NHL 13 Dynasty Thread (Part 4)

Last night I started a new GM as the Dallas Stars, but I re-designed their jerseys to be much more sexier. I re-named them the Dallas Neptunes since "Stars" isn't a useable name in the Create-A-Team. I used the Minnesota North Stars logo which fits the name, at least. Here are the jerseys:

So here's what has happened so far. Midway through the first year, we were having an abysmal season with basically a .500 record. It was a few weeks before the trade deadline so I decided to blow the team up.

Just because a team has a superstar, doesn't mean they'll be a good team. However, when that superstar has solid support, the team can get it done. Such was the case with the 2013-14 Dallas Neptunes. After finishing 4th last in the league last year, the Neptunes signed a bunch of free agents - Brad Boyes, Bud Holloway, Peter Regin, Patrik Lundh, Brock Trotter, Atte Engren and Pavel Valentenko. Everyone expected the Neptunes to be abysmal once again this year, but they proved everyone wrong. The Neptunes finished 4th in the West (3rd in the league behind SJ and Buffalo) with 102 points (50-30-2). Jamie Benn led the team in scoring with a career year: 41 goals and 38 assists for 79 points. He was 4th in the league point-scoring race, behind only Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Alex Ovechkin, and Sidney Crosby. Benn also tied for 2nd in goals with Patrick Marleau - they both scored 41 goals, and were behind only Alex Ovechkin who scored 49.
Mid Season Acquisitions
Midway through January, the Neptunes' defense was struggling, but they were still hanging around 8th in the Western Conference. The Vancouver Canucks were well out of the playoff race, so the two teams agreed upon a trade. Dallas traded 26 year old defender Pavel Valentenko and 22 year old goaltender Frans Tuohimaa to Vancouver for Kevin Bieksa, a veteran defender.
At the trade deadline, Dallas was 6th in the West. The one glaring problem with their roster was the hole at center, so they made a trade with Boston. The Neptunes acquired 30 year old two-way center Patrice Bergeron from the Bruins in exchange for unsigned defensive prospect Valentin Zykov, 21 year old forward Tyson Dallman and one of their four 2nd round picks.

Loui Eriksson (+33), Jamie Benn (+32), and Nail Yakupov (+29) had the best plus/minus ratings in the league.
Trevor Daley led all defensemen in assists (45), and finished with 51 points, two behind Roman Josi for the league-lead in points by a defender.

I love 'em too. I think Dallas should make their jerseys look like that in real life, with their current logo, of course. The shade of green would probably be a bit different though, to match their logo. Maybe I should contact the organization and share my ideas?

Okay, I was writing in my own thread, but I'll be writing here from now on. I do QMJHL ones, not NHL though. Instead of continuing that, I'll restart so everyone can see from the beginning!
BATHURST TITAN BOUGHT.
The Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the QMJHL have been purchased. Titan alumni Patrice Bergeron, and Roberto Luongo, along with former Bathurst native Sean Couturier, have all pitched in to buy the team. Léo-Guy Morrisette, the former owner, said he couldn't resist their offer. "I can't publicize it, but I now have enough money to buy a new house, new car, and a new life. I am sad to leave the Titan, but everything comes to an end, and I wish these fine gentlemen good luck with the team." The new owners have already appointed their new GM. Sean's father, Sylvain, is moving from an assistant coach role with the team to general manager. Other than Sylvain, the entire staff has been wiped, and the team has also been. The Titan currently have a roster of 0 players. They will be signing/drafting every single player. "It's an interesting way of doing things, but when your team only gets 900 people a night, these types of changes are needed. We will start with the midget draft, which is coming up fairly soon." said part owner Patrice Bergeron. "Were going to leave staff hiring up to Sylvain, and he will be taking over for us in the media until further notice." noted Luongo. "I'm just going to add that we're all happy to be apart of this team, and that we promise Titan fans an exciting team one way or another next year." Sean Couturier added.

COUTURIER HIRES COACH
Sylvain Couturier announced this afternoon, that Jim Midgley is the new head coach of the Titan. "Jim is a classy guy, and has been around the game for a long time. He'll bring a wealth of experience to our team, and we're glad to have him here in Bathurst." Jim added this, and named his own assistants. "I'd like to thank Sylvain for this opportunity, I'm very honoured to have gotten chosen. I'd also like to thank the Mooseheads for everything they did for me. My assistants this year will be Luke Beck, who coached at OHA last season, and Forbes MacPherson, who coached at the University of Prince Edward Island." Both Beck, and MacPherson weren't available for comment. Both are also Islanders, and are good friends. On another note, Peter Nevin has been named head scout of the team. Next up for the Titan is the midget draft, where the Titan hold 13 picks, all in the first 8 round, with 2 in the first round.

How do you do a QMJHL franchise? Did you just put that team in the NHL?
Doesn't sound like it to me.
It's really just a one season thing haha. I always mix up the rosters to make it funner, and sometimes it'll get boring, but if you get a fun team to play with, it's awesome to play and write about!

