Oilers are in pretty good shape for a couple years assuming things click with the new players. The two biggest weaknesses (Goaltending and Defense) were heavily addressed, although at a serious cost.

Most of the current team is on multi year deals so as long as the cap reasonably rises, younger guys will be able to be retained. Definitely only have a couple contracts that will be hard to move if necessary, and the team is bigger and more geared toward 2 way play rather than just skill and flash.

I posted this before, but would people be interested in a complete fantasy draft? I was thinking if we get enough people (20+) we could ignore the salary cap.

If we have less than that, I think it would be better if we used the players salary. Either way, if we did do a fantasy draft what would you guys prefer if interested?

I like the idea. Cap or no cap is fine with me.

I'd give it a whirl.

Even without 30 teams, you can always make it interesting by lowering the salary cap by a similar percentage (20 teams - 66% NHL cap) just to keep people focused on getting under, or add to the roster size as if some of your minor leaguers would count against the cap.

After a busy offseason the leafs roster has finaly taken shape. We went from a cap team with a bunch of overpaid players, to a cap team with only a few overpaid players (all of which have potential to earn their contracts except Macdonald....we just hope he can provide bottom pairing PK skills). I know that many of the trades the leafs have made did not seem to make much sense, but the Leafs targeted a few players through UFA (Specifically Stafford, Sekera and Petry) and trades (Tanev. Ehlers, Sheahan, Eberle) that we felt could help the team rebuild more quickly, and we made the necessary changes to fit them not only under the cap but on the roster. The leafs management is confident our top 9 whbecuase they have a great mix of skill, size and defensive capability. We feel that Staal/Sheahan/Komarov can take the defensive load to allow players like Hoffman, Nylander, Eberle, and Ehlers to flourish. On the back end we have a legitimate top 4 of defenders in Sekera, Petry, Rielly and Tanev. The trade for Tanev/Hoffman was hard to make but the leafs feel that Hoffman is just scratching the surface of his goal scoring potential and Tanev will provide the defensive confidence to allow Rielly to become a true 2 way #1 defenseman.

Thanks for putting up with all of our trades and sorry JVR, we miss you already and will always welcome you back (to trade you again).

The Jets are pretty happy with the off-season. We believe the additions of Malkin and Kessel have us poised to make a big playoff run this year.

I wanted to win the "Idiot Who Traded McDavid" award, but I thought I'd be the only nominee.

It would be fun to somehow sim this out and then have people face what they left themselves with next offseason.

Yeah, I'm curious who all planned for the future cap-wise.

I would do it again too.
I loved this.
Prefer to have Predators though.

It's a good group to start with. That GM has put together a very good group of players/prospects.

The leafs are in try and make the playoffs and worry about the cap later mode, luckily most of the contracts currently are 2+ years, the only issue is Rielly coming off his ELC after this year but hopefully an increase in cap would fit him in it. And in 2 years most of the buyouts come off/macdonald can be cheaply bought out.

The Kings did a slight retooling of their roster. They moved a couple mid aged but bigger contracts for youth (felt they had a very good draft), and added some very good offensive talent. They still have Quick, so hopefully they can get a few more goals and get back into the playoffs.

The Lightning are looking very strong now. They added some defensiveness to their forwards and the D got younger. Only one player on D over 25 (Green). Plus they picked up a very good goalie in case Bishop gets hurt/in case of injury.
