High scoring season for Caps players put to shame; Caps miss out on Playoffs again

130111162715-alex-ovechkin-2-single-image-cut.jpg

Alex Ovechkin wins his 5th Rocket Richard and 2nd straight after scoring 51 goals this season.

Many players had good seasons, including a stellar year from our top line but they, Ovechkin specifically could score, but not that Clutch goal when it mattered late in the season. No calling out of Ovechkin, yet. It's just very, very disappointing.

Michal Neuvirth was solid in net even though not playing as much as we wanted him to as he finished 2nd in GAA and 2nd in SV%. Maybe a regrettable decision letting Holtby play as much as he did? I don't know. Alot of fingers are being pointed. Neuvirth was not one of them, as he was indeed a rock.

Nicklas Backstrom was and has been the perfect companion to Ovechkin, this year finishing 1st in assists, in the League. While the other player on that line, Mike Ribeiro also did good, finishing 8th in assists. And Ovechkin 'The Goal Scorer' finished 1st in Goals, winning his 5th career Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy, far more than anyone else. He also finished 8th in points.

Team Stats
Goals For Per Game - 12th, 2.70
Goals Against Per Game - 7th, 2.41
Power Play % - 9th, 17.7 %
Penalty Kill % - 8th, 84.8 %

With a 20-17-4 Home Record and 20-18-3 Away Record

Just seams like if it's not one thing, it's another. As last year we had trouble keeping the puck out of the net, but were scoring just fine, but that is flipped this year. Hopefully we get out of this funk. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

This Off-Season will have many big decisions made. You may very well see a new look Washington Capitals next season. Stay tuned!

@washcaps - Caps Re-Sign Head Coach Adam Oates to a 1-year deal. So both GM JaredCowenFan and Head Coach Adam Oates' contracts come up next year. Playoffs or fire, I am assuming.

Solid Haul at the 2013 Draft

Adam_Erne_-Steve_Deschenes-_0613_640.png

Adam Erne was the highest-ranked right winger at the 2013 draft, and was selected by the Ducks.

The Anaheim Ducks were slated to pick 16th overall, but they did not. Jay Feaster of the Calgary Flames once again proved that he should not be an NHL GM, making another trade that looks like it falls in the favor of the other team. Or you can look at it this way: rookie GM Juha Peltonen is a genius for fleecing him. Either way you look at it, the Ducks came out on top in this trade. The Flames owned the 8th overall pick, but traded it to Anaheim along with two players, in exchange for a package that included the Ducks' 16th overall pick. Full details of the trade are below.

:flames

C Andrew Cogliano (79, 26 years old, 3.5 yellow stars)
G Igor Bobkov (71, 22 years old, 3.5 yellow stars)
16th overall pick
2014 3rd Round Pick

:ducks2

8th overall pick
RW Ben Hanowski (74, 22 years old, 3.5 yellow stars)
G Joey MacDonald (75, 34 years old)

And with that pick, the Ducks selected Adam Erne from the Quebec Remparts. Erne was the highest-ranked right winger in the draft, and the best skater available at their pick. Two very good goaltenders were still available when the Ducks picked, but they didn't feel the need to select one as they already have 19 year old John Gibson, who projects to be a starting netminder in a few years. Erne is more of a grinder-type player, but has top-six potential that he seems very likely to reach. He hits hard and has a great scoring touch. He is a safe bet to be a second line forward and could possibly be a first liner. There were rumors that Ducks management wanted to draft defenseman Ryan Pulock, who went 7th overall, but they are very content with Erne.

Anaheim's 2013 Draft Picks
# | Player | Position | Overall | Age | Potential | Country
8|Adam Erne|Right Wing|66 TWF|18|4 Yellow|America
72|Rasmus Kulmala|Center|55 PLY|19|3.5 Yellow|Finland
76|Chris Marchese|Left Wing|56 TWF|19|3.5 Yellow|Canada
106|Brenden Fiebelkorn|Goaltender|49 HYB|19|3.5 Yellow|Canada
136|Brett Hester|Left Wing|52 TWF|19|3.5 Yellow|Canada
166|Elias Lindholm|Center|59 PLY|18|2.5 Yellow|Sweden
196|Carl Gelinas|Left Wing|59 SNP|21|2.5 Yellow|Canada

Also, here are the top ten selections from the draft:

Team | # | Player | Position | Overall | Age | Potential | Country
Philadelphia|1|Seth Jones|Defense|78 TWD|18|4.5 Green|America
Los Angeles|2|Nathan MacKinnon|Center|62 PLY|17|4.5 Green|Canada
Winnipeg|3|Jonathan Drouin|Left Wing|60 SNP|18|4.5 Yellow|Canada
Tampa Bay|4|Sean Monahan|Center|63 TWF|18|4.5 Yellow|Canada
Columbus|5|Anthony Mantha|Left Wing|67 PWF|18|4.5 Yellow|Canada
Phoenix|6|Hunter Shinkaruk|Left Wing|61 PLY|18|4.5 Yellow|Canada
Detroit|7|Ryan Pulock|Defense|59 OFD|18|4.5 Yellow|Canada
Anaheim|8|Adam Erne|Right Wing|66 TWF|18|4 Yellow|America
Florida|9|Norm Dalton|Goaltender|63 STD|18|4.5 Yellow|America
Washington|10|Matt Hewitt|Goaltender|71 HYB|20|4.5 Yellow|Canada

seth-jones.jpg

Seth Jones was selected first overall by the Philadelphia Flyers. He will be a perfect fit in the City of Brotherly Love due to the team's need of defense.

