Seems like you have ignored everything leading up to this signing.

You’re blaming Myers just because you want to.

Even with Myers contract the Jets still have enough cap space to sign Morrissey long term at the going rate for a defenseman of his caliber.

I'm not blaming Myers. I'm saying keeping Myers kept dollars away from a possible long term Morrissey deal now. He's not the only one.

And they might have, but they would have zero cap flexibility if they did, so the offer wasn't likely what you'd expect on a 6 or 7 year deal. Considering Wiebe mentioned that they discussed both a long term and short term deal, it's pretty clear they're looking at cap implications and think more money will be available in 2 years because our cap situation is what it is right now.

But then no space or ability with performance bonuses to be a buyer at the deadline, regardless of potential injuries. If you're a win now team you gotta work on that wiggle room. The Jets are in a very weird spot being a win now team with so many key guys still on ELC.
So your argument is that to jets should downgrade their defense for the entire season and playoff so they can upgrade their team for the playoffs?

Seems kind of dumb to me.

Kind of looks like Chevy blinked first. Oh well. He's signed now. I would have been happier with this news had Trouba signed a long-term extension this summer. All this is going to do is drive up the cost of his next contract. Chevy and the boys had better be getting some cheap depth coming up, because something tells me the gang isn't going to be kept together much longer.

I would like to sign everybody long term for low AAV.

I would have liked to get at least 1 of Trouba & Morrissey locked up. But I'm not unhappy with this.

Nope. My point is if you sign Morrissey long-term right now you are basically guaranteeing you don't have space to add anyone this season. Wouldn't be a terrible choice, but if say 55 or 33 or 44 or 8 or 37 have a serious injury we're probably going to want to replace them. Also nice to add depth heading towards post-season even in full health.

Glad he's signed. Looks like Morrissey and his agent got the bridge. It's fair value and gives Josh the chance to grow his game offensively before his next deal.

Now let's hope Maurice actually uses him on the PP next season

Edit:

With regards to long term as I have mentioned Morrissey doesn't have the counting numbers to get an upper market range deal wilhich would he in the $5.7 million range on a 79.5 million cap. The Jets also don't have the cap space to pay him that on a long term deal this year.

If your looking to blame anyone blame Maurice for under utilizing Morrissey the last two seasons. 4th in avg ice time among dmen each of the last two seasons with no PP time. If I was Josh I would want to be used according to my results before committing long term.

As for Chevy I have to say I'm underwhelmed with his contract work this summer. Painted himself into a corner with little wiggle room to really offer Morrissey an enticing enough long term deal. The Wheeler deal is poor and he is keeping around mediocre players making way too much money in Myers etc. That also hurts his ability to pay a young top pairing dmen enough on a long term deal. That is one area where Chevy still needs a lot of work imo. He has an issue with paying too much money for expendable bottom of the roster parts.

Yes, they still needed to move out Mason. They'll have around 2.5M in cap space. They shouldn't have any problems keeping Vesalainen and paying his performance bonuses, if necessary.

Exactly. They have space for Injuries and a deadline deal. It makes me think the Jets were likely offering in the range of 4.5 to 4.75 on a long term deal. If they offered 5.25 to 5.5 they would have no space

So, including the 3.7 or so in performance bonuses, we have how much space now?

Lets just assume Vesalainen and his cap hit are going down, because I didn't include his bonus.

Surprised a long term didn’t happen. That aav seems about 500k lower than it should be, which is probably what the had to give up to get Chevy to forgo a long term deal and accept a bridge.

Guess we can add a piece of a Stastny type at the tdl again which is a good thing, or we can get a goalie should we need one

We should have enough strength without another Stas. Giving up another 1st. Not have any real holes with Ros as our 2c.

The nice thing about the available cap space is that it's prorated a significant amount by the trade deadline. I don't know the specifics, but the Jets can fit a relatively expensive player on a rental at the TDL _if_ they choose to.
