Yea..true, but Boucher does seem like a smart coach. He's tactical. Yea, it didn't work out for him at the end, but he did get Tampa to a game away from getting to the Cup and that was without their starting goalie.
Therrien isn't tactical at all. He's a rah rah, send a message type of coach. Those coaches never last too long.
I don't know about Muller. Sometimes you need to fail a time or two before you get it together. I think a second time around with the right team, he could win.
Muller will be the head coach in TO next year.
Just my 2 cents as a Canes fan.
Muller is a good guy. You can tell that he still has that "one of the boys" vibe. I don't think he's said anything abrasive in his entire time here.
That said, the Canes are not a well coached team.
1) The PP is abysmal and it's not just due to player slumps. They spent the first part of his tenure trying to run lame set plays, and the second half looking confused and hesitant. There are serious, serious issues with the PP timing and positioning which have been a huge factor in our failure to make the playoffs. This is a coaching issue, probably the most obvious issue with Muller.
2) I wouldn't go so far as to say he's lost the room (because who really knows) but there are a lot of little hints that some players have checked out. This may or may not be Muller's fault, but it's something that he failed to control.
3) The team really doesn't have the gritty identity that he preaches. They're soft, crazy soft. Again, that may not be entirely his fault because he didn't pick the players -- but at the same time, they look like a bunch of guys deciding individually whether they feel like playing hard for each other. Not like a team. At some level that goes back to coaching.
TBH I think a lot of the issues originate in the front office, but that doesn't excuse Muller for the dumpster fire of a PP or the lack of discipline. He had a rough first NHL gig here and hopefully learned some lessons about controlling an NHL locker room.
Yup, our 13th ranked pp needs help from a guy that has had one of the leagues worse pp for the last 2 years.
Our 4th ranked pk unit is also badly needs his help.