After a failed first attempt with my created team and a mix up on the rosters, I decided to make one of my favorite team, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Obviously expect much different results, but looking forward to how well the prospects develop. Couple of things: Turned injuries off, they are too annoying when trying to sim. Also turned off waivers, so nothing ridiculous happens.

NEW GM IN TOWN

After 3 years of playoff dissapointments, Ray Shero has been relieved of his duties. GM Hydro will step in place and will be expected to start winning cups with the elite talent in his organization. Let's jump right into this, shall we?

@StapeNewsday Islanders finish the preseason 2-1-1. The strategy looks decidedly different this year with so much roster turnover. Coach Pooky looks to have dialed up the offense a bit more this season, compared to last season's trap-and-turtle.

Thanks - I'm actually tracking everybody who ever played for the Islanders during my dynasty, so I can sort of have a visual of who was on the team when, how my prospects progress from year to year, etc. It'll eventually be really big :) Blank OVRs are years the player didn't play for NYI. It's sortable so I can see who my best players were year-to-year, or who my top prospects are, etc.

Ducks Announce Opening Night Roster

raymond.jpg

Speedster Mason Raymond will join the Ducks this year. He was inked to a three year contract.

Bryan Allen, Teemu Selanne, and Radek Dvorak all retired this offseason, leaving some holes in the Ducks' roster. Many people thought Saku Koivu would hang up his skates, and didn't expect Bryan Allen to, but the opposite was true. Two free agents were signed to fill the roles of Allen and Selanne, whereas Dvorak's spot will be filled by Kyle Palmieri. Palmieri played most of last season, but was scratched when Alex Steen was brought in at the trade deadline. The two free agent signings where veteran defender Andrew Ference, and former Canucks winger Mason Raymond. Raymond has shown flashes of brilliance but has struggled recently with the Canucks. Anaheim is hoping he can return to the second-line form that he showed in 2010.

A few contract extensions were given out to Ducks players as well. They are as follows:

Anaheim Ducks 2013-14 Starting Roster

Bobby Ryan (86) - Ryan Getzlaf (88, C) - Corey Perry (88, A)
Alexander Steen (83) - Saku Koivu (80) - Mason Raymond (80)
Matt Beleskey (82) - Matthew Lombardi (81) - Nick Bonino (80)
Daniel Winnik (77) - David Steckel (76) - Kyle Palmieri (77)

Andrew Ference (83) - Cam Fowler (79)
Toni Lydman (81) - Sheldon Souray (80)

Jonas Hiller (83) - Joey MacDonald (75)

This year could go either way - the Ducks' defense has improved, and their offense remains similar to last year. However, they did only make the playoffs by one point last season. Most people think things could go either fairly well this year, or horribly wrong.

This year could go either way - the Ducks' defense has improved, and their offense remains similar to last year. However, they did only make the playoffs by one point last season. Most people think things could go either fairly well this year, or horribly wrong.

Pft fire Bylsma from the Pittsburgh 'Country Club' Penguins? No way! :D

edit:

@penguins: Crosby lone penguin selected for All-star game

@penguins: The Penguins have traded C Jussi Jokinen to LA for D Robert Scuderi

@penguins: Trade with the bruins. Details to come. Includes Douglas Murray, Boston 1st Rounder

@penguins: Pit receive LW J. Florek, LW J. Knight, Boston 2013 1st Round Pick for LW Dustin Jeffrey, D Douglas Murray. Pens removing unnecessary cap hits

@penguins: #pens finish with a 51-27-4 record, for 106 points. New Jersey finished with 109, so we will get the 4th seed and play the 5th seed New York Rangers. Full season recap tomorrow! #pens

@StapeNewsday Islanders might be the hottest team in the league right now. A December surge puts them at 23-17-1 going into the new year.

@TSNBobMcKenzie Martin St. Louis traded for the second time in two years, from Minnesota to San Jose. Minnesota receives Craig Hottot and San Jose's first round pick.

So pleased to find other people who care as much as I do about their dynasties xD Do you guys sim all of your games or play most of them?

I sim every game. Playing each one would take too long for me and I would probably go 82-0 against the CPU anyway.

See I wanted to make sure, because I was going to post my dynasty up here, but I play most of the games, and even on all-star difficulty I end up with six straight cups and 55+ wins. So I should make a new one, sim more, and then post it... xD
