I know that it was only one game but did him playing better (or Ferraro playing worse I guess) make him the first call up if a bottom 6er goes down? With the AHL play this year and what they showed in the NHL I would think Callahan will get a shot before Ferraro.

Babcock also said he knows Callahan is a good PKer, so maybe with Ferraro doing poorly up here on the Kill Callahan might've jumped him in that role as well

Ferraro didn't play very well, but what exactly about Mitch was better aside from you liking him more? I guess less turnovers, but he isn't consistently better on the kill. On that same PK angle, the Wings got bombed on the PK last night as well. Now if Ferraro keeps throwing in one real egregious turnover a game he might lose the competition. I expect them to have a pretty open one, actually more likely given the history of the organization Mitch speaking out of turn has already put him close to drawing dead. But I hope they have an open competition, he has certainly earned that much.

I think camp is critical for both these guys or maybe one will be swapped out for something at the draft, if that is the case it is more likely the one that shot his mouth off on twitter though unfortunately for Callahan.

Jarnkrok wasn't even that good. #overrated

Okay, that might be something I just made up. I have no idea what he said, hopefully TZE fills us in.

It was something about Ferraro's call-up, indicating that it was nice to see that hard work pays off. Came off as a little tongue-in-cheek. He deleted it soon after posting it.

Social media is a nightmare for youth. Lord help me if I had a Facebook at 18.

Yup. Most (if not all at this point) professional sports teams counsel their players on social media, explaining the pitfalls and warning against falling into them. Still, it just takes one spike of emotions to make a mistake. I didn't think Callahan's tweet was too egregious, but it was ill-advised nonetheless.

I didnt think Mitch was strong enought for the type of game he plays. He would lean into a guy and they would shake him off. Or he would push a guy and they would hardly move. He played well, but needs to get much stronger to be an effective bottom 6er imo

This was the gist of it, also pretty crappy in terms of one of your teammates for three years is called up. Considering how close GR appears to be and they make it sound in all their twitter posts and interviews I didn't get it. I know Callahan has had a terrific season and I can be hard on him, but that was very unwise.

It was even more forceful than some of the Tatar blips. For those still wondering why Nyquist (who is more talented as many said) got better roles though immediately I think a part of it was his attitude. Nyquist would get called up and given more opportunity and a part of that is he is better, but I think a part of that is he handled demotions or promotions in a way that identified him as a core player to the Wings. He played the Red Wings game, now I am sure some of you hate that portion of the organization but they appear to be big on it.

If Callahan can keep this form through the summer and with another big workout year and his continued game development he might beat out Ferraro in a head to head. I think he will be a huge fan favorite if he can create that roster spot, I hope he can win over Babcock faster than he did Blashill, who deserves a ton of credit for what Callahan is today along with Mitch for all that hard work. Be nice to develop one of these guys into that hardworking grinder that can move up and down the lineup. If they stay down the lineup both are going to lose out to Glendening who while not popular with some around here wrapped up in his lack of offensive output is really a perfect checker that already has a knack for antagonizing star players. Callahan might be a pest but it is generally to other pseudo tough guys. What is impressive about Glendening's pest quality is the players responding to him are the Malkin, Toews, Kane and Neal types that are driven crazy and that is what made Maltby the ultimate pest. It is also about the players you get going nuts on you, engaging Shawn Thornton doesn't impress me nearly as much as getting Lucic angry and not caring something I think Glendening is actually able to do.

I know youre a Ferraro guy but Callahan played quite a bit better. He didnt make any bad turnovers in the defensive zone, fail to clear the zone when he had plenty of time with the puck and he didnt take any penalties. On top of that he generated a pretty good scoring chance for Andersson which was a pretty slick feed and showed willingness to stick up for teammates a bit. With Andersson and Helm amongst others back Callahan didnt play on the PK, but so far this season the only plausible reason for Ferraro to get a recall was to be a PK specialist and he bombed pretty hard on the PK. Callahan definitely looked better in his call up and is having quite the season in GR at this point. If he finishes the season like he has been going the last 10 games while Ferraro how he has been going, one will have a clear edge going into next season