Former Leaf Phil Kessel now entertains Sens fans, and is on the way to a career year
The Northeast has undergone a huge change, as former Bruins captain Zdeno Chara has been traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. With the Bruins appearing to slip from the playoffs, GM Peter Chiarelli decided to trade away older players Chara, Derek Morris, and Rich Peverley in exchange for picks and prospects. Meanwhile, the other 4 teams in the division are taking advantage of a weakening Bruins squad, and are vying for playoff positions this year.
The Chicago Blackhawks also traded away a valuable component of their previous Cup runs in Viktor Stalberg, opting for more defensive depth.

However, many fans questioned the one move they did make. The Senators traded away 4 1st round picks and defender Eric Gryba for the slumping Lightning's 1st rounder this year, and two AHL players in Ruslan Fedotenko and Benoit Pouliot, after they learned that phenom Sean Day had been permitted to enter the NHL Draft one year early. Many expect that GM Brian Murray will attempt to draft Day, who has spent his OHL career with the Ottawa 67's so far, but it is unconfirmed.

Head Coach Paul MacLean is all smiles after qualifying for the post-season
After losing 6 of their 9 games prior to the Trade Deadline, many had expected Ottawa to make some moves in order to make the postseason. Head Coach MacLean wasn't given any new toys by GM Murray, and instead had to make do with what he had. So, he did, and there was immediate success following the line juggling.

The Senators dropped their first two games in Sunrise, Florida, both to a score of 4-3. Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner split the first two games, but then Lehner took the third game at home. Former Sen Andrei Kostitsyn scored the game-winning goal in the fourth game, in a 3-2 loss.
In the deciding game, with 13.8 seconds to go and down 1-2, Lehner was pulled for the extra man. Nikita Filatov snapped it past Jacob Markstorm to bring it into extra time. But it wasn't enough, as a Kris Versteeg slap shot trickled past a scrambling Lehner for the Panthers to advance.

It's draft day here in Quebec, at the Pepsi Colisée, home of the Remparts. The Titan are absolutely loaded with picks, totalling 13 in 8 rounds. They pick at 14, and 18 in the first round, at 22 in the second round, at 39 and 50 in the third, 61 and 69 in the fourth, at 76 and 82 in the fifth, at 100 and 112, in the sixth and seventh rounds respectively, and they also own back to back picks at 140, and 141 in the eighth.
When the time comes to make their first pick, the Titan have lots of options. They could take anyone, but Lucas Batt, Carl Neill, and Matthew Highmore look to be the top options. The owners are on hand for the draft, so they lead the trek up to the stage, followed by GM Sylvain Couturier, head scout Peter Nevin, and head coach Jim Midgley. Couturier (Sylvain) steps up to the mic. "First off, our team would like to congratulate the Saint John Sea Dogs on their President's Cup, and the Shawinigan Cataractes on their Memorial Cup. We would also like to thank the Quebec Remparts for their hospitality here this afternoon. Most importantly though, we're here to make our pick. The Bathurst Titan are proud to select, 14th overall, from Dartmouth, forward Matthew Highmore!" The staff of the Titan all smile, as Highmore walks up to the stage to greet them. Matthew shakes hands with all of them, before putting on his #12 (2012) Highmore jersey, and posing for a draft picture. Matthew tells the media how he feels. "It's an honour. Going in the first round is an amazing feeling, and staying in the Maritimes is even better." Head Scout Peter Nevin tells us about Highmore, "Matthew is a very solid, well-rounded forward. He can both put the puck in the net and shutdown the opposition. It's funny because he plays a very similar style to (owner) Sean Couturier. We're glad to add him to our team."
The Titan don't have to wait long to make their next pick. With three picks in between, Titan staff are soon going to be heading back up on stage, and when they finally do, it's the same 6 men who go up. This time, it's head scout Peter Nevin going to the mic. "With the 18th overall pick in the first round, Acadie-Bathurst selects, from the Boston Junior Bruins, Conor Garland!" Garland also walks up to the stage, and meets his coach, GM, and owners. Garland also has a #12 jersey but it of course says Garland, and not Highmore on it. Conor, a 5'6" winger, is also very glad to be a member of the Titan. "I didn't even know if I was going to be drafted, now going in the first round, it's a dream come true. I can't wait for training camp and hopefully I'll crack the roster." Peter Nevin added this about Conor, "He is obviously very small, but his hands are already among the best in the Quebec League, and he can pick corners incredibly. He'll need to bulk up, but he has a solid shot at making the team next year."
Acadie-Bathurst ends the first round with that pick, and in the second round, there will be no interviews, and players won't be going up on stage. The Titan picks 22, and when it's go time, head coach Jim Migley makes the pick. "With the 22nd pick in the second round, Bathurst picks Julien Pelletier." Pelletier heads to the draft floor to meet his team, and teammates. Bathurst also selected forward Jonathan Lacroix-Courville (39), and defenseman Brendan Nickerson (50) in the third round, d-man Maxime Chevalier (61), and forward Antoine Pouliot (69) in the fourth round. The team selected forward Marc-Antoine Germain (76), and goaltender Jason Rioux (82) in the fifth, defenseman Mathieu Amyot (100) in round six, forward Massimo Carozza in the seventh (112), and forwards Jonathan Bourcier (140), and Samuel Desjardins (141) in the final eight round.

