I do wish they would 'close' that loophole in the CBA. We've been there, it's painful as a fan to watch your team draft a kid and then get spurned when the fanbase has watched the kid mature.

it's just better for the league to close that loophole. Hey, if the kid wants to 'ask' for a trade, so be it, but at least the organization is getting something in return. (outside of 1st round picks in which you get a compensatory pick in the 2nd round commiserate with your loss)
Happened to us the most. Wheeler, Faranucci, Turris blackmailed us to burn the year or he was going to chl and re-entering draft.

I just dont see it as a loophole. It is operating as intended. Young player gets drafted, he can sign an elc with the team that drafted him or he can wait and sign with whomever. No human should be obligated to work for someone, if they do not do so of their own freewill and the player has not committed to a team until he has signed a contract with them.

Further, it is incentive for the drafting team to work effectively with the player and make wise management decisions. If it looks like it is not going to work out with the player, the team still has a (typically) tradeable asset. In this case, Minny took a 63oa and turned it into a 47oa so, at least by one measurement, they benefitted and the player benefitted by getting to the NHL sooner.
Why is this player entitlement only given to those in the NCAA? If it's a good thing then why not give all draftees that entitlement?

Junior draftees can choose not to sign - fundamentally the same if not quite exactly the same.

Edit: as noted below that opportunity is two years after being drafted - the player may be re-drafted or may become a free agent if not drafted.

I'm about as much a free marketeer as you can find. Competition between NHL teams for signing new players is not a free market nor should it be. The free market is the guy can go play for the KHL or SEL or Extraliga or whatever the hell else.

At an absolute minimum teams should be compensated the pick they lost (at the same draft slot) by a player jumping ship.

The league is the overarching organization and the one with ultimate authority not the teams. The league very obviously has an interest in talent being at least somewhat evenly distributed for the health of all teams.

All players draft rights do expire except players drafted out of Russia since there is no transfer agreement between the NHL and Russian Hockey Federation.

NCAA players actually have their draft rights held slightly longer than most. A typical player drafted out of Europe the same year would have their rights expire in June while NCAA players expire mid-August
