Marner going to be overpaid badly. Now that his hot streak is over we see his real level of play. 18 points in the last 24 games. That’s around 60 for a full season which sounds about right for him.

Hmm, rangers have amassed plenty of picks over a couple year span...could maybe afford to lose 4 first rounders for a franchise forward?

Before this year he has been a 60 Point player. He had a bit of a hot streak thanks to Tavares but is now back to normal. Leafs fans are great at making you think their players are better than they actually are so you really have to look at them play to see who is actually good.

Thats for sure, no way the Leafs can afford 3 fowards over 10M no matter how you angle it...

They have been pretty clear they are going to pay our stars their money and try to fill in around them by hopefully drafting well and cheap FA signings.

Now, whether its going to work remains to be seen but that appears to be the plan.

Ya, 20 year old with 69 points in his second season playing 16 mins a night. Now has 71 points in 62 games but he's a 60 point player. You really know how to evaluate talent.

Rumor has it, that in games Marner doesnt get a point, he scores at a 0 point pace.

Great argument you have there. Easy to notice when people don’t actually watch players and just pull out their point totals from hockeydb. He will be back to 60 next year and you will be wondering wtf happened.

Id 100% be down with Marner having a mini slump for the remaining 20 games.
Its his own agents fault, the second he went public with his smarmy comments, he has been at like a .7ppg pace.
71 points in 62 games so he would get another 14 to finish the season if he plays at a .7ppg pace.
85 points in 82 games will be way easier to fit under our cap restraints than his current 95 point pace.

Might be the difference between 9.5*8 and 10.5x8

HockeyDB doesn't have TOI so there's that. You will see that Mitch played 16 mins the year prior and now plays around 20 mins. That's a 20% increase and reason to believe his 69 point season was more flukey than his current season. Plus Mitch is my boy, I've been watching him since he played in London. He's a line driver and often the best player on a stacked offensive team. Right now, ya, he's slumping but 18 points in 24 games, not too bad of a slump for a 22 year old looking to crack 90 this year.

No clue what you're watching.

Thats what they are plublicy saying to not make it a distraction, but I cant see it personally, it will be an interesting summer to follow to see what happens... Unless Marner is willing to lower his demands drastically, I think he is the one moved but I wouldnt be surprised if its Matthews either since he is the one with the biggest trade value and you could solve alot of issues by trading Matthews, Im pretty sure you can get a young top pairing defenseman, a very good second line center and some other useful cheap assets... The fact that Matthews made 0 concession on his last contract, both in salary and term, probably irritated the Leafs' direction alot, thats why its not illogical to trade Matthews over Marner in the situation you are...

They can and they will doesn't mean Marner will sign. What comparable did Mathews team use to get to 11.6? I and a lot of others believe Marner to be better player why would he settle for less? This is going to be tough deal to get done for sure and I don't envy the Leafs. However it's a nice problem to have I suppose when you have a team flush with talent.

probably something like this:

Active Players, Age 20-21 (must have played in both seasons)

Points Per Game

1.Crosby 1.35 (.82es, .52pp - 5:18pptoi)
2.McDavid 1.27 (.95es, .29pp - 3:00pptoi)
3.Ovechkin 1.21 (.65es, .55pp - 5:45pptoi)
4.Malkin 1.19 (.69es, .50pp - 5:23pptoi)
5.Stamkos 1.15 (.77es, .37pp - 4:10pptoi)
6.Matthews 1.10 (.84es, .27pp - 2:20pptoi)

Goals Per Game

1.Stamkos 0.64 (.46es, .18pp - 4:10pptoi)
2.Ovechkin 0.60 (.36es, .23pp - 5:45pptoi)
3.Matthews 0.58 (.43es, .15pp - 2:20pptoi)
4.Malkin 0.50 (.29es, .20pp - 5:23pptoi)
5.Crosby 0.44 (.34es, .10pp - 5:18pptoi)

or maybe this:

Last 2yrs (min 1000min):

ES p/60

1.Kucherov 3.19 (9.06pp)
2.Matthews 3.09 (6.91pp)
3.McDavid 3.07 (6.33pp)
4.Marchand 2.90 (6.80pp)
5.Gaudreau 2.79 (5.82pp)

ES P1/60

1.Matthews 2.62 (5.48pp)
2.Kucherov 2.43 (6.32pp)
3.McDavid 2.33 (4.88pp)
4.Gaudreau 2.17 (3.40pp)
5.MacKinnon 2.17 (5.39pp)

Marner's been better than Tavares this season. Also since when is 50 games "a bit of a hot streak"?

Yeah, the guy who's improved every year will suddenly regress because....reasons? Marner has actually looked better than Tavares on most nights. But yeah, he will regress to rookie-year levels for some reason. Sure.

I really do love how salty haters can be on this forum and how stupid team loyalty can make some people.

option a) marner signs sub 10.
have everyone

option b) marner offersheeted 10+.
leafs have 4 1sts, ~$10M Cap Space

see, now it would suck to lose mitch, butttttttt that is a lot of spendable assets.

At 10mil plus he’s all but a goner.
I mean, sure... but that does mean a team has to be willing to offer him $10 million+ and then give Toronto four first round picks as compensation. That is a lot to give up, even for a stud like Marner.

Again, unless someone is willing to give Marner a $10 million+ offersheet (and send Toronto four 1st round picks), the Leafs don't to do anything either. Wouldn't be surprised to see a Nylander-esque hold-out tbh.
