Since the stat came into existence officially from the NHL the Canes have just under 1,000 more takeaways than any other team in the league. 1,000 in 10 years.

What’s more likely, the Canes are the best pick pockets over the last decade by an absolutely ridiculous margin, or the stat guy is a bit generous with them compared to the rest of the league?

What about away teams here vs at other arenas?

No idea how to do that.

What I can tell you is Jeff Skinner had 90+ takeaways in his dogshit final season with the Canes and hasn’t had 90 in the last 2 years combined in Buffalo.

Until you can point to other data, I'm going to go under the assumption that it's primarily a system difference rather than a stat counting flaw (although there could be elements if both).

It looks more normalized over the last couple of years. They are still at the top but they aren’t outlier numbers. It’s possible the recent numbers are more refined, but I’d be awfully surprised if Justin Faulk actually dispossessed a player from the puck more over the last 3 years than Victor Hedman, but the way the D cuts players off at the blueline is a stylistic choice not all teams make.

A 1990 Canadian stamp from a series depicting mythological Canadian animals has a kraken. Seattle is like almost in Canada.

"Le Kraken" is what we call it in Europe, btw.

All I know is, Slavin cleanly strips pucks off other players more consistently than anyone I’ve seen since Lidstrom. So even if the stats are wrong somehow, they’re not telling us anything that isn’t true.

Yeah this isn’t about him. He’s ridiculous.

So maybe this is a dumb question but does it rhyme with "crackin'" or "breakin'"?
Wiktionary says /ˈkɹɑːkən/

It's neither. The vowel's like posh Brits' "dark" I guess.

Seattle Kraaaken. I'm loving this more every minute.

The opening on-ice animations gonna be awesome. First they darken, then comes Kraaken.

"You warmed up the sea, and woke up Kraaken!"

And obviously that one part of audience will be "Chthulhu fhtagnen! Chthulhu fhtagnen!", but they'll be escorted out.

Doesn't really change the point though, naming a team after a pop culture reference, ESPECIALLY one without local historical relevance is just an atrociously bad move. Even going on the mythology angle... OK? It's not the regional mythology. This isn't the Trondheim Kraken or Copenhagen Kraken... it's f***ing SEATTLE. Much like the Raptors or Mighty Ducks this is going to become dated pretty damn fast. One of the biggest questions that any team needs to ask before deciding on a name is "what's the relevance?" if there is no relevance to the area and the only reason to go with it is "it sounds cool" then CHOOSE ANOTHER f***ING NAME. "It sounds cool" is how we nearly ended up with the Avs being called the "Rocky Mountain Extreme" before sanity prevailed.

ONE QUESH’ CHIEF.

ARE GIANT SQUIDS BADASS?

You'll note that he was still among the league leaders in that list posted earlier while playing in a different system on a horrific team. And if you every actually paid attention to anything other than him not playing the body in the 1995 conception of defense, you would have noticed that he was ridiculously f***ing good at it.

You’ll note that list goes back to his last Hurricanes season in 2017-2018.

2017-2018: Carolina - 93
2018-2019: Buffalo - 56 (with 150+ more minutes of TOI)
2019-2020 - 26, though he missed time.

Two of his most productive seasons have been at center, so I wonder what exactly he has to do to answer the "is Aho a center" question. He's led the team to the playoffs in consecutive seasons as the #1 center. Do we think he would be a 50 goal scorer and/or the first winger to win the Selke since Jere Lehtinen if he moved back to wing or something? I'm honestly wondering what the argument is.
I think he’s a great offensive player who’d have the production as easily at wing as at center, he’s in his prime. It’s not the position that’s getting him the points. At times I think he looks more dangerous offensively on the wing, and I just dont always think he’s strongest at the position. Rod felt the same way too but as you say he’s having great years and there’s no one better to be in that spot over him. He’s earned it and will obviously stay there. I think Trochek getting his game back will make Aho better, and take some of the load off.

The point being I don’t think he’s a top ten center in the league and that Zibs deserves to be ranked than him. That’s the conversation that was happening there, not an Aho at center discussion.

Would it be wildly inappropriate for the crowd at PNC to chant "SMOKE SOME KRAK" during our games against Seattle? (asking for a friend)
