So wandering onto the main board made me feel twice as old than life normally does.

So apparently there's a whole generation that doesn't know what a Kraken is in pop culture? It's from the 80's movie Clash of Titans, and the "release the Kraken" reference/meme comes from that. Something that was often said that crossed generations for a long time. Then they redid the movie in 2010 because it was still such a lingering concept. The plot of the movie is how they go on an adventure trying to learn how to kill the colossal beast before it destroys the city the main characters are associated with. Most older farts would find that to be obvious like I do, it's not a subtle or far reaching reference to me. They've used it at sports events even recently.

Then there's a generation of folks that only know it from one of the Pirate's of the Caribbean movies, and using it there is an obvious nod for parents bringing their kids to see those movies. Maybe using it there spawned the idea of remaking Clash?

So I've said a few things about it that some people here might've had no idea what I was talking about. Mind blown.

Now just imagine how old those of us that know the Kraken from Nordic legends feel...

It's not you. They remade the movie in 2010 with the same quote:

It’s obviously much more intense than George Costanza’s role on one “Seinfeld” episode as the New York Yankees’ assistant traveling secretary. Sundheim does hotel scheduling, travel scheduling and plans where and when practices will be held. He could perform a wide variety of tasks in that role, including helping a player or coach get a driver’s license or helping them get a tee time, for example.

Added to that, he’s also the team’s designated compliance officer for this trip. Each day by 10 p.m. in Toronto, he must fill out a report that certifies that all members of the Canes’ traveling party are compliant with all aspects of Phase 4 protocols. “That’s everything from making sure everyone had their daily PCR [polymerase chain reaction] testing, to completing their symptoms screening through remaining inside the secure zone to wearing face coverings where they’re supposed to be wearing face coverings.”

Sundheim and the rest of the Canes players and staff won’t be able to leave the NHL’s secure area until Aug. 9. That is, of course, unless they lose the Rangers series (Game 5, if needed, would be Aug. 8). Until Aug. 9, barring elimination, they can’t leave the bubble even to go on walks or runs. It will be a challenge to work out since hotel equipment will be limited and plenty of others want to work out as well.

This is exactly why I was against Kraken from the get-go. It's not a terrible name, but it's an era-specific pop culture reference that will not age well.

Nah it's in the zeitgeist at this point. I've never seen Clash of Titans, but I know the Kraken is a cephalopodic monster. It's like saying "Godzilla is era specific." Nah, even if you've never seen any iteration of Godzilla movies you know he's a big dino. Kraken is even more generic at this point though. I've played board games that reference him, TV shows mention him. I honestly couldn't have told you the exact origin of "release the Kraken" (having never seen the movie) but I know him as a generic sea monster.

Much like Raptors, another movie-driven name that aged quickly.

Naming a team "Kraken" today is like naming it "Vampires" or "Zombies" ten years ago. It's not that people won't get the reference, it just won't age well.

I mean I didn't even know the Raptors were named after anything (but since you've said something I'm assuming Jurassic Park), and I'm just like "yeah that's their name it's a dinosaur".

Now, their original jerseys... that's another story :D

120 years ago they named some team after red socks, which certainly aren't in style and frankly is a ridiculously unintimidating name and yet it's very widely accepted today as fine.

If Kraken ever becomes an obscure reference, it just means schools need to introduce more mythology into their curriculum. My favorite parts of middle/high school was anytime we studied anything mythological. Didn’t matter if it was Egyptian, Norse, Greek, Roman, Hawaiian, etc. If it had gods, monsters and heroes, I was all about it.

But even so, it’s not like kraken is some obscure monster. If it were something like the Seattle Selkies, then I could see that argument, but kraken is pretty commonly understood (at least IMO) as a massive squid-like monster.

Let's not forget its reintroduction into pop culture through Pirates of the Caribbean. They also named a ride after it at SeaWorld. I don't think it will "die out" or become obscure really. As @Anton Dubinchuk said with Godzilla, it's pretty well known these days as a creature reference (same with Dino's from Jurassic Park)

Guys.

I said it will soon be dated, not obscure. Those are two completely different things.

Neither Raptors nor Mighty Ducks are obscure, but both are extremely dated. Nobody would even haves considered them as team names outside of a 3-year window. Kraken isn’t quite to that extreme, but it’s close.

If it was possible for sports owners to wipe their fanbase’s memory MIB-style so their brands could be replaced without anyone knowing it, a whole bunch of them would do it. Red Sox, Maple Leafs, Knicks, Browns. Those are terrible brand choices that continue to exist through sheer inertia. Those organizations leave a ton of money on the table as a result of having names and logos that can’t be changed, but also don’t sell themselves without a nostalgia/dynasty connection.
