Eagles 2013 Season Review

An embarrassing season finally reaches its end, and the Halifax Eagles couldn't be happier.

Finishing the year with a lowly 28-46-8 record, the Eagles' 64 points will guarantee them the first overall pick at this year's draft, barring another team winning the lottery.

Eagles 2013 Draft Recap

Thanks to a surprising lottery win, the Anaheim Ducks leap-frogged the Eagles to claim first overall at the 2013 NHL Draft. But the Eagles, anxiously wanting the player they had their sights set on, made the Ducks an offer they couldn't refuse. The Eagles sent their own 1st round pick (2nd overall) and Dallas's 2nd round pick (52nd overall) to the Ducks in exchange for the prized 1st overall pick.

"With the first overall pick... the Halifax Eagles are extremely excited to select, from the Halifax Mooseheads, Nathan MacKinnon."

MacKinnon will join an already-impressive cast of Eagles prospects, and will likely surpass them as the top prospect in the organization. MacKinnon, a playmaking centerman, is expected to make an immediate impact to the franchise's fortune.

"With the twenty ninth overall pick... the Halifax Eagles are proud to select, from the Mississauga Steelheads, Semyon Babintsev."

Babintsev is a Russian sniper and is expected to develop into a top line scorer. His defensive awareness is lacking, but the Eagles expect that can be taught to him when he graduates to the major leagues.

Calgary, AB - The offseason was long, but it's time for a new season, and new excitement after a quick retool by GM Chibi Pooky resulted in two consecutive second-round exits. Let's summarize what Pooky did over the summer:

Firstly we'd like to congratulate our AHL Club, the Albany Devils on winning the Calder Cup! They made an almost impossible comeback in round 3 coming back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Binghamton Sens in 7, and then dealt with the Houston Aeroes in 7 to get the Calder Cup! Our 1st in History. Mattias Tedenby was our leading goal scorer with 20 points (4 goals, 16 assists) in the 24 games we played. But the MVP was Goalie Jeff Frazee. He finished with a record of 16-6-2 with a 1.81 GAA and a .929 SV%, with 4 shutouts. We're proud of the boys!

Devils move up in Draft and select #2 and #6

The Devils selected Defenceman Seth Jones 2nd Overall.

In a shocking 2013 Draft, the New Jersey Devils, the hosts of this years Drafts made 2 splashes! The Devils were just supposed to Draft 21st Overall but they moved up, picking up 2 Top 10 picks! The Draft started out with Gary Bettmen welcoming and thanking the City of Newark and the Staff here at the Prudential Center and then called up the Dallas Stars for the 1st Pick, they selected Nathan Mackinnon(Who the Devils wanted, he was listed at #2 in the Scouting report, when I last checked). And then the Phoenix Coyotes were supposed to select at #2 but Gary Bettman made an announcement: "We have a Trade to announce. The NEW JERSEY DEVILS trade AHL'er Eric Gelinas, there 1st round pick (21st Overall) and there 2nd round pick (51st Overall) to the Coyotes for AHL'er Matt Clackson and the 2nd Overall pick." The Crowd just absolutely erupted in excitement, just trying to piece together was had just happend. GM JaredCowenFan then walked up to the Podium and said.. "Hello everyone, thank you for all the support this year, throughout the season and Playoffs. I am proud to select from the Portland Winterhawks, Defenceman, Seth Jones!!!" The Crowd "OOO'ED and AAA'ED". The Devils just picked up a Franchise Defenceman, everyone was in amazement. Then a few picks later at #6 Gary Bettman said "We have another Trade to announce. The NEW JERSEY DEVILS trade Prospect Maxime Clermont, there 7th round pick in this years draft, there 2015 2nd round pick and 2015 7th round pick to the Winnipeg Jets for AHL'er Mark Dekenech and there 1st Round Pick (6th Overall)." The crowd was in ah again. GM CowenFan walked up again saying "Hello again. We're proud to select from the Swift Current Broncos of the WHL, Eetu Laurikainen." This will most likely be a replacement when Brodeur retires. Again the crowed was amazed. The Trades are listed below:

2013 NHL Off Season Report: Halifax Eagles

The Halifax Eagles headed into the 2013 off season with several questions, but none bigger than solving their goal scoring and goaltending woes. With a lacklustre free agent crop to choose from this year, the Eagles had to be strategic about managing their assets and crafting a lineup that would allow them to be competitive in the tough Eastern Conference.

Their first objective was to sign top prospect Nathan MacKinnon to a standard 3-year entry level contract. While he is not expected to make the opening night lineup, having MacKinnon signed for the foreseeable future is just one more thing management will not have to worry about down the road.

The Eagles issued qualifying offers to Shawn Matthias, Carter Camper, Anthony Camara, TJ Brennan, Colby Cohen, and Michael Hutchinson; while electing to let Jack Skille, Jamie Tardif, Garnet Exelby, Tyson Strachan, and Jose Theodore head to free agency. They then signed goaltender Jacob Markstrom to a 2-year contract, and defender Matt Gilroy a 2-year, 2-way deal.

With just over $25 million in cap space, the Eagles went all-out on the free agent market, doing their best to attract big name stars to the east coast. But curiously, the first big move for the team was a trade.

Jackets Too Much for Gladiators

Brandon Dubinsky sneaks behind the Gladiators' defense to put a breakaway goal.

A second round loss for the Columbus Blue Jackets would not have been good - they are a cup contender and had high expectations prior to this season. They had a somewhat disappointing regular season, finishing sixth, but have impressed thus far in the playoffs.

