Town NHL hates !
@topshelf15 look, its simple...

30 NHL team owners in one corner and Melnyk in another.

Ottawa group makes an offer of $500M (USD) to Melnyk to buy and keep the Senators in Ottawa (be it in Kanata or downtown doesn't matter).
Out of town group makes an offer of $650M (USD) to Melnyk to buy and move the Senators out of Ottawa region.

What do you honestly think the 30 other guys will vote for ?
30 franchises losing value (because franchise values are speculative anyway) and keeping a franchise in Ottawa OR moving but increasing everyone's speculative value

No its not that simple .Ottawa doesnt lose money in fact it makes money.....It has currently a huge multibillion dollar arena in the process of being built ,all of which makes the league money....The expansion fee will still be there for them should they choose to expand again,them moving a money making team for short term gain when there are plenty of much more troubled economic teams out there makes absolutely no sense......

It does if nobody is willing to buy the team. There is nothing the league can or will do if the only realistic buyer is out of market and wants to relocate.

The nhl has some powers but not infinite powers over clubs like you think they do. The nhl can't just remove an owner and they can't force an owner to sell the team because the fans do not like them.

There are potential owners willing to buy the team though,thats the entire point you are missing....

Who's paying for it ? Let me help you. Eugene Melnyk, the guy who refuses to pay for free agents to make his team more competitive. The guy that's about to trade your best player to Vegas or somewhere else.
