It would cost someone a roster spot to do it, though, right?

No playoff team is gonna do that. If a non-playoff team does it, well, that would be very interesting.
And $15.000, as he is a player with 6 completed seasons.

You could us that money better by beating up three star players to end their season.

Carolina is still at 28 total for active roster, injured players, and taxi squad per The Athletic. The NHL rules say a max of 23 on the roster with 6 taxi squad players, so it's not above the 29 limit.

McCormick has been one of the guys yo-yoing between the active roster and the taxi squad all season, so unless he hit some threshold in time or games played since he last cleared I'm not sure why he needs to clear now.

Maybe this is opening a spot for a couple of Black Aces to be called up to the taxi squad for the playoff run? That would suck for McCormick, though.

There are no roster limits after the trade deadline. Teams can have as many players as they want on the roster so long as they're still cap compliant.

If there are no roster limits, and Carolina is a couple million below the cap, and Lempo has estimated about a million in pro-rated bonuses for Svech and Necas, does anyone have another theory why McCormick would be waived?

Maybe they want to get an AHL guy into one of the Nashville games, and since they’d still be regular season games, they’d still be subject to cap and roster limits. I’d guess we’ll see if they recall anyone after tonight’s Wolves game. (But like you said, they should have the roster and cap space for a call-up)

Maybe Martinook is coming back? (Probably it on this one as I don’t think he’s on LTIR so his $2M is probably already baked in)

Other than that, doesn’t really make much sense unless they’re really pinching pennies on paying McCormick’minor league salary while he’s on the Taxi Sqaud vs. NHL salary while on the big roster.

Here's what may have happened:

1) McCormick last cleared waivers on Jan 21st.
2) Yesterday was the 10th game McCormick has played in while on Emergency Recall since clearing waivers. Meaning his waiver clearance has expired.
3) Players on Emergency Recall must be returned to the Taxi/AHL when the injury causing the emergency is over.
4) Teams can also use 4 Regular Recalls after the Trade Deadline.
5) So Carolina has the choice (a) placing McCormick on waivers before sending him to the taxi squad, or (b) Using one of the 4 Regular Recalls to convert McCormick to a non-emergency roster player.
6) However, it looks like Carolina may have already used all 4 of their Regular Recalls. Ryan/Bean (APR26), Bean (APR15), Gadiner(APR12). Though it's possible the April 15th Bean was an Emergency Recall.
7) If Carolina is out of Regular Recalls then the only option available to them is (a) place McCormick on waivers before returning him to the Taxi squad.

Days of estimation are past, my friend. The exact sum is $956,561 and 17 cents, plus $20k roster bonus for Geekie.

Or c) they don't like McCormick on a personal level so they waived him unnecessarily hoping he gets claimed by Buffalo out of pure malicious spite

"We are proud to have DieHard batteries powering the Hurricanes' drive to the Stanley Cup," said Waddell.
As the presenting sponsor, DieHard will be featured by the team prominently throughout the playoffs, including the decal on the helmets of all Hurricanes' players, arena window graphics and social media posts. DieHard batteries are available at Advance Auto Parts and participating Carquest locations nationwide.
"DieHard batteries have been trusted by motorists for being reliable, durable and powerful, attributes held in high esteem by the Hurricanes," said Allison Bubar, senior vice president and general manager of DieHard. "Our DieHard team is charged up to ride alongside the Hurricanes for the Stanley Cup Playoffs."

Kudos to them.

I hope the helmet logos aren't stupid gaudy like some other teams' have been. The pnc ones were about as tasteful as possible, although I still just completely hate the idea on principle

This seems so bizarre to me for reasons I don't understand. I know the Canes have tons of sponsors and that isn't weird. The blurb just reads like idiocracy to me.

Like I expect Diehard battery to create a hfboards account and update us regularly on how the Canes are "charging their batteries this intermission" or similar tropes.
