Worth noting that Lemieux had 2 goals in the final game of the season to finish at 199, including the OT winner.
Dang. He really tried.

Crazy all the bickering.

We are seeing some of the best offensive hockey since the late 80's/early 90's

Can we just enjoy it? Yes?
Can’t help those with McDavid Derangement Syndrome.

I can admit when I'm wrong:
If I had to make a bet today, I'd say no. McDavid has gotten an unusually large number of secondary assists this season. It's unlikely this will persist.

During the 2023-24 season, McDavid has averaged 0.73 primary assists per game. This is exactly equal to what he achieved last year. He's averaged 0.75 primary assists per game over the past three seasons (2021 to 2023), and 0.71 over the past five seasons (2019 to 2023). All of this suggests that McDavid's primary assist production is sustainable.

It's a different story for secondary assists:

SeasonA2/gp
2017
0.32
2018
0.34
2019
0.23
2020
0.39
2021
0.39
2022
0.38
2023
0.35
2024
0.49

The number really jumps out. McDavid is averaging 38% more secondary assists per game than last year. And this is far above his career average. In fact, McDavid has been remarkably consistent (been 0.32 and 0.39 A2/gp in six of the past seven seasons).

If McDavid reverts back to a sustainable/expected level of secondary assists, he'll end the year with an assist total in the low to mid 90's. I sincerely hope that McDavid proves me wrong, as it would great to see someone reach 100, but the underlying numbers appear to be unsustainable.
Very impressive that McDavid just achieved something that, up until now, has only been done by three of the four greatest players in history.

Mcdavid has 100 assists. And are winning 9-1. And mcdavid is coming off an injury. Im not a coach but theyd be glued to the bench in the third for me.
He played 15 mins after sitting for 3 games...you dont want your players cold going into the playoffs. His ice time was managed.
They clearly kept him out until he was ready otherwise they would have played him against the Canucks to get the division.

Glad he made it back so he could do it. Would have felt like a let down if he was stuck at 99. Also glad he waited to do it against SJ instead of Van.

Joe played all 82 games that year and got 92 assists. He also did a lot of damage on the power play in the year with the most PPs/game ever. Which is why his 2nd highest season assist total was 72.

Joe Thornton is no slouch. He’s 14th all time in scoring and 7th all time in assists.
Actually just to improve the point, Thornton had back to back 90 assist seasons. Websites split the first one up because of the trade from boston to San Jose. I believe it's a record for most assists/points in a season a player was traded in.

2005 = 96 assists
2006 = 92 assists
