Let's just not have this thread become yet another lesson on the laws of physics.

The debate about Marner's size and strength is going to continue until he proves he can play in the NHL.

However I'm not convinced leaf fans will be patient enough to give him a chance to develop particularly when they have him ranked as a top 3 prospect in the league.

Thankfully I think leafs management will learn from the Drouin situation in Tampa and handle him properly.

If you read carefully, there's only 1 or 2 posters jumping on him for his performance at said showcase. Most everyone else has stated numerous times...it was only 2 games, played at the beginning of Aug, and the whole team stunk.

I don't know where you got the idea that everyone here is turning on Marner.

This was the best under 20 players from Canada, USA, Sweden and Finland all auditioning for their chances to represent their countries at the upcoming WJC in 2017. Over 50 players playing in this event were either former 1st or 2nd round picks in recent NHL drafts including Marner taken #4 overall among the highest drafted and Canada had 18 former 1st round picks themselves.

I think this should be viewed as a missed opportunity by Marner to help solidify in Leafs management minds that he has nothing left to prove as a junior player or nothing left to learn at this level when viewed against top level competition.

The NHL is major step up this level of elite junior player so ideally Marner dominating this event would have gone a long way to confirm he should be trying to make NHL now and not returning to WJC tournament in December.

Timeline for Marner.

I would echo Shanahan's view on Leafs fans patience levels and call that a total cop out. Not only are we patient enough we've been dying for it.

Depends how one views him I guess, people are excited about him based on a lot of different factors including his play and expert opinions around the league. You clearly stated you expect him to settle in as a PP specialist in 2020. We disagree I guess, this will be a fun thread to look back on in 2020.

Marner wasn't auditioning.
More realistically this was a mid summer skate that will have zero bearing on whether he makes the Leafs or not.

I look at it like a vet in a nhl preseason game. He is a lock for the team (Canada) and is going to avoid injure so as not to miss the really important camp (leafs).
Priorities.

Im not sure how much Leaf fans patience or non patience will effect his development.

People can have expectations but I think that he himself, the staff n teammates will have a much greater impact on him developing.

And it seems most posters here, based on what Ive read, are ok with being patient.

Lou Lam, Babcock, Hunter, Dubas and others from Leafs management all showed up in person to take in this event evaluating Leafs prospects including Marner.

Seems like a lot of Leafs brain trust all traveling to Plymouth, Michigan during the summer taking in a 2 week mean nothing event. :help:

Marner was auditioning for Leafs management as all eyes were watching him.

PS. Every team in fact had management/scouts in attendance evaluating their own prospects against top level junior competition.

What else should they be doing with their time?
Were there no draft eligible players there? Players on other Teams that they may be interested in obtaining? If Marner wasn't there they wouldn't have attended?
They were there for two weeks?

Marner's 19 (shockingly even our prospects age) and most 18 year old are finished growing , sure they'll fill out but as far as height goes most are finished growing .

I really don't understand peoples argument to his small frame when he evidently makes up for that with his vision, smarts, speed, shiftiness, and scoring ability. We have witnessed many small forwards find success on their respective teams - why is this different?

It looks to me like Tampa handled him perfectly. BTW, I think he's a great analogue talent-wise.

Most 18-19 year olds have also started shaving.

If you look at some of nylander's instagram pictures, he can grow a bit of a beard to be honest.

That's a good point as Mitch doesn't need to grow any taller than he is.

So unless you think our 19 year old top prospect will never fill out, there is no debate. Well expect on HF.

I have a 40 year old brother in law who still barely needs to shave , i guess he's still going to grow as well .

19 year old Marner is pretty much the exact same size he was over a year ago at 18 when we drafted him so i wouldn't hold out much hope of him growing

So ridiculous to talk about 2 scrimmage games at a summer showcase like it means ANYTHING.

Some posters have wanted Marner to fail since day 1 - it'll make it all the sweeter when he's a force within a few years.

the discussion should never have been about whether he can grow or how much he will fill out , people should just accept he's always going to be light since he has a very slight frame

The discussion should be what impact can he have at his size . The key imo is if he can improve his first couple steps , he's far from slow but at his weight he needs to be much more explosive if he's going to become an elite offensive player at the NHL level and not just a pp specialist .

5'11" is plenty for today's NHL. Putting on some good weight would probably help him, but when he shows up to camp to play against men that should probably be telling whether or not he can play in the NHL at his current weight....which I think is still in the 165 range but does anyone know when the last time he was weighed by a reliable source was?

His height is fine, and has plenty of time to build up his core strength. This size discussion is a nonissue for me. 10 pounds isn't going to make or break any players career.
