Weird timing on this trade for both teams.

I find it weird how Garoppolo's trajectory has gone. His draft stock was a mid-round pick, then went up for no obvious reason. Pats draft him in the 2nd and he looks fine in a small amount of games, although gets injured. In the last two years, rumors were that teams were offering a 1st+ for him.. now he goes for an extremely high 2nd.

All that said, gotta trust Shanahan on this one. Excited to actually see Garoppolo play, too.

I don't expect him to start until week 12 after the bye when Staley is also expected to be back.

Good luck the next 2 weeks CJ!

So Pats misjudged market at draft and in offseason

Still salvaged decent value moving him now but why not keep Jacoby Brissett?

Surely they need to plan for future eventually , right?

As for this deal good for 49ers as I think Jimmy G has all the tools to be good #1

Browns come up losers again

That's what puzzles me too, if they were going to trade Garropolo all along, why trade Brissett too?

brissett isn't good. if he's significant part of your future, well, your future doesn't look very good. and right now, for this season, it doesn't matter for the pats whether their backup is hoyer or brissett. season over if bray goes down.

but the timing of this trade is interesting and it's very much possible that the pats misjudged the market and screwed up with the timing of the trade.

Sure he played close to a full season but I would argue Garoppolo showed enough promise in his 2 starts last season as well as his superior college pedigree that there is no comparison between the two.
5th time's the charm.

San Fran just wasted a pick on a guy they could have signed for the same overvalued contract in the off season and New England got a nice bump from a 3rd compensatory in 2019 to a high 2nd this year.

They have no competition though. In FA they'd have the Broncos, Jets, Jaguars, Browns, Cardinals and whoever else.

Rumor has it (was repeated a few times on local radio by big name hosts, so not some pure twitter speculation, IMO, but it may be) is that Brady's camp was worried Belicheck would move on from him in the off season and this was a push from Kraft. Explains why Belicheck had a press conference and gushed over Jimmy on the way out; legendary Pats he loved (like Vrabel and Seymour) got written press releases when he moved them; Jimmy was a back up QB for 3 years.

Giant grain of salt but interesting theory nonetheless.

Correct, they can simply exercise the franchise tag on him while they work out a contract, that keeps him off limits to other teams.

If they wait until after their bye week, they have Seattle, Houston, Tenn, Jax, Chicago, and Rams left. Chicago is winnable and maybe Jax if bortles is terrible and maybe Tenn. Other 3 will be hard to beat.

AZ and NYG are winnable if Jimmy had a bit of time to learn the offense.

Lol... NFL.com is reporting that the browns tried to deal for AJ mccarron but we're late with the paperwork. Deal was supposed to be a 2nd and 3rd. They have multiple picks so likely not their own picks but those acquired from other teams.

Man, they can't get anything right.

They would have traded him to another team if it wasn't sf.

There's one reporter who claims he has a source inside the Brady camp that says Belicheck was looking to move on from Brady after this season but Kraft overruled BB and wanted Brady to finish his career as a Patriot.

Absolute steal for the Niners and he'll look even better once they get some weapons around him. He's going to get PAID.
