Thoughts and prayers with Mikheyev. Such an unfortunate injury. Hope he can recover in time for playoffs. Either way, hope that's not the last we see of him in a Leafs jersey. Hoping we can get him on a 2-4 year extension at a reasonable dollar. They should definitely gamble on his small resume imo

I wouldn't go more than 2 years tbh. We have a lot if wingers in the system fighting for a spot, Robertson will likely be here by then if all goes well. No need to go long term on a guy that's played just 39 NHL games and will likely always be a middle of the lineup guy.

Less of a resume than either of Johnsson or Kapanen as well.

Was hoping it wasnt that bad.

Thats 3/4 of our LW out at the moment.

Engvall should be here to stay, and I would love to see Brooks/Marchmant/Korshkov all get a cup of coffee during this injury stint.

Please, please dont play Petan.

Would much rather see a marlie we developed get a shot with the big club. We saw how it worked out with Holl, Moore, and Engvall. They all came up and stuck as full-timers.

As far as Mikheyev, I wouldnt be against letting him recover for the year regardless of how far we go. Unless he makes a miraculous recovery it would be better for him to come back next season 100% then slide into late season/playoffs and have to get back into shape.

And for everyone talking about his next contract, that shouldnt be a concern right now. He is ok which is what matters.

Imagine you get seriously injured at your job and all everyone is talking about is "well at least we dont have to pay him as much".

Maybe this will lead to someone coming up or thinking of an extra plastic guard that could somehow cover a bit more wrist/forearm, like the plastic hanging down off the goalie mask; I don't have any idea exactly, just throwin out an idea. I only ever played goal all my life. I just know a lot of the gloves ARE really short and there must be a ton of wrist/arm between elbow pad and glove.
Obvious it's an area that some players are going to prefer to somehow have maximum flexibility and seem willing to sacrifice some risk for it, but, if the piece was loose enough and light enough, maybe players would go for it. Didn't Marner get seriously whacked in the same area last game. Again, only played goal, but, is this an area where players get bruised and just suffer with injury for large parts of a season but just play through it.

He's outplayed Johnsson and Kapanen though imo in that shorter resume. And he's new to the North American game entirely. He's gotten comfortable quite quickly. He was on pace for a bigger year than both those players and he gets 0 time on the Powerplay. Mikheyev is a keeper, imo

Don't get me wrong I love the guy, but these are the types of guys we have to replace when they get too expensive if we want to be able to afford a defense /goaltender moving forward.

Kappy, Johnsson, Kerfoot too. The next 2 years we can pay these guys but then we'll need some money for Rielly, hopefully Sandin and Liljegren extensions, as well as a new goaltender depending on Freddie's asking price.

I'm no doctor but while the artery cut is much scarier and urgent to fix immediately, I feel like the tendon is the longer recovery time, but arteries cut is so rare I've never heard recovery times from that.

Hope he recovered well. Never want to mess with that kind of thing. Hockey is secondary.

Kind of bad to talk about under the circumstance but this probably gets him cheaper which is key next year.

Ilya Mikheyev had an artery and tendons severed in his right wrist by the skate cut

Jesus.

wrist.arteries.tendons.hockey.cut.jpg

Scenario #1) If the injury was closer to his thumb ... it would be a radial artery and palmaris longus tendon injury.

Scenario #2) If the injury was closer to his fifth finger, it would be a ulnar artery and flexor digitorum superficialis tendon injury.

#3 would be be ulnar artery and the most medial tendon ... flexor carpi ulnaris tendon.

Oh man really enjoyed watching him grow each game. On the bright side it means resigning can’t possibly cost too much so we will see him again next season.

also perhaps a reprieve for johnsson because I though as soon as he was ready to return he’d be traded for sure

Best of luck on his recovery.

I think it will take some time before he's back to 100%, not expecting anything until next season.

He will be missed, as he is so versatile.

On the business side, a reasonable multi-year contract.
Something like this shows how quickly it could end, so a guaranteed multi-year might deal could make everyone happy and secure.

For sure. With our plethora of wingers it's going to turn into a game of "who wants to be a maple leaf". The players are going to dictate who stays and who goes based on who's willing to take the bigger bargain