The Bathurst Titan are proud to select, 14th overall, from Dartmouth, forward Matthew Highmore!" The staff of the Titan all smile, as Highmore walks up to the stage to greet them. Matthew shakes hands with all of them, before putting on his #12 (2012) Highmore jersey, and posing for a draft picture. Matthew tells the media how he feels. "It's an honour. Going in the first round is an amazing feeling, and staying in the Maritimes is even better." Head Scout Peter Nevin tells us about Highmore, "Matthew is a very solid, well-rounded forward. He can both put the puck in the net and shutdown the opposition. It's funny because he plays a very similar style to (owner) Sean Couturier. We're glad to add him to our team."
The Titan don't have to wait long to make their next pick. With three picks in between, Titan staff are soon going to be heading back up on stage, and when they finally do, it's the same 6 men who go up. This time, it's head scout Peter Nevin going to the mic. "With the 18th overall pick in the first round, Acadie-Bathurst selects, from the Boston Junior Bruins, Conor Garland!" Garland also walks up to the stage, and meets his coach, GM, and owners. Garland also has a #12 jersey but it of course says Garland, and not Highmore on it. Conor, a 5'6" winger, is also very glad to be a member of the Titan. "I didn't even know if I was going to be drafted, now going in the first round, it's a dream come true. I can't wait for training camp and hopefully I'll crack the roster." Peter Nevin added this about Conor, "He is obviously very small, but his hands are already among the best in the Quebec League, and he can pick corners incredibly. He'll need to bulk up, but he has a solid shot at making the team next year."
Acadie-Bathurst ends the first round with that pick, and in the second round, there will be no interviews, and players won't be going up on stage. The Titan picks 22, and when it's go time, head coach Jim Migley makes the pick. "With the 22nd pick in the second round, Bathurst picks Julien Pelletier." Pelletier heads to the draft floor to meet his team, and teammates. Bathurst also selected forward Jonathan Lacroix-Courville (39), and defenseman Brendan Nickerson (50) in the third round, d-man Maxime Chevalier (61), and forward Antoine Pouliot (69) in the fourth round. Neptunes Win First Playoff Series Since 2008

There are high expectations for the Dallas Neptunes this year after they racked up 50 wins in the regular season. Until this year, they hadn't even qualified for the NHL playoffs since 2008, when they were still named the Dallas Stars. That year, they lost in the Conference Finals to the Detroit Red Wings. Now, with a completely different looking team, the Dallas Neptunes have won their first playoff series since 2008.
Up against the Nashville Predators, the Neptunes got off to a great start in game one. The final score was 5-3 for the Neptunes. They scored 3 goals in the second period, and defenseman Alex Goligoski finished the game with 3 assists. Game two was a different story, as Dallas scored only one goal in a 3-1 loss. They bounced back, however, defeating the Predators in game three, in overtime. Trade deadline acquisition Patrice Bergeron sniped a wrist shot past Pekka Rinne for the overtime winner, and Dallas took the game by a score of 3-2. The Predators took game four, on the back on Pekka Rinne's 29 save effort, as they won 3-0. In game five, the Neptunes exploded in the first period, scoring 4 goals. They added another goal in the second period and went on to win 5-1. Game six was do or die for the Predators, but the Neptunes handled them rather easily, winning 3-1. Patrice Bergeron, Loui Eriksson, and Nail Yakupov all scored 5 points in the series - Bergeron had 5 goals. Brad Boyes, Alex Goligoski, Jamie Benn and Bud Holloway all scored 4 points. Kari Lehtonen finished the series with a 2.16 GAA.
The Neptunes will be playing the 8th seeded Vancouver Canucks in round two, who upset the first-seeded San Jose Sharks in the first round.

The Western Conference Semi-Finals series between Dallas and Vancouver featured lots of goals. 38 goals were scored in total by both teams over the course of six games. Game one started off with an absolutely terrible defensive showing by both teams: the Neptunes led 4-3 after the first period. Neptunes forward Brock Trotter and Canucks forward Chris Higgins both scored twice in the first 20 minutes. Both teams tightened up for the rest of the game, although the Canucks did tie it up in the second period. In the third, Alex Goligoski scored the game winning goal for the Neptunes on the powerplay, and they won game one 5-4. Game two featured another offensive outburst, this time in the third period by the Canucks. The game was tied 2-2 after the second period, but Vancouver struck four times in the third to win 6-3. The Neptunes finally smartened up and played fantastic defensive hockey in game three, as they won 3-0. Everyone on Dallas' top line scored a goal (Benn, Eriksson, and Yakupov) while Kari Lehtonen earned himself a 27-save shutout. In game four, Dallas had what was likely their best first period in franchise history. They scored five goals, including two by Loui Eriksson, and they led the Canucks 5-1 after the first period.
