more than 2 months even in that scenario, but off season is where players tend to their injuries, get a small break and then rebuild their bodies to maintain the strength endure a grinding 82 + up to 28 game season. If you cut that period too short, they'd be starting with compromised body health and the injuries would be record breaking, some of which could even be career ending types.

That's why the players wouldn't agree. It isn't a 16 -24 week vacation for them. It's a couple weeks of break followed by a few months of extreme preparation for the next season.

The marketing idea wasn't one I considered so you may be right on that, but I don't think that impacts the viewership of the games as much as it helps market that city. I'll watch the NBA, but not because of it being at Disney, because I want to see how the Raptors do defending their title.
