Jamie Benn Named Captain of the Dallas Neptunes
September 4th, 2014
It didn't come as a surprise to most people, but this morning the Dallas Neptunes announced the naming of their next captain, Jamie Benn. The Neptunes became captain-less back in 2013 when Brendan Morrow was traded at the trade deadline to Pittsburgh for Joe Morrow. Since the 2013 trade deadline, Benn, Loui Eriksson, and Trevor Daley all served as alternate captains. Benn lead the Neptunes in scoring during the 2013-14 regular season, scoring 41 goals and 79 points. Neptunes coach Lindy Ruff, who was hired midway through the 2012-13 season, spoke to the media about his selection:
"I don't think this choice comes as a surprise to most of you." Ruff told the media with a chuckle. "Besides Jamie, we have a lot of great leaders on this team. Loui [Eriksson], Kevin [Bieksa], Trevor [Daley], Patrice [Bergeron]... and a whole bunch more. But to me, Jamie stands out. Not only does he lead our team offensively, but he's a hard-working player, he goes into the tough places, and always gives it his all, night in and night out. He leads us in the locker room as well... he's a great role model, he handles the fans well and I think he's the new face of the franchise. I believe he's the best choice to lead our team going forward."

The Dallas Neptunes' 2013-14 season ended with a Western Conference Finals loss to the Edmonton Oilers, a great turn-around after they failed to qualify for the playoffs last season. The Oilers went on to lose in the Cup Finals, to the Toronto Maple Leafs, who won their first Stanley Cup since 1967.
Fans were surprised that the Neptunes did not make any offseason moves at all besides releasing veteran forward Vernon Fiddler to free agency. GM Jason Melbrook has told the media that he is not going to make any big moves unless he feels the team can be a cup competitor this year, in which case he may add a significant piece mid-season. The team may have made it to the Conference Finals last season, but Melbrook feels that many of the organization's prospects can join the team within the next few years, making a big move now somewhat pointless.