As for the twitter thing. I've seen speculation that that was photoshopped over on RWC. Notice how the screen shot had no favourites or retweets? Given the amount of time, a tweet like that would have gained some attention. I know for one that I didnt see it. And whose to say the wings even saw it? I'm sure if that was relevant to them they wouldnt have sent Ferraro down to recall Callahan

Mitch is really a lot of fun to follow on twitter, not big on that, but I have to say he rarely disappoints in terms of that whenever I have flipped around to see what those guys are saying. I don't fault him being frustrated, but just think it is unwise. Ferraro might not be having a great offensive year, but that might not be what he was told to work on, he did lead the Griffins in regular season goals last year and all of his comments on being called up were to focus on depth role see his Miller comments. Mitch very well could have been directed we would like to see better offensive output out of you, they get directives. Just because we are disappointed with Ferraro's drop in numbers doesn't mean the Wings haven't noticed the other parts of his game and thought that is what we wanted.

It is hard to say, really the fact they seem to be heading for a heads up competition is probably good for both guys. It raises the stakes this summer and in camp, if you believe healthy competition is good and I do, that shapes up to make both guys better in the long run, though for one it appears to be trending as with another organization. I personally take Ferraro, I like his skating and I do really enjoy his pk work though it was rough the first go round, I think he will grow from this. Callahan has come a long way to enter this fight and it is a tribute to what kind of worker he is. This isn't an all is lost situation, I will certainly be smiling if California Love blasts when he scores goals or if Ferraro wins out and we have his speed and big hits from time to time along with his high glove shot. Both are quite a ways behind Glendening though, his signing with the organization hurt both these guys in my opinion.

For the record the best PK guy on the Griffins the last two years is Riley Sheahan, he was better at that than Glendening, Andersson, Ferraro, and Callahan. Really frustrating we aren't using him in that role, I know they are probably worried about the minutes he would log and I am happy he landed a PP gig, but this could become an issue for me like Smith never getting PP time. Not playing Riley on the pk is incredibly stupid.

Sheahan has been pushed into an offensive producing role... Im pretty happy at giving him a better chance at producing offensively than forcing him to tire himself out running around like an idiot on the PK.

Sheahan might be a little too slow for NHL PK's anyway. Glendenning has such speed and energy he is almost the perfect PK'er. My love for Glendenning is growing and he is playing his role pretty damn well. Sure he could get a goal or two once in a while but other than that, he is ideal for fourth line + PK duties.

My one and only interaction with Mitch was when I was working at the Resort they stay at during the summer for training camp.

I was working the midnight shift at the Front Desk and he wanted to rent a movie (It was him and Ferraro). He was in the condos and had to come to the front desk to put down his credit card on the room (can' take it over the phone for "security reasons"). No qualms no fights (like a lot of the guests I encountered) and he puts down his CC. Later on I wanted to see what movie he got. Him and Ferraro bought Toy Story 3.

Kid is as dumb as a brick (from my interactions with him), but as honest and humble as any of the guys I have met. I have tons of stories with these guys from my time at the Resort.

The funniest thing about the Callahan tweet is that he posted that after being hot for what, not even a full season?

Now look at Nyquist, who was a ppg player in GR for what, 3 consecutive seasons?

Think of the tweets Nyquist could have made over the years with total justification?

We are so lucky Nyquist has the patience of a saint, and is a well mannered guy.

So many other young guys would have asked for a trade or held a grudge.

Two seasons.

Also I don't think any player is justified to make disparaging comments about their employer.

Definitely not wise. That wasn't my point really though.

My point was if he made a tweet, he'd have a lot more justification in doing so than Callahan would, yet he still said nothing publically.

Just funny to me. Like hey Callahan, could be worse, you could have been Nyquist

During an intermission in his first game, Ferraro concluded a TV interview by saying 'hard work pays off'

Exactly. What he meant to say was talent/ideal conditions/hard work pays off. How bout the guy busting his ass just to get another minor league contract. If hard work payed off I'd be in the nfl right now.
