It may be that Fletcher tried, and when he couldn't get a commitment, moved on to Risto.
GM's have to juggle a lot of balls, sometimes you're looking at the music stopping and overpaying to make sure you have a chair.

Yep, maybe Fletch tried to do this other more reasonable thing that we have no information whatsoever he ever tried to do instead of the thing he actually did that he himself has admitted he's been wanting to do for years, so we shouldn't kill him for the thing he actually did, because he had no choice, and besides, he's not a surgeon and can be trusted.

Therefore, Thompson should see 11 mins of 5v5 action

MAF will play for Hawks it appears

Fleury/Lankinen should be very good duo

Thank God the Subban era appears over

One of Subban/Delia likely needs to be traded as Hawks already signed Soderblom who will be playing in AHL next year

Hopefully its Subban that goes away

Just perused hockeyDB for fun. Carolina has drafted THIRTY-THREE players in the past 3 drafts. Why don’t more teams do this?

It’s the smart play. Hoard too many assets, develop players, and trade a few for NHL roster players when needed. Fletcher will never do this because he’s a desperate, panicky, & messy bitch.

It's the one thing that I think the team is doing perfectly, honestly. The best way to get a good player is (usually) to get a top 5ish pick.

After that, it's a numbers game. You're basically throwing darts blindfolded, so more darts is the way to go.

This is basically what Hextall did. But the main issue is what have they won since doing it? They haven't made a finals since 2005.

It’s a process that doesn’t just end in drafting. They also needs corresponding moves as well to make the team stronger. They have tried and they haven’t worked out. I’m a fan of how they have tried to cultivate a winner in Carolina. It’s not a perfect science.

Carolina is pretty active in the trade market every year. They actually find unearthed value in players around the league as well which helps. So I wouldn’t really compare them to what Hextall did here.

Obviously they’re a small market team so money’s going to always be an issue.

They gave up Adam Fox and Jeff Skinner though. So let's not crown them perfect franchise just yet.
Although that Dahling and Rask trade is a great clowning to watch as a fan of hockey.