Seattle, on the other hand, made their first playoff appearance after being downright terrible during their first two seasons of existence. In this second round playoff match-up, the Blue Jackets came out on top in six games. Not a particularly surprising outcome - Columbus swept the first round and appears to be clicking at the right time. The Gladiators are just happy that they got where they did. It was a fantastic year for NHL hockey in Seattle.

And yet again, the San Jose Sharks prove why they are the best team in the league, winning round round of the 2022 NHL playoffs. The Sharks beat the Nashville Predators in seven games, but it wasn't easy. But, as usual, the Sharks came up clutch in Game Seven winning 4-3 in overtime. Pavel Radulov scored the game-winning goal and was assisted by linemate Jussi Kurvinen.

Mark Visentin came up big for the Sharks many times during the series.

Mark Visentin came up big on two occasions, one in Game One and the other in Game Seven. Both games went to Overtime and Visentin had to make many saves. During Game One, the Predators scored with 15 seconds left in the third, but Visentin became a brick wall during overtime, saving all 20 shots that were projected to the net. In Game Seven, Visentin saved all 30 shots in overtime. The reason why the shot totals were so much was because the Sharks took seven unnecessary penalties that led to a Predators powerplay.

Won the cup in my second season with Vancouver.

Then did a mini **** up by trading my 2nd, 6th and 5th for a 2nd. Meant to ask for more than that coming back but I picked up two good players anyway at the draft in Ho-Sang and Kostalek. Ho-Sang is 4 1/2 stars whilst Kostalek is 4 stars. Looking to move some prospects up now and also next year I'll be going for the #1 overall pick for McDavid.

Want to have more picks next year as well to build up on prospects.

The play-offs were eventful. Won Round 1 against the Kings 4-2. Went down 3-0 against Edmonton in the 2nd because their goalie Hoivenen was just unstoppable. Beat them 3-0 in Game 4, 2-1 in OT in Game 5 and 4-0 in Game and 5-2 in Game 7. Eriksson scored 4 goals in the last game. Swept Calgary 4-0 and beat Buffalo 4-2.

The San Jose Sharks lost to the Preds in seven games, which ends an era in their history.

"It had to end like this". That was all captain Cody Ceci had to say about the 5-4 Game 6 loss to the against the Phoenix Coyotes. "There's just nothing left to say, I'm speechless how it went down; I feel like I let everyone down with my play this year, especially GM Flamesrule. I'm beyond shocked." The Sharks didn't dominate the series like they usually do, so you knew that it was going to end badly, which it did. In Game One you could get the sense that things weren't going to go right, and it didn't. In Game One, the Sharks took a penalty 10 second in, you knew things weren't going right. And you definitely know things aren't going right when Mark Visentin let's in four goals per game.

The Sharks won two games in the series, but they were very lucky to win, as they were outshot each game. "In those games, all the bounces were going our way", said centerman Pavel Radulov. "But you knew it wasn't going to last; we needed to step our play up, but we didn't. That's why we didn't win. The better team lost."

Well, the bitterness still hasn't left. Sharks coaches had some fair words to say to the Coyotes, but we aren't going to repeat them in a newspaper article. GM Flamesrule also had some choice words that came out of his mouth, but we also won't share that. However, GM Flamesrule did have his end-of-the-season press conference:

"Hello Sharks fans. I am sorry to say that we lost in a grueling six game series against the Phoenix Coyotes. I still believe that this team still has it in them to win another cup or two. So, I leave you with these words: Keep your heads up as we won two Stanley Cups in the past ten years, keep your heads up as we won the division four times in the past ten years, and keep your heads up as the Sharks are the best team in the NHL, bar none. Long live San Jose!"

So, I guess this is it; the 10 years are up. I had a ton of fun doing a Sharks dynasty; I'd definitely do it again. In the span of ten years, I went to the playoffs six times. In those six, I went past the first round five times, and in the five times I won the cup twice. I also won the division fives times, which isn't too shabby. Lasty, I hit 100 points four times. Overall, I'm happy with what I did.

Must say, the 2021-2022 team was the best team out of the three, I'm actually surprised that we didn't win the cup again.

Now, some here might be asking what team I'll do next. I'm thinking the Predators or the Rangers, but I'm leaning towards the Rangers. Reason being is that the Rangers are a team with not many good prospects and are dwindling out of a playoff spot. I think it'd be interesting to do them. This time it'll be 15 years and not 10 years.

Needed a penalty killer and someone who's good at faceoffs.

Pascal Dupuis retired, Nathan MacKinnon will fill his spot this year. Christian Engstrand was terrible last year, and Daniel Cotton is NHL-ready so he will get some starts.

Pascal Dupuis retired, Nathan MacKinnon will fill his spot this year. Christian Engstrand was terrible last year, and Daniel Cotton is NHL-ready so he will get some starts.

Forgot to mention a couple things - Rundblad won the Norris, and, here are the two good prospects I picked up in rounds one and two of the draft:

20th overall pick: LW Ulf Holmstrom (59 overall, 19 years old, 3.5 yellow stars, PWF, Modo, Sweden)
40th overall pick: RW Alexandre Ranger (53 overall, 19 years old, 3.5 yellow stars, PLY, Baie-Comeau, Canada)

Devils add 2 players to boost Club

Derek Morris (Left), Trade. Mason Raymond (Right), Free Agent Signing.

We aren't doing terrible but we're inconsistent, Morris is a well respected Defenceman with good stats, a good contract, and just all around a good pick-up. David Clarkson wasn't getting things done on the 3rd line, most of our Depth wasn't doing well either. Mason is a speedy winger that is more of a 'Sniper', but can pass.

We signed Mason Raymond to a 1 Year Contract worth $3,000,000, he is 28 years old. And the Morris trade details are below:
