The NHL has its blueprint - the 2013 season

But the biggest problem they face is

Lots of discussion points. Appear to have agreement that 7 teams not in bubbles will get extra training camp time. Nothing in MOU about salary reductions is shortened season played; expect further talks as players believe one game = full season $$ less 20% escrow and 10% deferment.

And some GMs would like prospects playing in AHL as much as possible, even though Howson thinks they'll be in sync with NHL schedule.

If MSG can't even host a dog show in February you can fugetaboutit hockey

Westminster Dog Show Will Move Outdoors in 2021

The event, long a fixture at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, will move to Lyndhurst, a riverside estate in Westchester County, in June to comply with pandemic restrictions.

The change to a warm-weather, outdoor show was necessary, organizers said, to ensure the event could take place and still comply with the “ever-changing government restrictions” brought on by the health crisis.

Totally off-topic but imagine an outdoor dog-show and then this squirrel goes running thru. Major LOL.

Some pretty big news for potential cross-border play next season:

Travellers entering Canada by land or air through Alberta will soon have the option of being tested for COVID-19 at the border in a move that could shorten quarantine times— in a pilot project that's the first of its kind in Canada, Premier Jason Kenney announced Thursday.

The mandatory quarantine period for returning international travellers will be maintained for now. But the 14-day day self-isolation period could be shortened to about 48 hours if a traveller receives a negative COVID-19 test result.

Well there goes the dream of a Canadian division..

Not really - NHL has too many cases of a team playing say in Boston on Thursday and then Montreal on a Saturday. When they do come back it will be a compressed schedule so....

I think it could work. Yes teams would have to quarantine for 48 hours coming into Canada but they could do a swing where they play the night before they travel then play all 4 Western teams or all 3 Eastern teams in quick succession. Which would make sense for contact tracing as well.

Makes it easier for the NHL to bring fans back into the stands as a vaccine allows things to open up a little. Would likely have to start with mostly empty buildings but by the playoffs could be near full capacity.

I think that's unlikely given how much work they put into finishing this last season. Possible they use that as a threat to extract more concessions from the players though!

Wouldn't be a good look to be the only NA pro league that cancels the season and would likely harm long term relationships with broadcasters and sponsors at a time when the US broadcast rights contract is coming up for renewal.

I couldn't agree with you more, the NHL will have a 2020/21 season, to much to lose if they don't, the NHL is looking at the big picture, cancelling the season is not an option for the NHL or any other major sports league.

6.5 million from NBC
10.6 million from Rogers
21 million from Seattle - plus each market has local media deals (USD amounts)

Without fans there is no revenue from tickets, parking, concessions - merchandise will be down.

For the weaker teams - no revenue sharing as there isn't any.

It is pretty much a given that until there is a vaccine most local governments will not allow gatherings inside.

Things are looking grim.

Things could be worse, I think with the proper plan in place the NHL will be able to have a season, you just need to be flexible. I dont see the NHL cancelling their season, thats my opinion, but we'll see what happens. Things could change a lot in the right direction in the States on November 3rd.

Maybe not. AHL call ups would have to be 3 days in advance of need (for that 48 hour quarantine). If guy goes down with injury today, it would be three days before replacement could be in a game for you; teams might have to skate short.

There is still negotiation ongoing for international travelers to be tested in advance and have that reported to arrival country to eliminate any quarantine. And the NHL could negotiate something with Canada (federal) and provinces.

If teams have to go through that 48 hour quarantine, it might be they need 3 days travel/wait between last game played and first Canada road game (and do some/all in one sweep).

Lots unknown.

I think there are workarounds though for the injury call ups. The NHL could allow American teams to bring some AHL players with them when they travel to Canada for instance, and /or give teams flexibility to dress less than 20 players in an emergency situation.

There is NO chance the NHL can have a 82 game season for 2020-21

So negotiations between the NHL and NHLPA will be tense but for the first time in NHL history, the owners are feeling the same pain as the players. However, owners can look ahead a few years - players don't have that option.

No owner has been hit harder by this than Jeremy Jacobs as his business was designed on continuous cash flow via concessions and Delaware North was hammered worldwide. DN also invested heavily in expansion around TD Garden that a year ago seemed like a huge win - today it looks like a disaster.

Interesting that NBA wants to start earlier than NHL, @Fenway seems like you are correct, both NBA and NHL want their seasons to end before Olympics

I'd argue that most business are designed around a continuous cash flow, with season fluctuations. Hard to pick who got hit worse but Alex Meruelo has taken a major blast. All his casinos in Reno and Vegas are losing tons of money, his LA radio stations have flatlined ad revenue, his sushi supply co is facing bankruptcy, and his houses in Miami, NY, and Spain have all lost value. Nothing on the wire about his bank, realty and construction co are doing but lots of business with major win last year are getting crushed by covid. Chap 11s are popping out like weeds including - sob! - Ruby T's.

Canada is being silly by not allowing sports team to enter. Give me a break. If you live in the US and have a job in Canada or vice versa, you are allowed to cross the border and go to your job right now. It's not like if the Kings visit Montreal, that the world is going to end and the Kings are going to infect everyone. This is beyond stupid.
